I've had ferrets my whole life. The ferret here is biting at his fingers because he wants to get down and play. Seriously, anyone saying that scruffing a ferret harms them obviously has no idea what they're talking about. Mothers scruff them to calm them and move them, and believe me, mating between ferrets is a lot more aggressive than this. My ferret goes totally limp when I scruff her, but she usually starts licking my face shortly after. It makes grooming and handling a lot easier.
Why does this video have so many dislikes? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE! If you think this is a bad way to control your ferret then you don't deserve to have ferrets. This is exactly what you do when scruffing.
You definately have to scruff them when you trim their nails. They go into a passive stance when you it. At least 4 out of 6 of mine do. I have two that give you a hard time.
here's to all the people saying this hurts the ferret. its just like a cat, you can do this to them and IT DOESNT HURT THEM! it doesnt hurt them cuz this scruff is there so their moms can pick them up and move them. that skin is like a shirt pretty much. so stop saying it hurts them! get a ferret and you'll understand!
@zupertubbe when you hold a ferret by its scruff it calms them and makes them sleepy, a scruff is lose skin, and when you pick it up by its scruff it doesnt hurt them, if it did then it would try to bite and get away.
@CheetoPasta Oh okay, I was not aware of that, I myself have a ferret and i apologise for the rude language. If someone is misbehaving with animals my temper - as you can see - is VERY short. :o)
if you never scruff your ferret... then good luck with him or her being a biter. i scruff mine and say NO and it usually works. if it doesn't, they get a time out :o)
Impressive that you're working with your ferret, even though he bites and doing a good job I might add. Lots of attention and the biting will stop. There's also this spray you can buy called "bitter apple". I think the name says it all. Well good luck :)
Oh! And secondly to all those saying you cannot scruff a ferret. That's not true. Try clipping their nails without it. Not an easy task. It's perfectly normal. Mother ferrets do it to their babies... same with cats and all sorts of animals. The ferret wouldn't yawn if it hurt, it would flail and make screaming noises or it might even release it's scent glands.
@lemonbeth120 Omigosh you do nail trimming the hard way? Just put ferretone/ salmon oil/ olive oil on their tummies and clip their nails when they are busy licking it up. My ferret Rolo is just as spazzy as the one in this vid and doesn't like being held unless he is tired, (not not bitey at all tho) but he completely ignores me when i clip his nails because he is so busy with the oil.
@katoudupuis You have nothing to worrie about its perfectly normal for a ferrert to be as small as 1/2 a pound to 4 pounds even if its full grown or still growing.1 of my ferrets is 1 pound and is a 2 year old female and one of the others is a 2 1/2 pound 6 month old male ferret. and they are both as healthy as can be. its very natraul for a male ferret to be much bigger in size lenght and weight then a female ferret. just makr sure they are eating and drinking if not then get them cheked out :)
Fucked kids shouldnt have animalas... its only my opinion. Showing how veterinaty catches ferret without bite to do this movie is officialy like "hey ! you are piece of shit"
@codysimspsonrox that's not mean at all. In fact, it's sometimes necessary, especially when you have a ferret who doesn't like to have nails clipped or ears cleaned. That being said, the boy in this video was not properly demonstrating how to scruff a ferret. As @hypernova20 said, you're only supposed to grab a small part of loose skin around their neck, and you know you're doing it properly if they yawn.
ur not suppose to grab part of there back when ur scruffing them, thats not good. ur only supose to scruff part of the neck...but do it and be very gentle. and dont do it becuase you can. only do it when u have to and dont carry them while scruffing. all they wieght is not supported by the scruff..maybe in the wild when a mom weasel scruffs its babies but a humans hand is more strong and u should only apply little pinch. I never have to scruff my ferrets, only when they get a shot at the vet
@YuiMewMew Well, then apparently you don't know anything about that little patch of skin back there. Pinch the skin on your elbow. Does it hurt? Pull on it. Does it hurt? It shouldn't.
@hshahrhah I'm sure I'm older than you "kiddo". Secondly, no it does not clog their air passages. It's how the mother (including cats) carries her kits around with her and puts them to sleep. If it clogged their air passages, they wouldn't even have the ability to take in the huge gulp of air required to yawn. Don't believe me? Choke yourself and try to yawn.
You are wrong and mistaken. This isnt even remotely close to being abuse. Whats great to give a ferret to completely relax them and to get them to chill is Ferretone. its a supplement to, they love it and it makes there fur soft. and you can cut there nails/groom them while there occupied. PLUS it smells like chocolate. ^_^ comes highly reccomended.
I have to use that technique to give my ferret his ulcer meds. it pays to learn how ferrets treat their young so you can be a good parent to your own.
I really appreciated having ferrets when living in Oregon because they did a great job keeping the rodent population in check. Now that I live in the Central Valley of California there are no ferrets and the damn mice and rats are a real problem.
mines never bit me, i never picked it up like that either, i just used gloves for a while, then i went ahead and took of the gloves, got a bite i growled she let go, now she playfuly bites only, pick em up twice a day and there trained withing 2 weeks =)

