  • I'm a very proud descendent!

  • I sure would like to know what tuning his fiddle was in. This is a great video of two masters of old timey.

  • @TheGhost5600 According to Brad Leftwich's "Old time fiddle - round peak style" Tommy played this in AEAE tuning.

  • First time I've seen & heard a fiddle played from a barber's chair. I can almost smell the bay rum. Tommy was indeed one of the OT greats. Even after his death, he continues to awe and inspire.

  • Bill's Barber Shop (since renamed) is at the intersection of Toast Road and S. Franklin Rd. in Mount Airy, NC. About 2 miles north of Tommy's home, which stands on the north corner of S. Franklin Rd. and Summit Drive.

  • i love the old time fiddel tunes and those people were good fiddlers i do some simple ones on my clawhammer banjo open back not as good like the real deal tho

  • tommy kicks so much ass

  • I have yet to hear a better fiddler. Just my 2 cents.

As someone once posted..." I don't care what Tommy plays as long as he's playing."

  • LOVE this video. at 83, tommy was still one of the best fiddlers ever. i was so grateful to have met tommy in 1984 before he died. we had a lovely talk over a plate of hi-test beans.

  • I've never seen this video before! Sure makes me miss Tommy. And damn fine banjo playing, David!

  • I LOVED this show on TNN, I never missed an episode. Is any of the

    whole episodes on here?

  • Wonder where that was filmed. It's a great tune, but none of the other fellows in the barber chairs were tapping their feet. Hmmm. Must have thought the fiddle and banjer was devil music. Great fiddlin' by the late Tommy Jarrell. Ol Dave ain't to shabby on that fretless five string either.

  • scottstanton, this isn't bluegrass, it's old-time, which is what Bluegrass came out of..it's different..Toast and Mt. Airy are very cool towns..as was ol' Tommy..Thanks for posing..

  • The first notes gave me a shiver. It's not often you hear 70 years of experience on ANY instrument, and what a beautiful sound. Wow. And props to David Holt for keeping up with this mastery.

  • Had the privilege to hear him play briefly at Duke; a small festival they had on campus.

  • man he comes alive when he plays bluegrass !!!

  • I wanna go to Toast, NC!

    TOAST!!!

  • Hey David, you wore the same hat when I met you at Tommy's.

  • amazing!!

  • 5/5 for sure...GREAT VIDEO!
