I love how Max develops his solo. His first couple of measures always tells us what the solo is about and then he goes on to embellish it and make it grow while always leaving the original lick present. I like how he uses silence in between ideas. Making us wonder what he'll play next.
The thing I love about Max is his solos are so melodic. Sure he could shred with the best of them when needed, but the melodic side of his playing is what always made him stand out. He was amazing.
I have been searching for this video for so long! Thank you so much for uploading it! It is such a treasure and hopefully young ( younger I should say, I am only in my late twenties) drummers will see this while searching YouTube for new ideas and will learn what great and true musicianship on the drums is supposed to sound like. I am not even a jazz drummer I play mostly progressive metal, alternative rock and country but I look to the greats and solos like this for inspiration all the time.
@MrJesseG123 I heard that he liked using a 13" on top of a 14" because with a smaller cymbal on top, the air is pushed up and out, and if you have two cymbals the same size the air is pushed out to the side.
I think I've seen Jeff Ballard playing with a similar set.
It's so fun to listen to drum solos like this. It's about ideas, pauses, tones and taste. One can almost hear Max thinking....not proving but sharing the beat of his life. John-Hans Melcher "TheQuietDrummer"
this solos are those from the record "Drums Unlimited". The difference is that instead of "The Drum Also Walzes" he plays another tune in 5/4. Just amazing. Thank you so much for posting these treasures!
Wow , im so happy that back then they knew that one day there was gonna be a youtube :)

One of the best drum solos . So much better than the all out bashing of today. He plays an instrument, not bash a drum. Thx for posting.

This solo is so much more satisfying to the ears than some of those "everything but the kitchen sink" solos. Very chill.