I've had a few stubborn fuzzies who wouldn't respond to any training, but me biting them, so for a while, I looked like an idiot, biting my fuzzy - kind of scruffing him. It worked wonders. @katoudupuis It may be that your Ferrets are female (Jills), they are usually alot smaller than males (Hobbs). In which case theres nothing to worry about. Alot of ferrets on youtube are young ones who havent yet lost their 'puppy fat'. Older ferrets will often be smaller due to the loss of this weight. One of mine has now shrunk to a more reasonable size after loss of his 'puppy fat' though he's still a big fella. Hope this helps.
@jeeeesssiie but then again, I have 3 boys as well, 2 one year olds - one is huge, one is tiny and a baby ferret who's almost bigger than the smaller 1 year old. It depends on the ferret :)
@katoudupuis no worrie, we got a 5 year old ferret named freddy, he is like 900 gram, and the other two named pablo and diego are twice as heavy as he, and guess what :D freddy still shows them whos the boss
@katoudupuis I have three ferrets now and had four previously and they were all different sizes. I have two large ferrets (long and thick) and one who is much smaller but just as healthy and active. As long as your ferrets aren't underweight, lethargic or listless they are probably just naturally smaller.
@katoudupuis Are they females? Girls are naturally a LOT smaller than males. Also if your ferrets were mill ferrets, the early neutering stunts their growth.
@McSpaz626 Scruffing when training a ferret to nip train usually takes a lot longer. I have trained over 10 ferrets of my own not to bite. Some work with just scruffing, some you have to scruff and drag along the floor, there were some that I would literally bite back. It depends on the ferret. Just scruffing doesn't usually work with many ferrets.
That is the proper method everyone, so stop disliking this video. In fact, scruffing a ferret is a good way to train them not to bite, and it calms them down when they get overly excited.
@McSpaz626 Whoa easy pal, no need to be such a, sorry if a sound like an ass, a douche to EFDragon, it would be a good idea if you did post a video on catching a loose ferret, if you took his comment as in insults, thats probably a misunderstanding, if you take my comment as an insult, then i'm sorry :l
poor thing i know thats how you realy hold a ferret but it looks like ow your hurting me ow ow i know it realy doesnt hurt them but it looks like it i found! my ferret! and when its realy sunny like it was yesturday and today i let my ferret go in my garden! but i could still see him!
Ferrets like it when they're held like that, my best friend was scared when i first picked up her ferret like that. She was like "OMG! YOUR KILLING IT!" "Nooo!! They like it like this! It's alright silly!" Her step brother still doesn't understand though that it's alright to pick them up like that. It calms them down, my second ferret when we first had him, he was 9 weeks old and a nipper, but he was absolutly adorable, we always had to pick him up like that cause he nipped. RIP Bandito..
he's doing it right. The ferret's not struggling. He's just hyper. They usually do that when first let out of their cages because their excited. Don't hate, just learn.
Wow you guys are stupid hes doing it right. You do have to scruff your Ferret especially if their older males because they bite like a mother fucker. And this doesn't hurt them its what the mother would do.
@revolutioncomming how about u get a fucking life aye? i no how to handle one cunt coz ive had a few of them so fuck off! unicornlizzie knows wat happens aye, so learn a bit about it then tell me if im torturing it ok cunt gutz?
@revolutioncomming No you're stupid. Do you know anything about ferrets?! Clearly from your response to the video, no. No you don't know anything about ferrets. Scruffing a ferret does not hurt the animal. Ferrets scruff each other in play. Vet's exam ferrets by scruffing them as well. They have extremely thick and loose skin on the back of their neck. In fact, it calms them. Like the video showed, it makes them yawn. Please Educate yourself.
Let it down, don't you understand it's struggling because it doesn't like when you grasp it? It's not a toy, and if you can't live with an animal without thinking it needs to be controlled and obey you then don't get one.
i dnt do it at all becuz i can tell he struggles, i was only explaining how to controll a ferret if they bite alot, so yer im pretty sure i no tht its not a fking toy so get a life u stupid fuck! get ya facts straight b4 u say them ok?!?!
It's struggling because it's a FERRET. They don't like to sit still for long or be held for long. It's not struggling because it's in pain or it doesn't like it! Do you even own a ferret? A ferret owner would know that IT IS OKAY TO SCRUFF IT!
