i think I've watched this video just about 1,000 times. eyedea's lyrics are SICK!!!! and abilities just destroys it with his scratching!!! if 3:24 - 4:00 doesn't get your nipples hard you're not human!!!!!
Man I miss Eyedea, such a talent. His death happened right around the time I decided to start making my own music. He was a big influence on me. I just released my first ep. I'd love it if you guys would check out my channel and told me what you thought. Thanks everyone, take care!
Mikey puts on one of the most astoundingly emotional performances. I love his singing, it's genuine. It's how most of us would sing if we had the balls to do it on camera.
This song is great, best turntable solo I EVER to be had on a song, and this is coming from someone who does turntablism like abilities, its not easy to do that type of scratching, its like hes actually hitting notes and chords. And to anyone curious as to what gear hes using.
@Sockaci Dont really know how to get my point across, but what exactly is the sound that hes scratching? like what would it be if the vinyl just played normally? Ive never heard this kind of scratching, its awesome. Same goes for his scratching on "Junk", sounds like guitar feedback or something.
@andy589 Its actually a guitar note hes scratching, and hes using the controller one to change the pitch of that guitar note, so its actually like playing a keyboard while scratching at the same time, and they say the turntable isnt an instrument. And you can actually hear the regular sound play out at 3:58 into the video, it sounds like its actually two guitar notes. Idk where you could get that sound, he probably made it himself. There are some records with sounds like that.
omg. I seriously accidentally just voted the video down, I just woke up, and I'm really stoned, so I was spacing out about how happy I was to meet DJ Abilities at a show the other day, and accidentally clicked the button. Sorry E&A
this performance and song have a vaguely gritty reminiscence of old school rock, from the 70's I know hes not hitting the notes perfectly but thats the idea, its really cool. People talk about kanye doing 'new stuff' eyedea was ahead of himself. him and Dj abilities are amazing
I love eyedea but can someone please explain to me the major change he made! I love everything from his 90's scribble jams battles to this, but what made him change more out of the hip-hop scene to the long hair more singer type thing? I'm not trying to diss eyedea, hes #1 in my book, I just don't get it.
@gugigistufandog Eyedea was a metalhead as a young kid, and he just liked to try out a lot of music styles I guess. Lots of artists change as they mature and reach later phases of their lives. Slug now is a lot different from 2000 Slug as well.
@gugigistufandog I think it was depression that made him grow the hair and the rock music might be more of a better catalyst for the depression and to get it across.
@LegendarySpartan117 or as an indivudual he felt better adapt with long hair because the midwest is fuckin cold... people say comptons hard lets see you spend a winter in 60 below win chills and feet deep of snow... shovln that shit... blows more dick then herion hookers..

Haha, sounds like Eyedea's voice was kinda dying in this one. Ah well, not the best live performance, but I'm assuming that's when happens when you rip song after song live. Great album though.
Clearly These guys have some fans that aren't quite such huge fans of both punk rock and hip hop, because to those that are, this album is absolute gold...
Abilities kills it sooo hard at the end of this track..
Eyedea will always be sick, this entire album is actually sick as hell. Rather listen to some of these tracks than First Born. You can only eat so much acid and listen to so much recorded ego death before you wanna hear something that doesn't drive you completely insane no matter how poetically put it is.
I am a huge E & A fan but this song sounds wrong. The way he spits his rhymes sounds weird with such a down tempo beat. This is the only track I skip on any of their albums.

