To earn extra money during the Depression, Gene & his brother Fred used to do this very routine in cheap night clubs. This video is from his movie, It's Always Fair Weather" circa 1955. Betty Comden (the screenplay writer) saw Gene do this routine while chillin'in her backyard & thought to add this in the movie. You can hear Gene's daughter tell the full story on Icons Radio.

@therealcritic28 Fred Astaire and Gingers Rogers were the first to dance on Roller Skates, Gene Kelly got the idea from watching his Idol Fred Astaire in the musical Shall We Dance with Ginger Rogers only he flew solo. Gene dancin with Jerry Mouse in Anchors Aweigh was way ahead of his time considerin the techology they had then compared to today.

Yes, Astaire's number with Ginger preceded Gene's 1955 version but Kelly had learned to skate as a boy in Pittsburgh. He later did routines in night clubs w/ his brother Fred for some money. They added tricks & tapping on skates to make they're act more interesting. It was only when Kelly was doing this routine@ home that Betty Comden said that it should be on film. Gene could've done this in his sleep!