@unicornlizzie No I don't _own_ any animals. I would never force anything upon an animal such as restraining it, locking it inside a cage, forcing it to do tricks or do/be as I want it to, or worse to _punish_ it for not obeying. I understand this is the view you have of animals and how they should be treated, and this is the big difference between me and people like you. I'm an animal lover, you're someone who wants to control animals. We can agree to disagree and leave it at that.
@RJLeffmann You got to remember the environment animals all come from. If I held a dog on it's side on the ground not letting it move, but knowing it was psychically perfectly fine. It would be teaching it a mental lesson, and that would be that I'm the boss, and what I say goes. Animals want that, it stabilizes them so they know whats up. Which is exactly what dog do in the wild which there packs, they show signs of dominance.
@RJLeffmann So.. if you had a pet, that was always biting, breaking your furniture and such, wouldn't you like it to stop? I mean I don't agree with hitting it or abusing it until it stops, but at least each it with treats or so that what it does is wrong o.o. I see that you haven't had a ferret, or a pet. Try owning one. Since you this so called animal lover.
@KiraRulrr09 Do you see the irony in what you write? The premise of your whole argument is that animals are to be owned by someone, like a possession, and be confined to a home or a cage, and be corrected or even physically punished like the kid shows in this video, until they become and behave like you want them to. Are you really an animal lover? You're more like an animal keeper.
Irony, is something I can use very well, but I have personal reasons of why i used it. I do love animals very much. Nothing you say can ever stop that, it's merley your opinion. I never said that animals are to be owned by someone, lpossessioned, to be confined to a home or a cage. I do not agree with physical punishment of animals, this boy is NOT hurting this ferret, your veiws are your veiws. I will not disregard that, in fact i've never met anyone like you with such ideals. I respect that.
@RJLeffmann Clearly you know nothing about ferret ownership. The ferret was not 'struggling'. Many ferrets just can't sit still. They just want to keep on the move. Scruffing a ferret is natural. They scruff each other in play. Vets also scruff ferrets during examinations. It keeps them calm. As the video points out, it makes them yawn. It doesn't hurt them at all and it does not cause discomfort. Educate yourself about ferret care before you go off at this kid. He is doing fine.
@satomi325 No that's right, I don't know anything about animal ownership. You're clearly someone who rough-handles and claims ownership over animals, like possessions, but I'm not. Why would I want to educate myself on something I so strongly object to? You have managed to read and yet completely miss the entire point of my comments here.
@RJLeffmann I did not say animal ownership.I specifically said "Ferret Ownership".As an Animal Biologist and Pre-vet,I love my animals very much.I do not rough handle any of them.I have read the comments, and the majority of them agree with me.You're the one who has not been reading.Scruffing does NO'T HURT them.Perhaps another animal, yes.But it is built into Ferret physiology.Ferrets scruff eachother often.I mentioned before, it calms them. And the video is about controlling a biter.
@RJLeffmann Cont: The boy in the video is not dominating the ferret. He is not hurting the ferret. He is NOT punishing the ferret. It is just a way to properly restrain the animal. Again, for the 3 or 4th time, it CALMS THEM.It's also a way to tell the ferret that biting is an unwanted behavior. Please ask any ferret known vet.Scruffing is a common practice in the ferret community.Or ask any ferret owner in the world.Or watch ANY ferret grooming video here on YT.Every one of them will show scruffing
@RJLeffmann Another thing regarding the video. The boy even comments on supporting the ferret's bottom while scruffing. If he was purposely man handling the ferret,he wouldn't have said that.Since you seem like an pro-animal welfare person,I would suggest fighting against people who actually deserve it.This boy is doing this correctly. However a few weeks ago, a man in Missouri threw his baby ferret multiple times against a wall because it was a biter. THOSE are the kinds of people to go after.
Hey Jesse -- looks like you're doing well working on the biting!! I wanted to tell you about an idea I tried with my ferret, too...when he would bite me as a kit, I would either put my finger farther back into his mouth to the point that it was uncomfortable/surprising to him (not down his throat though!), or I would pull a couple of his whiskers. I know these sound like mean things to do but they did help in addition to the scruffing, which I reserved for when he chomped and didn't let go. :)
lol @ people who think scruffing a ferret is 'cruel'.