I really Like Eyedea & Abilities. Personally I liked the Hip Hop from his earlier albums more but I think I am just confused with the transition, it isn't that it is bad cause I do like it... I'm Just a little confused.
the man is a musician through and through. his voice is his medium and hes using it to make the song the best it can be. listen to the whole song not just him.
I heard their cd once and never gave them another thought. Then I went to see Atmosphere who these guys opened for. I think I enjoyed them as much as Slug's show =D
I've listened to spin cycle 78 times according to itunes lol, not to mention the times i've skipped the track at the ending to get to Times Flies When You Have a Gun lol. E&A are beasts even if their sound changed.
Okay E&A are ridiculously talented and I would say that any underground artist would agree with that. For those who don't make music I see how this would disappoint you. No mike is not a good singer in this performance but that's not the point. E&A are what music should be moving towards. Instead of having to maintain this huge ego they have room to do whatever creatively they want. Even if you don't like it ya gotta respect them cause they're talented & creative artists.
i agree this performance aint as good as it could be
but i saw them at rock the bells recently and they did this song and performed a lot better i like this song,...and like pretty much all of By the Throat
these guys make this shit because thats their vision and expression through music you think they give a fuck about your critisms
Wow, this does not sound good live. They should at least leave the background vocals in the chorus. I like Eyedea and I like his new CD, hell I have it, but this performance needs work...
How about I say this. This album. And E&A music is obviously about the lyrical content anyway. I'm sick of everyone saying this song sucks. Because so what if it does. LISTEN TO THE WHOLE FUCKING ALBUM! All the songs are great, and Like I said this is my least favorite song on it. It does sound way different from the other songs. AND WHO REALLY GIVES A FUCK IF HE GREW HIS HAIR OUT. ANd also I'm piss at everyone saying its bad they experimented. Art is actually coming back into music. BE HAPPY!
if it was all about lyrical content, than he should write a book and upload the audio chapters, lol. i know that brooklyn skater herb would ipod that shit asap to 50-50 grind to
Hes and MC not an author. And I know this is a dumb thing to argue about be honestly, what better way to pass a message than through music? The lyrics of E&A are very thought out unlike alot of lyrics this radio bullshit and most rappers can come up with. Thats why I respect the album and other E&A music. I honestly dont like hip hop music but this is... different. Its very thought out. And maybe they did experiment but it just goes to show that music is changing for the better.
This is one of gthe few hip hop albums that I actually like all the way through. I dont see anything wrong with this album. Or his singing, he has a good tone, just kind of off key, but I dont think hes really trying anyway. But this is probably my least favorite song on the album. Its in no way emo. And so what if he grew his hair out. He's just doing his own thing, and he looks alot less goofy with it long. And either way, hes still an impressive lyrical rapper.
no man this just sucks horridly. wtf happened to eyedea.
suddenly hes on some emo-cage shit except cage sucks with shia lebouf and eyedea is sucking on some blink 182 shit. im surprised travis barker didnt do the drumwork.
Eyedea and Abilities are taking creative choices that will hopefully further the music industry and art in general. They decided to do something diverse and, in my opinion, brilliant. Note that I said "my opinion". It is YOUR opinion that this sucks...but just know that they made this type of album to spit in the face of close-minded fucks like yourself.
I just don't see how anyone can overlook the lyrical mastery in this album even if you feel like it's some "emo-cage sucking on some blink 182 shit" as my buddy 3 posts down so immaturely put it.
yeah eyedea squealing like a starved pig is musical brilliance.
god just stfu and admit the song sucks. it wasnt shitting on eyedea in general, im probably im a bigger follower than your backpacking artfaggot ass is. hence my total dissapointment and "WTF" reaction towards this crap.
forward music my ass, they experimented and it sucked. get over it and yourself.
