Although it's probably not a big deal, I hate to start an engine dry like that after an oil change. So I like to disconnect the ignition and crank it over until pressure builds.
I started doing that on my old car, because it seemed like I could detect a distinct smell for a few seconds on the first start. It was basically impossible to prefill the filter on that car, because it mounted sideways.
Most of all the vehicles we have in our lot take 4.5 quarts of oil with a filter. Four quarts without a new filter. I think the old GMC diesel might take more oil than 4.5 quarts. And if my truck had a bigger engine (like a 6.0 liter or a diesel) it would take more oil.
So you dont put 5 quarts?? i have 5 single quart bottles. i actually have a box of 12 10-w30 and 12 of 10-w40 i know to use the 30 But i dont put all 5 quarts???
nice video. by the way, is it common for the oil light to come on because of the switch itself? after an oil change at midas (where im never going back to again), the oil pressure light came on. the engine sounds just fine and i know i have an oil leak (in which i check every often) has anyone ever had this problem?
The oil light should come on temporarily as the oil pump builds pressure in the engine causing the light to go out after a few seconds.
If the light doesn't go out after a few seconds shut off the engine right away and check for any thing that doesn't look right. Leaking oil, loose filter, loose pan plug or a bad sensor.
The oil light should only come on momentarily as the engine builds up pressure again. If it stays on, you have a problem or a bad sensor.
Whatever the case, it needs to be fixed, or you could end up shopping for a car or buying/rebuilding an engine soon. Fix it before you learn an expensive lesson!
If Midas broke something, they are responsible for fixing it, although they may need some prodding. (This is why the Keykeeper and I do it ourselves. Then we know it's done right.)
You are fortunate, since the Buick cars only have an "idiot light" on the dash. However, the oil pressure definitely should come up within seconds of the first start after an oil change--or maybe even when the engine has been sitting for a while and all the oil is back in the pan.

I notice with my Cavalier, I have an oil pressure gauge, it reads 0 PSI for a few seconds before shooting up to the correct PSI.

That's exactly why I do my own too. Something breaks, I only have myself to be mad at!
