  • Absolutely love this video. As expected Willie hits it out of the park on this one.

  • Impressive performance Willie!

  • Very cool my friend!

  • superb

  • Like it mate.

  • ..that was so cool..I saw Willie many years ago when he played a concert at Western Springs,Tamaki Rau,Aotearoa...

  • Emmy's and Spyboy's version is the best!

  • While I'm not a religious music fan, this song is very powerful, the guitarist, makes this song, first thought it was Stevie Van Zandt, excellent song.

  • @1959GKevin

The guitarist is Daniel Lanois, who wrote the song.

  • Above and beyond everything about the song--which is of genius and God to be sure--is Willie's attention and dedication to making the song come out as heartfelt and genuine as possible. He and Emmy seem both is awe and transfixed by Mr Lanois and rightfully so...my fav moment is at the very end when Willie looks up and has the "there but for the grace of God go I " look in his eyes--like hes truly thankful to be a part of that song while it was happening.

  • These three are spiritual songsters of our time

not many inspire us, but they do

This song makes me cry every time

    I hear it....such a picture of hopelessness

    turning to God for help

  • 4:47 Emmylou falls into a trance and is making love to the music

  • Lovely with Willie but outstanding with Emmylou

  • Emmy is as beautiful and talented as ever. And Willie? Well he's just Willie. Like Waylon said,"He just wants to ride around in that bus and play that ol' beat up guitar."

  • @Ebeneezerable He makes music and plays golf. What a life

  • Dave Matthews mastered this song. Sorry to everyone who disagrees.

  • She's not amused, isn't she?

  • Love this. I think I read somewhere that Willie's TIMING is special to Willie and I think Emmylou has to keep her eyes on him to be able to keep with him.

  • Willie is the maker

  • 12 people are deaf.

  • dave matthews' and tim reynolds version is better in my opinion. this is a great song and willie sonds, well, ok.

  • Willie Nelson is one of the most talented men in the Business... He never stops amazing us / me with his versatile writings and song. Love You Willie..

  • Ive allways had a soft spot for Willie, but, Emmylou, Emmylou. Emmylou XXX

  • Jesus... wounderful!

  • closer to god, these people are...

  • I'm a great fan of anything Danny Lanois produces and writes. When his album Acadie got released in the late 80s I loved the song The Maker instantly.

Although I greatly apreciate Nelsons works I don't like the long bendings in his vocal here. Those bendings sound great when he sings his own material, but here they don't.

Theatro is a pretty good album produced by Lanois. Lanois also produced Mrs Harris' album Wrecking Ball.

I would love to hear The Maker sung by Emmylou and Danny alone.

  • @Navarrethenavman Emmylou does a live version of the Maker on her album Spyboy which is just amazing.

  • @Navarrethenavman Emmylou does a live version of the Maker on her album Spyboy which is just amazing.

  • Stunning.

  • I think the important thing is that Willie is singing about THE Maker - God - of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - The Lord Jesus Christ and not being known by HIM. Wonder how many others won't be known? Best to choose to know the Lord while you have the chance.

  • @123ktkit6 I really like this song but can't listen to it without praying for ol' Willie to NOT be a stranger to the Lord when he meets Him.

  • @123ktkit6 Schmuck.

  • @cmsquared63 Tough Crowd

  • Damn, That was wicked good.

  • Bravo, Bravo, Bravo!!!! This is the kind of stuff that keeps this ol world of ours together. Thanks for makin music!! Trailrboy

  • Who is the guitarist playing the Telecaster?

  • @bddmhopp5 it's Daniel Lanois, MAGIC!!!

  • Excellent!

  • i love this song

  • That 99% that Willie speaks of in the intro are those of that are not with Emmylou. She would probably be the first choice of millions of men. To wake up looking at her and go to sleep listening to her would be a slice of heaven.

  • this is nothing compared to the dave matthews version

  • i've always said that Miss Emmylou is my dream girl ( & i'm happily married) smokin' hot w/ the voice of an angel

  • Look at all that talent, I would love to be there and meet those three.

What talent, I would just stop breathing-in awe of the years of brilliance right there before me.

  • Emmylou just gets increasingly gorgeous with age. Great song, great musicians, great recording. Thanks for sharing.

  • When I saw it was Emmylou and Wilie, I knew it would be good, but adding that guitar sound - Lord have mercy! I'd forgotten what Daniel Lanois looked like and didn't realize it was him 'til the comments. I didn't know he was such a guitar player - I only knew of him as a producer. Fabulous song.

  • Awesome

  • You talk to her we translate mworld5.info

  • Anyone who dont like this needs to go pray and pray hard. :)

  • @RandomSpewBros2 yes it is :)

  • Not too bad for a pair of old gits..

  • Brian Griffith is........

  • I can't hear Emmy at all.

  • I don't know whether to sing, dance or cry to this song! It brings up so many conflicting/competing emotions! The two together are incredible!

  • I love this man!