Hope this helps.
turisalba 6 months ago
@turisalba Kits are already born with their winter fur, that's why they look so huge in their first year, after spring, they get much much smaller :)
jeeeesssiie 6 months ago
@katoudupuis Probably because you have girls. Girls are always much much smaller than boys :)
jeeeesssiie 6 months ago
@jeeeesssiie but then again, I have 3 boys as well, 2 one year olds - one is huge, one is tiny and a baby ferret who's almost bigger than the smaller 1 year old. It depends on the ferret :)
jeeeesssiie 6 months ago
@katoudupuis no worrie, we got a 5 year old ferret named freddy, he is like 900 gram, and the other two named pablo and diego are twice as heavy as he, and guess what :D freddy still shows them whos the boss
draakmanz 4 months ago
@katoudupuis It might be due to their gender. Males are a lot larger than females.
theabsinthehare 1 month ago
@katoudupuis I have three ferrets now and had four previously and they were all different sizes. I have two large ferrets (long and thick) and one who is much smaller but just as healthy and active. As long as your ferrets aren't underweight, lethargic or listless they are probably just naturally smaller.
SilverRoseValley 1 month ago
@katoudupuis Are they females? Girls are naturally a LOT smaller than males. Also if your ferrets were mill ferrets, the early neutering stunts their growth.

