  • these type of movies are good for people who can't sleep........they will knock you right out

  • Sorry... i know I'm in the minority here -but even "Lost In Translation" was rubbish. Sorry - but it was. Self-indulgent, pretentious, "will they? wont they?" nonsense. Sorry, there you have it. Didn't care about either of the central characters. Didn't care what happened to them. Didn't care if they ever did or not. Didn't care what she whispered to him at the end. DID care that I'd just spent 2 hours of my life being FUCKING bored!!!!!!!

  • @84PhillyB yeah i fell asleep during lost in translation, i tried to watch it again, and I fell asleep again........seriously it happened twice lol

  • Lost in Translation is great all the way through. Come on Mark, you don't have to try and be cool all the time. Though I'm sure this film is annoying, it sounds like it.

  • @simonh505 whats great about lost in translation?

  • Sofia Coppola- one of the most overrated filmmakers of our time - her films are completely narcissistic, with this being the worst offender. Yes it must be hard being the fantastically rich, isolated daughter of a famous filmmaker who never had the time to be a 'proper' father, but it's time to drop that theme, I think.

  • I'll have what Mark's having.

  • "In this business we call 'show'" LOL!

  • SOFIRE

  • loved this review! the ending made me laugh

  • Thank you for rightly panning this movie. I watched it after the positive reviews, and it was just...so...dull. Apparently watching the goings on of an action star on hiatus is about as interesting as watching any other unemployed person. Then he gets his daughter, and suddenly...well, he's like any dad hanging out with his kid, if any dad went to awards shows and was surrounded by his conquests. Sappy redeeming ending slapped on way too late, with way too little redeeming buildup.

  • the review is more exciting than the movie!

  • @Redem10 exactly!!!!i love this gay!!!he said everything i thought....sOFIA!!!!

  • @mermaydlondon So you think having a PhD in film really matters? It seems to me most renowned directors aren't even film school graduates. He doesn't even have a PhD in film, he has a PhD in English where he wrote a thesis on Horror Fiction. I'm sorry he Isn't funny, his humour is wet! But i guess thats because he's a pommie..have a nice rainy day mate.

    Regards,

    Louis not Louise

  • @louisenglish To be honest PhD in English is impressive and I don't really see how it can makes an difference. I'm studying History at uni want I am interested in becoming a film reviewer. History and English is very analytical and so is reviewing a film..

  • @louisenglish louisenglish, it was you who brought up the argument about education. somebody proved you wrong by writing that mark kermode is actually educated and now you write that it is not important. make up your mind!

  • @mermaydlondon The person to the left of Simon definately looks like a woman to me. She is only on a for a brief moment. She has a little smile to herself during this fleeting moment. Pause at 3.56.

  • This is one of my favorite films of the year. It's hypnotic in its pacing.

  • 1. this guy thinks he's funny and he really isn't

    2. he has no clue what this film portrays

    3. he is uneducated, has the worst vocabulary and can't put a sentence together

  • I normally agree with Mark but I really liked this film. Really, really liked it. The whole point of the film was that wealth on its own does not make you happy. The film is slow (like all Sofia Coppola's films) — but it does this to engage the audience in the protagonist's boredom.

Obviously a lot of people are not going to like this because it breaks the rules of conventional cinematic narrative, but this film is highly recommended by me.

  • @jamiewindsor bloody loads of films are slow and about boredom, its pretty conventional, and most are pretty up themselves cause making the movie slow is a really easy way to make a film seem more intelligent than it is while putting in no effort, SC has got this down to a t

i think the point is not that its just boring its boring because just why the hell should we care for someone we have no real way of identifying with?

  • Sofia is Francis Ford Coppola's daughter, you know. It must be terrible for her.

  • Damnit - they edited out the best bit of that whole review, which for me was when they tune out his microphone but you can still hear him going "tralalalala"

  • "Hey I got a car."

    hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • "Lost In Translation" is one of the best, most engaging, and romantic films ever made. It's all about mood, tone, and atmosphere. And I thought the Karaoke scene was brilliantly done.

With that being said, Sofia Coppola is an inconsistent good filmmaker.

  • SOPHIA!!!