  • Willie,

If u catch this on the ethers, we were at your 50th and 70th, you are unique and all ages love you .. love lasts... Spirit in you flows to all of us. once down the road at Red Rocks Evergreen and down to Tasmania.

  • Love this song. Fantastic voice. Great song.

  • Total genius.

  • Wilie Nelson has the soul of a '55 Chevey! Daniel Lanois shifts them gears!

  • Willie Nelson's face: 5:09. Doesn't get any more classic than that. Just perfection.

  • Beautiful song

  • Never heard this one before this is great

  • check out the jerry garica version... its floatin around somewhere on the internets

  • The Jerry version is haunting, beautiful !

  • I have this album by Daniel Lanois, both the cd and tape for the car. Love this album by Daniel Lanois. Jolie Louise, Sillium Hill, Under Stormy Skies, etc are on this tape. Great music, wore first one out, now have cd and tape.

  • daniel lanois is the maker

  • V Good song by Willie, but my Emmylou is a Wonderful Muse.

  • Daniel Lanois is a genius...

  • @spf1410

    you know it!

  • @spf1410 yup

  • Is there anybody on the planet that this woman can't sing with. I heard a comment once that everything tastes better with peanut butter on it and everything sounds better with Emmylou in it. I bought this cd and have about wore out this track.

  • me too....

  • Comment removed

  • I have been trying to find this CD just for this song. What is the name of the CD? I NEED IT!!!

  • The Willy Nelson CD is Teatro. I bought mine on ebay for 3 bucks. The Emmylou version is on Spyboy. Enjoy them both.

  • Teatro!

  • maybe you found the album already... and if not: The Maker is on the album called ACADIE by Daniel Lanois, edited by Opal/Warner Bros., 9 25969-2

  • @coozamel

Such a sweet voice. She could sing with a bunch of mechanics and make them sound good!! (no offense to the mechanics) :)

  • @coozamel Of course, she's a fairy! Anything her voice touches is blessed! But Lanois is not zero, nor Welson!Love his smile at the very end, expecting satisfaction from that bloody cajun!

  • @coozamel I actually do believe you're right. She's just so talented and is able to do her own wonderful thing, but knows how to give the artists that she works with enough room to make their own magic as well and that's the mark of a true and confident artist. She another example of a musician's musician. Peace.

  • @coozamel She is so good have you heard her with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt??? they sound like Triplets...

  • Beautiful song and lyrics ...

  • Oops.... spelt Willie Nelson name wrong!! My bad!! Respect!!

  • I love Daniel Lanois original version of this song....but this version with Willy Nelson and Emmylou Harris takes it to another level!! Awesome!!

  • wow just wow

  • Drummer looks so cool playing while smoking...

  • I used to play that way...thank God, I finally quit the nasty habit...it was Killing Me~

  • Goosebumps on top of goosebumps. Made even more amazing by the presence of Mr. Lanois.

  • fantastic. thank you.'

    5 stars!

  • very well maybe Willie's best song ever

  • It´s actually not Willies song, this is a cover. The guitarist in the video has made this song in the early 90´s. His name is Daniel Lanois. ;)

  • This is such a annointed , beautiful song I fell the Holy Spirit is here as I hear the words, so true and so forgiving is the Holy Spirit, Im glad that Willie Nelson saw the light!!!!! Sonia from Hollywood, CA 7/23/09

  • willie doesn't give a shit about christ

  • @pajiad191 - he's got dozens of gospel songs to his name - most recently amazing grace - he always gives

  • Merci Daniel, merci Willie, ca fait bien!

  • No words, no words.

  • Beautiful

  • great tune

  • esta melodia entra na alma e faz vc viajar com o som dessa guitarra simplesmente maravilha

  • IM going to see dmb tonight at fenway and willie is opening for them. it would be epic if they got together and played this

  • Dave Matthews is a talented musician, but even he would admit that he's not fit to tie the shoes of Daniel Lanois, let alone those of of Willie Nelson or Emmylou Harris.

  • this is so beautiful, Willie at his best

  • This is such a great song and superb version by Willie Nelson. But my favorite is the studio version during the credits at the end of Sling Blade by Dan Lanois.

  • absolut großartige version.

  • Brilliant! Why on earth can't all bands use this kind of guitar, it's like it has soul.

  • Best thing is to see ELH watching and matching Willie's phrasing so closely at 4:00.

  • Jerry Band is the way to fly...see the response... actually Jerry's first tyme played, captured on film, sent to D.Lanois by me ten years ago. This JGB dvd is now posted at Lossless Legs...3 in total

  • This was recorded on the 2nd take in the studio after a dissagreement between Willie's management and the studio over Lanois' playing. Willie sang the 2nd take, Emmylou looked nervous throughout, but all came to pass. it made it, it was real, there was emotion, and real desire in the take as well as fear, and longing. That made the song and Willie knew that, and you can see him smile at the end, knowing they had done a perfect take on the song, by giving Danny his free rein on then guitar.