lol@it just being opinion. its not relative to interpretation or subjective to thought, it just sucks and the only audience it caters to are the yesmen that think this self indulging crap is even remotely capable of having ANY replay value unless its to show your friends how badly nerd rap keeps evolving.
lol@the butthurt audience that can listen to this without smirking or busting out in complete laughter when you compare it the reason you became an idea fan int he first place. this is comparable to a really really bad linkin park song. it sucks and so does the musical taste of whoever cosigns it.
well put. i rest my case. this subpar crap remains in circulation and keeps the artists from REALLY achieving their full potential because yesman like yourself egg it on. good job, moron. youre the likes of which kept dose one around for so damn long, if you even know who he is.
I love the new album and their material before hand but I have to say "By the Throat" is definitely one of the most unique Hip-Hop albums I've heard in a while. I think Eyedea sings off key on purpose.
the comparison between eyedea and 50 cent or lil wayne is like comparing an orange to the scum that lives under poop!! 50 cent an lil Wayne have no idea what real music is....
love the new lp. although the choruses annoy me . eyedea cant sing for shit. fucking loving the direction of the beats and the lyrics. one of the sickest teams ever. hoping of more like this, but hold back on the crooning bro.
not a big fan of the new album. their old stuff, dope but fuck what have they done? especially when he tries to sing, fuck its almost embarrasing. the rhymes however havent changed, still as good as ever, but with the new look and sound. not digging it as much
this shit just drives me fuckin nuts... ask me 2 months ago and and E&A is basicly my shit... both records and oliver hart are fucking crazy... but man... i listen to fuckin hip hop.. and yes.. cut your fucking hair and buy some bigger jeans.. i grew up in the day and age you got beat up for lookin like that... i cant believe what the hiphop scene is becoming... im the reason little wayne is popular you better get your story strait brother... freedom of expression is one thing. this shits gay.
so you judge artists by how they dress and not their music? Also, do you only listen to hiphop? Are you too proud to admit that other genres can make great music (eg, Queen)? It's "music snobs" like you that keep outsiders and people from different backgrounds away from good hiphop music.
"buy some bigger jeans, get a fuckin haircut, and make some good ol hiphop music"
Are you serious? What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Music is an art form expressed the way the artist wants to express it and Eyedea and Abilities do an amazing job of this every single time.
I'm sure the size of his pants and the length of his hair has nothing to do with it, idiot.
This is probably the best song on the album, and that is saying a lot. I was expecting something different for sure, but this kind of different is too much. I'll try to give it a chance, but man, I would die for some old E and A. I am hoping he makes more music and kinda mixes everything back together into something solid. I am hoping the style of this album was just something he wanted to get off of his chest hahah.
it must be nice to be cage or eydea. i bet if kweli, lif, vast aire, myka 9, aceyalone, etc etc tried this route, people would call them sell outs and would accept it for one second. must be nice...
but honestly, most hip-hop is redundant. from the 50 cents to the commons.
right now...antipop consortium, thavius beck, k-the-i???, subtlte, jel, alias, buck 65, subtle, daedelus, prefuse, busdriver are pretty much the only people pushing hip-hop forward
what the fuck?! i been waiting for a new E&A albulm for way to long... and this is it? what the fuck?! take off that little hipster sweater, buy some bigger jeans, get a fuckin haircut, and make some good ol hiphop music... what the fuck?!
While this isn't an album created to impress hip hop purists who only love as
feldm4n put it "typical kick kick snare and insert punchline here...". It is one of the purest artistic hip hop albums I've heard in years. Each track has a depth that is not common in not only mainstream but much of underground hip hop. This is certainly my favorite new album in a while.
I have a tribute video of him on my channel, used this song aswell, the mans a god