@McSpaz626 WOW! Thank you for the great tip :D

Great video.

KiraRulrr09 1 year ago
he's doing it right. The ferret's not struggling. He's just hyper. They usually do that when first let out of their cages because their excited. Don't hate, just learn.

@sixflags1 I agree with you there
andytheshark 2 months ago
do they take more "embrionic pose" like cats, or just hand from your hand, when you scruff them?
EdTheBadass 1 year ago
Wow you guys are stupid hes doing it right. You do have to scruff your Ferret especially if their older males because they bite like a mother fucker. And this doesn't hurt them its what the mother would do.

McSpaz626 1 year ago
@revolutioncomming No you're stupid. Do you know anything about ferrets?! Clearly from your response to the video, no. No you don't know anything about ferrets. Scruffing a ferret does not hurt the animal. Ferrets scruff each other in play. Vet's exam ferrets by scruffing them as well. They have extremely thick and loose skin on the back of their neck. In fact, it calms them. Like the video showed, it makes them yawn. Please Educate yourself.

My ferret thinks its a baby. It sleeps almost 18 hours a day and it sits on my stomach likkin me
dinobird2000 1 year ago
Let it down, don't you understand it's struggling because it doesn't like when you grasp it? It's not a toy, and if you can't live with an animal without thinking it needs to be controlled and obey you then don't get one.
RJLeffmann 1 year ago
@RJLeffmann fuck you
i dnt do it at all becuz i can tell he struggles, i was only explaining how to controll a ferret if they bite alot, so yer im pretty sure i no tht its not a fking toy so get a life u stupid fuck! get ya facts straight b4 u say them ok?!?!
McSpaz626 1 year ago
@RJLeffmann
It's struggling because it's a FERRET. They don't like to sit still for long or be held for long. It's not struggling because it's in pain or it doesn't like it! Do you even own a ferret? A ferret owner would know that IT IS OKAY TO SCRUFF IT!
unicornlizzie 1 year ago
@unicornlizzie No I don't _own_ any animals. I would never force anything upon an animal such as restraining it, locking it inside a cage, forcing it to do tricks or do/be as I want it to, or worse to _punish_ it for not obeying. I understand this is the view you have of animals and how they should be treated, and this is the big difference between me and people like you. I'm an animal lover, you're someone who wants to control animals. We can agree to disagree and leave it at that.
RJLeffmann 1 year ago
@RJLeffmann You got to remember the environment animals all come from. If I held a dog on it's side on the ground not letting it move, but knowing it was psychically perfectly fine. It would be teaching it a mental lesson, and that would be that I'm the boss, and what I say goes. Animals want that, it stabilizes them so they know whats up. Which is exactly what dog do in the wild which there packs, they show signs of dominance.
R0MDogg 1 year ago
@RJLeffmann So.. if you had a pet, that was always biting, breaking your furniture and such, wouldn't you like it to stop? I mean I don't agree with hitting it or abusing it until it stops, but at least each it with treats or so that what it does is wrong o.o. I see that you haven't had a ferret, or a pet. Try owning one. Since you this so called animal lover.
KiraRulrr09 1 year ago
@KiraRulrr09 Do you see the irony in what you write? The premise of your whole argument is that animals are to be owned by someone, like a possession, and be confined to a home or a cage, and be corrected or even physically punished like the kid shows in this video, until they become and behave like you want them to. Are you really an animal lover? You're more like an animal keeper.
RJLeffmann 1 year ago
Irony, is something I can use very well, but I have personal reasons of why i used it. I do love animals very much. Nothing you say can ever stop that, it's merley your opinion. I never said that animals are to be owned by someone, lpossessioned, to be confined to a home or a cage. I do not agree with physical punishment of animals, this boy is NOT hurting this ferret, your veiws are your veiws. I will not disregard that, in fact i've never met anyone like you with such ideals. I respect that.
KiraRulrr09 1 year ago
@RJLeffmann Clearly you know nothing about ferret ownership. The ferret was not 'struggling'. Many ferrets just can't sit still. They just want to keep on the move. Scruffing a ferret is natural. They scruff each other in play. Vets also scruff ferrets during examinations. It keeps them calm. As the video points out, it makes them yawn. It doesn't hurt them at all and it does not cause discomfort. Educate yourself about ferret care before you go off at this kid. He is doing fine.
satomi325 1 year ago
@satomi325 No that's right, I don't know anything about animal ownership. You're clearly someone who rough-handles and claims ownership over animals, like possessions, but I'm not. Why would I want to educate myself on something I so strongly object to? You have managed to read and yet completely miss the entire point of my comments here.
RJLeffmann 1 year ago
@RJLeffmann I did not say animal ownership.I specifically said "Ferret Ownership".As an Animal Biologist and Pre-vet,I love my animals very much.I do not rough handle any of them.I have read the comments, and the majority of them agree with me.You're the one who has not been reading.Scruffing does NO'T HURT them.Perhaps another animal, yes.But it is built into Ferret physiology.Ferrets scruff eachother often.I mentioned before, it calms them. And the video is about controlling a biter.
satomi325 1 year ago
@RJLeffmann Cont: The boy in the video is not dominating the ferret. He is not hurting the ferret. He is NOT punishing the ferret. It is just a way to properly restrain the animal. Again, for the 3 or 4th time, it CALMS THEM.It's also a way to tell the ferret that biting is an unwanted behavior. Please ask any ferret known vet.Scruffing is a common practice in the ferret community.Or ask any ferret owner in the world.Or watch ANY ferret grooming video here on YT.Every one of them will show scruffing
satomi325 1 year ago
@RJLeffmann Another thing regarding the video. The boy even comments on supporting the ferret's bottom while scruffing. If he was purposely man handling the ferret,he wouldn't have said that.Since you seem like an pro-animal welfare person,I would suggest fighting against people who actually deserve it.This boy is doing this correctly. However a few weeks ago, a man in Missouri threw his baby ferret multiple times against a wall because it was a biter. THOSE are the kinds of people to go after.

McSpaz626 2 years ago
Hey Jesse -- looks like you're doing well working on the biting!! I wanted to tell you about an idea I tried with my ferret, too...when he would bite me as a kit, I would either put my finger farther back into his mouth to the point that it was uncomfortable/surprising to him (not down his throat though!), or I would pull a couple of his whiskers. I know these sound like mean things to do but they did help in addition to the scruffing, which I reserved for when he chomped and didn't let go. :)
tikifeet 2 years ago
Yeah ok thanks for that but i allready knew about telling them "NO". so yer thanks again
regards
jesse
McSpaz626 2 years ago
Please remember that scruffing should only be used occasionally, and adding a vocal "NO" will also help control the biting.