  • hahaha first time ive found mark funny, "hey...we're americans....by the pool"

  • Loved this review. Had me laughing out loud :-)

  • Poor Mark is so confuzzled he gets stuck in a loop :D

  • bourgeois spoiled little rich girl trying to make movies

  • Ahaha! He hasn't gotten this worked up since Eat, Pray, Love!

  • I got the impression that the dull portrayal of chateau marmont was to express how shallow and insignificent it can make you, money makes you unhappy and all that. He didn't really get on with his daughter, hence the awkward boredom.

  • SoFIAH!

  • The Third best rant of the year after Sex and the City 2 and Eat, Prey, Love

  • @jd899 The Backup Plan was good if that film was this year. Cant remember it was such a hit :-)

  • awsome review

  • Lost on translation was the most satisfying and best film of the 00's so I am looking forward to this

  • @13evilpriest13

    Lost in translation was shite.

  • @Lilja124 Not enough explosions for you?

  • @13evilpriest13

It'd be a helluvalot more interesting if Johansson blew up a little bit every few minutes or so.

No seriously. It was just shite. I can very much enjoy a slower movie, but this one here was just two filthy rich people sitting around moaning about how bored they were in the most exciting place in the world. Do not enjoy. Did you like it?

  • @Lilja124

Doesn't it remind you of those little twats on The OC or 90210 with 'ALL those PROBLEMS'! Uggghhhhh...

  • @HisLordDudeness

It really does! I feel the same sympathy as I do towards the little piggies on "My Super Sweet 16". They sure do have problems, and I'm sure they really are fecking miserable, but a normal person should be happy as a piggy in shit (which in a way, they are). They're miserable and bored, but really...? Poor little rich twats...

  • @HisLordDudeness So an 11-year-old kid shouldn't get upset when abandoned by a parent as long as they're wealthy? I think that was kind of the point of the film.

  • @13evilpriest13 That's a very bold statement. I'm going to make one as well. Pan's Labyrinth was the best film of the decade.

  • Finally a classic rant!

  • LEGENDARY

  • Also, best review ever :P

  • He actually talked normal, but the woman talked crazy fast, so he seemed slow :P

  • I love the fact that Mayo have heard the "..and then it stops"-line so many times he can finish the sentence himself.

  • I'm a big Sofia Coppola film and I was sad to say I was really let down by Somewhere.

  • "THEN THEY COME BACK!!!"

  • Hey, y'know, Mark, let it go, man. It's cool, man, like, let's play Nintendo, and a song, man, and stuff, just chill out, man. Y'know, we're people, man, by the pool, y'know, like, man...

  • mayo's mike is massive. i feel im missing maximum kermode.

  • Lost in Translation was one of the most overrated films of the past decade...

    I think I'll give this a miss.

  • Fantastic rant XD If this isn't included on their best-of podcast at the end of the year I'll eat my shoe in the manner of Werner Herzog

  • 5:00 SOFIA!!!

  • I just like the lady in the backround who has a smile on her face when Simon asks how long does a pole dance take? Just before 4 Minutes in :).

  • Aha! It's good to see 'chair S4' has returned. Still not figured out what it means.

  • Man, sounds like this director ought-a try making something that passes the Bechdel Test.

  • Classic Kermode.

  • always the controversial (perhaps)

  • Is he drunk?

  • Priceless review.

  • He's not washed up he's successful. It's supposed to be boring! It's like real life. Even the life of a movie star is shit and boring.

  • @Nopperabou nice, but i still don'T want to spend a movie on "it's boring"

    thanks mark for the warning

  • @AntonGorodetsky Mark's just jealous because he's on the periphery of that world but can never get inside it.

  • @Nopperabou can't judge since I don't know Mark and from what I've heard of Somewhere on other sites it is exactly what he's describing, so i see no need for being jealous to criticise the movie

  • @Nopperabou

On the brink of banality, huh.

  • i like the rare occasions where mark gets pissed drunk!

  • Oh, so it's like GREENBERG? I don't remember such bad editing and pacing in LOST IN TRANSLATION. I cared about Murray and Johannson's relationship, and the mystery of what he whispers to her at the end. I liked the idea of a washed-up star being in Japan, had good comedy moments.

    Pretty disappointing.