I've listened to spin cycle 78 times according to itunes lol, not to mention the times i've skipped the track at the ending to get to Times Flies When You Have a Gun lol. E&A are beasts even if their sound changed.
HearingEveryRhyme 2 years ago 2
This is my favorite song on the album.... But Eyedea really needs a backup singer
pizza916 2 years ago
what the fuck is this ...eyedea stick to bein an Mc this is wackkkkkk
vatowado 2 years ago
Okay E&A are ridiculously talented and I would say that any underground artist would agree with that. For those who don't make music I see how this would disappoint you. No mike is not a good singer in this performance but that's not the point. E&A are what music should be moving towards. Instead of having to maintain this huge ego they have room to do whatever creatively they want. Even if you don't like it ya gotta respect them cause they're talented & creative artists.

BACK UP SINGERS NEEDED. from Eyedea's biggest fan.
AndrewEyedea 2 years ago 2
i agree this performance aint as good as it could be
but i saw them at rock the bells recently and they did this song and performed a lot better i like this song,...and like pretty much all of By the Throat
these guys make this shit because thats their vision and expression through music you think they give a fuck about your critisms
THC559 2 years ago 4
Wow, this does not sound good live. They should at least leave the background vocals in the chorus. I like Eyedea and I like his new CD, hell I have it, but this performance needs work...
WhitewashTheRapper 2 years ago
How about I say this. This album. And E&A music is obviously about the lyrical content anyway. I'm sick of everyone saying this song sucks. Because so what if it does. LISTEN TO THE WHOLE FUCKING ALBUM! All the songs are great, and Like I said this is my least favorite song on it. It does sound way different from the other songs. AND WHO REALLY GIVES A FUCK IF HE GREW HIS HAIR OUT. ANd also I'm piss at everyone saying its bad they experimented. Art is actually coming back into music. BE HAPPY!
BogusManFilms 2 years ago 4
if it was all about lyrical content, than he should write a book and upload the audio chapters, lol. i know that brooklyn skater herb would ipod that shit asap to 50-50 grind to
serge809 2 years ago
Hes and MC not an author. And I know this is a dumb thing to argue about be honestly, what better way to pass a message than through music? The lyrics of E&A are very thought out unlike alot of lyrics this radio bullshit and most rappers can come up with. Thats why I respect the album and other E&A music. I honestly dont like hip hop music but this is... different. Its very thought out. And maybe they did experiment but it just goes to show that music is changing for the better.
BogusManFilms 2 years ago
Just because its different an experimental doesnt make it brilliant and great.
I cant hate on Eyedea as a lyracist but this is unlistinable to me.
zfortyounce 2 years ago
Its a little weird but I like it. Still got the funkyfresh talent of E&A behind it.
misterpickles530 2 years ago
they made this type of album to spit in the face of close-minded fucks like yourself.
BadeSamurai 2 years ago
This is one of gthe few hip hop albums that I actually like all the way through. I dont see anything wrong with this album. Or his singing, he has a good tone, just kind of off key, but I dont think hes really trying anyway. But this is probably my least favorite song on the album. Its in no way emo. And so what if he grew his hair out. He's just doing his own thing, and he looks alot less goofy with it long. And either way, hes still an impressive lyrical rapper.
BogusManFilms 2 years ago
lmao the hook is hilarious...but the allegory in this song...sheesh!! :)
truemc07 2 years ago
no man this just sucks horridly. wtf happened to eyedea.
suddenly hes on some emo-cage shit except cage sucks with shia lebouf and eyedea is sucking on some blink 182 shit. im surprised travis barker didnt do the drumwork.
serge809 2 years ago
Like, how ignorant can you be?
Eyedea and Abilities are taking creative choices that will hopefully further the music industry and art in general. They decided to do something diverse and, in my opinion, brilliant. Note that I said "my opinion". It is YOUR opinion that this sucks...but just know that they made this type of album to spit in the face of close-minded fucks like yourself.
bklynskating 2 years ago 4
That was directed towards serge809, by the way.
I just don't see how anyone can overlook the lyrical mastery in this album even if you feel like it's some "emo-cage sucking on some blink 182 shit" as my buddy 3 posts down so immaturely put it.
bklynskating 2 years ago
yeah eyedea squealing like a starved pig is musical brilliance.
god just stfu and admit the song sucks. it wasnt shitting on eyedea in general, im probably im a bigger follower than your backpacking artfaggot ass is. hence my total dissapointment and "WTF" reaction towards this crap.
forward music my ass, they experimented and it sucked. get over it and yourself.
serge809 2 years ago
lol@it just being opinion. its not relative to interpretation or subjective to thought, it just sucks and the only audience it caters to are the yesmen that think this self indulging crap is even remotely capable of having ANY replay value unless its to show your friends how badly nerd rap keeps evolving.
serge809 2 years ago
lol@the butthurt audience that can listen to this without smirking or busting out in complete laughter when you compare it the reason you became an idea fan int he first place. this is comparable to a really really bad linkin park song. it sucks and so does the musical taste of whoever cosigns it.
serge809 2 years ago
lol@you, fucking loser. if anyone agrees with fag809, can you honestly tell me that that was an intelligent rebuttal?
you're just a fucking ignorant piece of shit, it's all good...
bklynskating 2 years ago
well put. i rest my case. this subpar crap remains in circulation and keeps the artists from REALLY achieving their full potential because yesman like yourself egg it on. good job, moron. youre the likes of which kept dose one around for so damn long, if you even know who he is.

you're embarrassing yourself, stop.

