Sorry... i know I'm in the minority here -but even "Lost In Translation" was rubbish. Sorry - but it was. Self-indulgent, pretentious, "will they? wont they?" nonsense. Sorry, there you have it. Didn't care about either of the central characters. Didn't care what happened to them. Didn't care if they ever did or not. Didn't care what she whispered to him at the end. DID care that I'd just spent 2 hours of my life being FUCKING bored!!!!!!!
Lost in Translation is great all the way through. Come on Mark, you don't have to try and be cool all the time. Though I'm sure this film is annoying, it sounds like it.
Sofia Coppola- one of the most overrated filmmakers of our time - her films are completely narcissistic, with this being the worst offender. Yes it must be hard being the fantastically rich, isolated daughter of a famous filmmaker who never had the time to be a 'proper' father, but it's time to drop that theme, I think.
Thank you for rightly panning this movie. I watched it after the positive reviews, and it was just...so...dull. Apparently watching the goings on of an action star on hiatus is about as interesting as watching any other unemployed person. Then he gets his daughter, and suddenly...well, he's like any dad hanging out with his kid, if any dad went to awards shows and was surrounded by his conquests. Sappy redeeming ending slapped on way too late, with way too little redeeming buildup.

@mermaydlondon So you think having a PhD in film really matters? It seems to me most renowned directors aren't even film school graduates. He doesn't even have a PhD in film, he has a PhD in English where he wrote a thesis on Horror Fiction. I'm sorry he Isn't funny, his humour is wet! But i guess thats because he's a pommie..have a nice rainy day mate.
@louisenglish To be honest PhD in English is impressive and I don't really see how it can makes an difference. I'm studying History at uni want I am interested in becoming a film reviewer. History and English is very analytical and so is reviewing a film..
@louisenglish louisenglish, it was you who brought up the argument about education. somebody proved you wrong by writing that mark kermode is actually educated and now you write that it is not important. make up your mind!
@mermaydlondon The person to the left of Simon definately looks like a woman to me. She is only on a for a brief moment. She has a little smile to herself during this fleeting moment. Pause at 3.56.
I normally agree with Mark but I really liked this film. Really, really liked it. The whole point of the film was that wealth on its own does not make you happy. The film is slow (like all Sofia Coppola's films) — but it does this to engage the audience in the protagonist's boredom.
Obviously a lot of people are not going to like this because it breaks the rules of conventional cinematic narrative, but this film is highly recommended by me.
@jamiewindsor bloody loads of films are slow and about boredom, its pretty conventional, and most are pretty up themselves cause making the movie slow is a really easy way to make a film seem more intelligent than it is while putting in no effort, SC has got this down to a t
i think the point is not that its just boring its boring because just why the hell should we care for someone we have no real way of identifying with?
Damnit - they edited out the best bit of that whole review, which for me was when they tune out his microphone but you can still hear him going "tralalalala"
"Lost In Translation" is one of the best, most engaging, and romantic films ever made. It's all about mood, tone, and atmosphere. And I thought the Karaoke scene was brilliantly done.
With that being said, Sofia Coppola is an inconsistent good filmmaker.
I got the impression that the dull portrayal of chateau marmont was to express how shallow and insignificent it can make you, money makes you unhappy and all that. He didn't really get on with his daughter, hence the awkward boredom.
It'd be a helluvalot more interesting if Johansson blew up a little bit every few minutes or so.
No seriously. It was just shite. I can very much enjoy a slower movie, but this one here was just two filthy rich people sitting around moaning about how bored they were in the most exciting place in the world. Do not enjoy. Did you like it?
It really does! I feel the same sympathy as I do towards the little piggies on "My Super Sweet 16". They sure do have problems, and I'm sure they really are fecking miserable, but a normal person should be happy as a piggy in shit (which in a way, they are). They're miserable and bored, but really...? Poor little rich twats...
@HisLordDudeness So an 11-year-old kid shouldn't get upset when abandoned by a parent as long as they're wealthy? I think that was kind of the point of the film.
Hey, y'know, Mark, let it go, man. It's cool, man, like, let's play Nintendo, and a song, man, and stuff, just chill out, man. Y'know, we're people, man, by the pool, y'know, like, man...
@Nopperabou can't judge since I don't know Mark and from what I've heard of Somewhere on other sites it is exactly what he's describing, so i see no need for being jealous to criticise the movie
Oh, so it's like GREENBERG? I don't remember such bad editing and pacing in LOST IN TRANSLATION. I cared about Murray and Johannson's relationship, and the mystery of what he whispers to her at the end. I liked the idea of a washed-up star being in Japan, had good comedy moments.
these type of movies are good for people who can't sleep........they will knock you right out
