When you think about it, the death of Liu Kang and the heel turn by Raiden had to be done.

Basically every game no matter what had the same ending. Liu Kang beats the evil doing boss and Raiden saves Earthrealm.....so it was time for something new.

Now with Raiden off killing people or himself and Liu Kang a zombie, other characters can step up and be the protagonist.

Deception happens right after the defeat of the Light forces(Jax, Sonya, Kung Lao, Johnny Cage...) by the Deadly Alliance itself. Liu Kang was killed by Shang Tsung with the coward help of Quan Chi there at the intro of Deadly Alliance(game). Amongst the good guys, only Raiden and Bo Rai Cho arrive to the end. Raiden kills himself in Deception's intro to try to stop Onaga, along with Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. Bo Rai Cho Freed Li Mei from being consumed by the liar sourcerer Shang Tsung...

When Raiden sacrificed himself to try and destroy Onaga he killed the Deadly Alliance... as a result of this Liu Kang's soul which had been consumed by Tsung returnd to Liu Kang's deteriorated body in the netherrealm, but he was still having an internal battle between body and soul which had been resolved in Ermac and Liu Kang's Ending in MK6... This one in 'Armageddon' does not actually happen in the canon-plot of MK

You are wrong. If a character appears in the freakin' opening video of a game, they are canon to the storyline. Raiden DID resurrect Liu Kang's body, and sent it on a rampage killing many people. the game is called armageddon for a reason. Of course people are going to die. You just have to accept that. but at least most of the people who died are unpopular or newer characters. a lot of classic characters survive. the point is to kill off many characters to leave room for more in newer games, so I'm fine with it. But you'll be comforted knowing they won't kill off Scorpion, sub-zero, and so on.
