  • The one who posted this video is being very dishonest and wrong in taking the filming out of context, chopping it up to suit his purpose and foolishly discrediting the famous Heifetz who is performing here as a musical joke. I strongly suggest the poster, jonifoni, do the right thing and correct the error they have wrongly inserted in the heading. Shame on you for disrespecting the genius talent of Heifetz! I have done a "thumbs down" due to the heading.

  • oh god he was joking..@the one who uploaded-u r a moron

  • this sounds just like most of my performances... :P

  • only a remarkable idiot (or, even worse, a person with no sense of humor)could think this was FOR REAL. Heifetz was imitating somebody and I could even possibly think whom he wanted to play...

  • Heifetz is not very good at joking.

  • whats the name of this piece??

  • Okay, the body movements at 3:50 are pretty funny.

  • Inconfident is not even a word.

  • @azcello but unconfident is. Maybe it was incompetent.

  • that sounds like me playing xD

  • Mr. Heifetz, tells the story of someone who audition for him with this concerto. So, this is an explanation to all his star students.

  • yeah he was just satirizing an audition he had to hear. you'd have to see the original masterclass to understand.

  • what is the original of this video?

  • shouldnt this video be reported and banned?

  • what a joke. if you actually saw the master class it is a demenstration of a terrible audition he had to listen to.

  • The poster of the video, however, should think twice before posting a title as what he/she has done. It shows lack of education and lack of respect for someone who's set a standard that most musicians look up to and try to emulate today. Something more appropriate would be: (RARE!) Heifetz Humor - Shows how to Nervously Shred Notes in Master Class.

  • ...I also believe that it was a strategy to break the ice with his students opening the door for bringing out the best in them. IE...breaking the intimidation factor. I believe he really wanted his students to succeed with him. Again...I love it!

  • I LOVE IT!! It shows a more relaxed, humorous side of the notoriously serious and perfectionist of a musician that Mr. Heifetz had been known to be. It shows how confident a musician he was by playing this piece in this manner in front of a camera knowing that future generations long after he was gone would be seeing this....

  • Yup...this is misleading. I guess this is a certain type of humor that I don't share with the person who uploaded this video.

  • This is freaking hilarious ttm. Thanks for the vid! ;)

  • Fine, if you say so, I will have to take your word for it as an evident expert on you-tube culture for the time being. (I can always just search on that word now to check that out). That still doesn't explain "gets nervous" which is false and misleading, or your shoddy editing. Fortunately there are other uploads of this which feature both the joke and the punchline.

  • Just gave it thumbs down for the title and text, and editing out the important lead-in when he explains to the class what he is about to do.

  • @ObscureAuteur

If you watched the whole thing you'd know this was meant to be a joke. Glad you enjoy the humor.

  • @jonifoni I did not need to "watch the whole thing" because I had seen the entire master class film before. It is the way you uploaded it edited at the front and labeled it to suggest that Heifetz was actually suffering from real performance problems that is objectionable. It is a disservice to those who do not know much about classical music, the violin, and Heifetz who will see this video the way you have presented it. There is at least one other upload that includes the intro.

  • @ObscureAuteur

Seems like you have a little disconnect with the youtube culture. 99% of the "shred" videos of famous musicians on youtube are jokes: anyone who watches these types of videos generally have the expectation that its a joke.

  • @jonifoni But the shred videos on YouTube are all videos that have been overdubbed, right? Looks like this hasn't been. So it's a little bit apart from the shred videos. But thanks for uploading this...

@ObscureAuteur, is the full video of this masterclass session online?

  • The uploader should be ashamed of the misleading title and worse description text he has put on the video and for omitting the lead-in when Heifetz explains that he about to imitate a bad audition he once had to endure, and claims he is not exaggerating.