  • Lanois wrote the song...ck. out his '89 cd "Acadie"!!

"that guitarist is cool, love the opening riffs. never heard of him before but google his name - "Daniel Lanois"???? "

  • Hallelujah..

  • Dave Matthews Fenway 09

  • you're taste is all in your mouth

  • I love Daniel singing this song, but one of the reasons I love this version as well is because of the opening.

  • Great song-I saw a version of Willie Nelson doing this on here and it was from the David Letterman show-Has anyone seen it?? It was really good and I haven't seen it in a while now?

  • that guitarist is cool, love the opening riffs. never heard of him before but google his name - "Daniel Lanois"????

  • that "guitarist" is one of the most amazing artists alive!!! Check out his other compositions.

  • Try his early album "Acadie"

  • Its amazing how he makes you really feel what hes playing. I got to say that it was like a loud familiar comforting voice that vibrates the soul. I dunno it just feels so good to hear this music. God Bless You All!!!! Long Live Wille Nelson and his band of friends.

  • God, every time I see Lanois' convulsive playing it takes me back to the first time I ever saw him.

Anyone remember that PBS series, Sessions at West 54th--or something? That's where I fell in love with his sound.

I've got it on VHS somewhere and it's time for another listen, lol.

  • Perfect song for Willie. The one who is driving the song is Lanois. It's his the whole way through. The only better version is of Lanois singing it. Good version on Acadie.

  • I love how Willie is clearly pushing his vocals to the limit, and Lanois' jumpy, impassioned guitar work.

  • isn't it great how willie brings a little bit of chaos to a song that they all know, maybe too well. and the way emmy-lou follow him, every breath... just awesome

  • Nice real nice. All of them. Liked Daniel Lanois burning them strings at the end. Beautiful song and inspirational words to match.

  • emmylou is such a lady.

  • A very cool song. The guitarist is the man.

  • Yes he is!

  • Harmony is the true mark of s good voice and a true artist in my humble opinion IMHO, but what do i know right????

  • absolutly beautiful they sing great together...

  • wow, the your right, the way emmy looks at willie, it's like this longing/true admiration and love in her eye, at least that's what I think I see.

  • Yeah, I thot that originally too. But now, having watched alot of her videos, I think she is actually taking visual cues as regards to when she comes in with her harmonies...watch a few and tell me what you think. I've just booked my tickets for Sept in Glasgow and I am way excited! Awesome woman, awesome voice.

  • I'm also going to see this angel in Dublin in SEPT. Cant wait to see this living legend

  • cool..ur rite, she is a living legend. I think she's so beautiful and talented. Hope both nights are great!

  • You are right, IMO. I watched an interview with Gram Parson on youtube where he said part of Emmylou's harmony skills was her ability top sing with anybody if she could see their eyes... that this telegraphed the changes and their style or something like that. The video is called something like Gram Parsons talks about Emmylou Harris; it's still photos with him talking about her.

  • that's interesting..i watched the video u talked abt...wot does IMO mean? ..sorry, i'm not very hip!

  • IMO means in my opinion ... at least that's what I used it for. :)

  • Oh! ok..now i know something i didn't know yesturday!

  • I love the way Emmylou keeps looking at Willie

  • I absolutely love this song. Two of my favourite singers and true legends, absolutely magnificent singer songwriters. Emmylou has the voice of an angel

  • There is no "greatest musician alive" (sic). However, there are conventions and standards by which we measure artistic accomplishment, and they are somewhat genre-specific. It is also characteristic of generous-spirited artists that they cross boundaries from time-to-time, often with mixed results, but so what-- it's an expression of their taste and admiration, if not always their excellence. Lighten up and love the music-- it's not a competition. BTW, Dave Matthews is great.

  • Well this is a great version though.

I do love the original Lanois version , and of course the Spyboy version , with Darryls "continuum"-intro. Great stuff.

Cant stand that Matthews dude though.

  • ...no he isnt.

  • Yes he is, you fuckin' bird.

  • he literally isn't.

    you fuckin' rherbst

  • ..this song has so many elements..some how its deeply spiritual, got such a good groove goin on, i love how it effects willie when he sings it..emmy of course is the icing on the cake with her haunting vocals. Just loving this.

  • ...funky - willie n emmy you so got it...loviin it so much xx

  • That lanois boy can write good songs and plays good guitar but Willie is the only version i've heard that can make this song palatable. I've heard lanois version all the way thru and was so glad when it was over. Was hoping someone could rock it like willie does. But lanois definitly is a great songwriter. I couldnt have this for a favorite without him.Different tastes in music i guess.

  • listen to Emmylou Harris' Spyboy cover

    its the best

  • Hi my name is Richie and I wanted to tell you that I worship Dave Matthews' b#$& sweat. What a moron. Notice who is PLAYING on the Wille version.....Daniel Lanois.....the writer of the song.

  • dave matthews rocks!