50 cent an lil Wayne have no idea what real music is....

a living legend.
sflask310 2 years ago
hm, didn't know eyedea grew out his hair, looks kinda more alternative now. And he really shouldn't be singing the hook for that song...
but seriously, its one of the dopest albums I've heard in a while...
iKickRocksYo 2 years ago
love the new lp. although the choruses annoy me . eyedea cant sing for shit. fucking loving the direction of the beats and the lyrics. one of the sickest teams ever. hoping of more like this, but hold back on the crooning bro.
philipdoom 2 years ago 2
Love this album. Honestly wasn't the biggest Eyedea & Abilities fan until this album. God forbid and artist grow, and try something new.
DewFlock 2 years ago
not a big fan of the new album. their old stuff, dope but fuck what have they done? especially when he tries to sing, fuck its almost embarrasing. the rhymes however havent changed, still as good as ever, but with the new look and sound. not digging it as much
James87crosby87 2 years ago
this shit just drives me fuckin nuts... ask me 2 months ago and and E&A is basicly my shit... both records and oliver hart are fucking crazy... but man... i listen to fuckin hip hop.. and yes.. cut your fucking hair and buy some bigger jeans.. i grew up in the day and age you got beat up for lookin like that... i cant believe what the hiphop scene is becoming... im the reason little wayne is popular you better get your story strait brother... freedom of expression is one thing. this shits gay.
nicname00 2 years ago
so you judge artists by how they dress and not their music? Also, do you only listen to hiphop? Are you too proud to admit that other genres can make great music (eg, Queen)? It's "music snobs" like you that keep outsiders and people from different backgrounds away from good hiphop music.
headsofhiphop 2 years ago 2
i doesn't matter the way they dress, all that matters is if their music is good.
i don't listen to a lot of hiphop, but these guys suck.

was never a big fan. but just bought the new cd and its AMAZING.

Eyedea's new look reminds me of a mix of jim carrey and a "hardcore" skater kid. Don't matter though, that new steez is fire.

People are overreacting, this is some pretty good stuff. The only thing bad about this is his attempt at singing.
SwizzRazr 2 years ago
Agreed! Eyedea & Abilities have always put out good shizz! Can't wait to see them in Aug 16th.

thank you nozzzzzy
what the hell is wrong with you people
"cut your hair".. cut your fucking wrists.
eyenine 2 years ago 4
"buy some bigger jeans, get a fuckin haircut, and make some good ol hiphop music"
Are you serious? What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Music is an art form expressed the way the artist wants to express it and Eyedea and Abilities do an amazing job of this every single time.
I'm sure the size of his pants and the length of his hair has nothing to do with it, idiot.
nozzzzy 2 years ago 5
cut your hair? really? that really matters when it comes to music?
you people are the reason why music like Lil Wayne is popular
i will agree he sings the chorus 100 times better on the actual album than this video though

This is probably the best song on the album, and that is saying a lot. I was expecting something different for sure, but this kind of different is too much. I'll try to give it a chance, but man, I would die for some old E and A. I am hoping he makes more music and kinda mixes everything back together into something solid. I am hoping the style of this album was just something he wanted to get off of his chest hahah.

it must be nice to be cage or eydea. i bet if kweli, lif, vast aire, myka 9, aceyalone, etc etc tried this route, people would call them sell outs and would accept it for one second. must be nice...
but honestly, most hip-hop is redundant. from the 50 cents to the commons.
right now...antipop consortium, thavius beck, k-the-i???, subtlte, jel, alias, buck 65, subtle, daedelus, prefuse, busdriver are pretty much the only people pushing hip-hop forward
sucramnipp 2 years ago
A good album, but Eyedea is trying a little too
hard to be hip-hop's Kurt Cobain...
bigge525 2 years ago
Well, at least he's doing more rapping than Cage did on his new album...
The Thom Yorke style singing is a little off putting though.

what the fuck?! i been waiting for a new E&A albulm for way to long... and this is it? what the fuck?! take off that little hipster sweater, buy some bigger jeans, get a fuckin haircut, and make some good ol hiphop music... what the fuck?!

In the unlikely event Eyedea actually reads this...DO AN ALBUM WITH KRISTOFF KRANE! The two of you compliment each other so well....Thats all...
SugarFreeRecordsUK 2 years ago 2
While this isn't an album created to impress hip hop purists who only love as
feldm4n put it "typical kick kick snare and insert punchline here...". It is one of the purest artistic hip hop albums I've heard in years. Each track has a depth that is not common in not only mainstream but much of underground hip hop. This is certainly my favorite new album in a while.
GoldLemons 2 years ago 2
i agree with you totally. this is one of my favorite songs on the album