  • IT IS A JOKE! Heifetz is cruelly impersonating an exceptionally bad audition he was required to endure in the course of his work. The poster is pulling your leg or a complete idiot. This video is from the master classes, he explains before he starts what he is going to do and that he is NOT exaggerating. They are laughing at the performance as a joke it is. Heifetz could do anything, meaning anything, that could be done in the way of violin playing, at will.

  • GENIO!!!

Lo que daría para que me diera una lección de estas!!! Uno se ríe, pero más de uno quisiera poder llegar a bromear de esta forma..., y muchos, ni tomándoselo en serio llegarían a tocar de esta forma.... GRANDE!!! UNICO!!!

  • you need to a genious to do this

  • @dogtransport Its a joke...

  • @jonifoni I think dogtransport was joking too.

  • @dogtransport Explain why his students are laughing :P

  • @crazynugget8 Because this is a joke. He is intentionally, and he claims totally accurately, imitating a terrible audition he was forced to endure. The uploader left out the explanation that Heifetz gives before he starts. Apparently the uploader wants to fool us into thinking Heifetz actually choked in this small setting with his students which is totally ridiculous.

  • @ObscureAuteur I know... i was providing the guy i was replying to that specific info :P

  • @dogtransport It just shows how talented he is, it takes one thing to play a piece perfectly, but it takes even more to play a something horribly on command and make it sound like he is not joking.

  • @dahking14 In a sense he was not joking. He claims before he starts that the auditioning player he is about to imitate was actually this bad without exaggeration on the part of Heifetz.

  • @dogtransport He was joking about when the students get nervous. The master could NEVER perform wrong in his life!

  • @dogtransport Actually it is awesome. Few great players can play this badly on purpose. And that is what is going on here, and the reason for the laughing. Heifetz is imitating a bad audition he once had to sit through, and before he starts assures this master class that it really was this bad. The uploader left out the introduction for some reason.

  • @dogtransport I don't know if you're stupid or not, but this is a joke. Get a better sense of humour,

  • Even this is better than me. T_T

  • Sounds just like me

  • I bet Heifetz practiced for this!

  • Gosh people seemed so Innocent back then. Where has it all gone?

  • @jthameschoir08 to me they all look like a bunch of ass lickers...

  • his violin still sounds good even playing like you know what.

  • Okay 3:40 is so hilarious!!!!!!!!!

  • ahsuahsuahsuahushuas... MUITO BOM...

  • why did you change the title???????? It's a shame!!!!!!!! it was doing this on purpose, to explain his students what was wrong.

  • hqhahahaha XD

  • I wish I could play this bad so well!

  • lol heifetz can't figure out how to play octaves out of tune

  • what is this piece?

  • Comment removed

  • @JayTobler1 Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto No. 4

  • You need talent to shred like that.

  • funny thing is that even though this is a "joke" and is supposed to imitate bad playing, you can still tell that it's heifetz

  • This isn't funny..?

  • @annajeehee It is supposed to be. It is a cruel impersonation of a bad audition as Heifetz explained before he started, the part left out by the upload.

  • man i feel bad for the student he imitated...what if he watched this video or something?

  • i used to think that folks like Heifetz with super-human talent couldn't even appreciate the difficulties and issues us "normal" people have while trying to perform a difficult piece under pressure. this kind of disproves my theory, although i don't think i've ever wiped my nose during a performance (4:00) :)

  • The funny part is that it's actually him playing! He was imitating an audition he heard once.

  • I strive to achieve this level forget the sound the fingers are stll great.

  • XD What a terrible violinist, I wonder who he is XD

  • Gosh playing this badly must have been difficult for him...

  • lmao love this straight super serious face during the whole playing... brilliant!

  • which piece is he playing?

  • to be fair he still sounds better than me ... haha

  • This is pretty ridiculous.... but who in the world are those people sitting, watching him? :/

  • @Coolcat607

    students, his students.

  • his octaves are mostly in tune... oops on his part!

  • He looks like Buster Keaton

  • it is my first time i saw his smile and make me smile, i like him very much now.

  • Wow, this guy play badly really well haha. You know you're good when you can make every mistake perfectly

  • Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!!!

  • Not joke but Joseph Szigeti.

    Joseph Szigeti's sound!!

  • 2:00

  • NOT inconfident. This is full of "in jokes" for violinists. I am sure this was not made to intimidate anyone! He is demonstrating faults every aspiring violinist is warned about

  • I think that heifetz was serious enough about music for people to get bad impressions. I did hear though, that if you forgot your pencil and metronome, he would kick you out of his studio.

  • Heifetz even send anonymous tape to audition for Indiana University School of Music (now known as Jacobs School of Music). He played so bad (on purpose), that the committee rejected him. Later he sent the letter explaining about the joke he made.... Just heard it recently from and IU faculty...

  • Bravissimo!!!Bello scherzo!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • It's hard for him to do like this LOL

  • i wonder if heifetz had to practice playing poorly

  • Vieuxtemp!

  • Is this Vieuxtemp's 4th?

  • Guess what. The student would have known they played badly. They probably looked back and laughed. This is hilarious.

  • AHAHAHA! He's intentionally playing poorly of course.

  • Dear Tilleyass, I know many musicians who either studied or worked with Heifetz. He was a mean and nasty person. Auditions are very stressful and only a really angry, heartless person would make fun of a scared student the way he did.

  • @harryvederci I guess u shud know. If you know someone who knows about Heifitz being mean, I hear hes arrogent and super strict. But it still is funny wth the shredd

  • Keeping a straight face doing this makes it even funnier!

  • Classic Joseph Hague

  • What a mean-spirited little man. I feel sorry for those poor students being put in such an uncomfortable position. Shame on Heifetz!

  • @harryvederci Heifetz wasnt being mean! He just has a sense of humor!!

  • @Tilleyass Personally I think he is being mean and having a sense of humor, that is his style. He was not the type to suffer fools gladly.

  • @harryvederci the students in these audition, master/pupil-masterclass situatinons are putting themselves in these situations.... (it is a bit mean though.....)

  • @johnnyecho Dear Johnny, the students went to Heifetz because he was a great and famous violinist. Presumably he could give them insight and help further their careers. I know several violinists who studied with him. He was not known to be a great teacher and they have all told me that he was a nasty and disagreeable person. Violist William Primrose used to record chamber music with Heifetz and when Primrose started to have hearing problems, Heifetz threw him out like an old shoe.

  • @harryvederci absolutely. you can clearly see that by the end it is nervous laughter they are displaying rather than genuine amusement.

menuhin would never have behaved like this. a true gentleman and a generous individual

  • @themusicdr You are absolutely right about Menuhin. I met him a couple of times and he struck me as a very warm and wonderful person. He really cared about his students.

  • he want to have sex with the young ladies.

  • I love how he makes a serious face even when sounding like trash

  • How is this funny.....and why are those people laughing

  • @xbasket12x because Heifetz is playing deliberately terribly as a joke - se rarecellos comment

  • @xbasket12x actually the question is.. why aren't you laughing! you're the queer one here.

  • @deandusk fuck you asshole

  • He was making a joke. Before that, he says "It's an imitation of an audition I had to hear. It's exaggerated, but not too much, not too much...."

Just wanted to make that clear to everyone....

  • @violinovic Ok,I knew it was a joke!Haha! it was so funny-a musician like him would not get nervous!

  • He didn't even smile !

  • This is hilarious.... he was imitating a bad student auditioning for him.

  • @rarecellos He probably never heard such an audition. Heifetz was well-known for doing such parodies, prefacing them with "This is something I had to listen to." He would then stand there deadpan and produce the most annoyingly scratchy music, typical of the sounds that a beginning student would make.

  • @rarecellos i'd hate to be that student and then watch this...

  • !!!!!!! What you are crazzy!!!!
