a perfectly good music line so ingrained that you automatically think of it when you hear "star wars" for some piece of crap that ruins the music plots, i mean who were the music directors for the original three? Monkeys?
powers flying everywhere and entire armies of clones and droids blasting at each other, and that just takes the glory away from the jedi, in centurion war movies like "the eagle", "300", and the like this is ok and actually reccomended, but in star wars it just makes it more difficult to figure out what the hell is going on. See what i mean? In addition, what the hell happened to the music? They had perfectly good music for the original trilogy but for the prequels they just decide to screw
this is what i call the "lois" theme after the black guy from the first left 4 dead we all know and love in the sense of that he's the average man trying to get by thrust into something far greater than what he thought he would end with, the same is true of han, chewie, leia and everyone else who uses blasters in the movie, now don't get me wrong it's cool to see a lightsaber fight every few times as evidenced by knights of the old republic, but in the prequels it's too much, there's force
"again this is turned into this whole sci-fi fantasy thin"
*obi-wan-kenobi from episode 2 shows up*
"ooooh god!"
firstly: F****** HILARIOUS!
secondly: agreed, the prequels are not NEARLY as good as the original movies, i mean in the older movies there are awesome aliens, more convincing enemies and better music in addition to the fact of there are only four-three-two-and then finally one force users in the movie, and everyone else uses blasters,
to put it bluntly ivan's electro-whips are kindof a more primitive rip-off of a special form of lightsaber called "the lightwhip"-as i am not going to explain what the lightwhip is because the name is kinda self-explanitory unless you are the densest of individuals-the relation between the lightwhip and ivan's electro-whips is actually able to be seen in the cuts from his attacks, as it leaves a burning, smoking, glowing hole wherever the whips hit, see what i mean?
It sounds like you don't like comic book films that are actually comic book-ish. Thats fine, but its totally subjective. Tony Stark changing his suit in this film makes sense since in the comics he goes through various versions of the Iron Man armor throughout the years. So you complaining about the change in suit in invalid.
Sure, Iron Man 2 is no "The Dark Knight" in terms of comic book film sequels, but its a solid film nonetheless and entertaining enough.
Great stuff, Ryan. Couldn't agree more; I LOVED Iron Man, having no prior knowledge of the Comic series, and I was really looking forward to Iron Man 2, and though I enjoyed it, it definitely did not live up to near the quality Iron Man displayed, due to most of what you have pointed out.
I'm afraid Iron Man 3, if it ever comes out which I'm pretty $ure it will, will follow this trend into the ground and be nothing like the original. Ah, well.
@starwarsvideos Considering the Iron Man series is being done by Marvel Studios I wouldn't worry too much about Iron Man 3 being a simple cash in film. It appears that Marvel Studios, up to this point, has done a superior job at adapting their own properties as opposed to Sony who did the Spider-Man series or the studios that handled X-Men, Daredevil, and The Punisher. Marvel Studios actually cares about the properties.
@GoongalaGoongala I'm not sure, we'll just have to wait and see. My biggest problem with Iron Man 2 (and will undoubtedly continue in Iron Man 3) is the mixing of different series. I know nothing of the Avengers, nor am I as interested in them. I enjoy Iron Man as Iron Man. Now I'm not defending Sony here, but at least the Spider-Man series kept to itself. But I really don't want them to keep mixing the two (Avengers & Iron Man) together -- keep them separate. It worked wonders in the original.
i agree with a lot of your points in this review, but the thing i hated most about this film is how Justin Hammer seems like a whiny little kid. either that or he's trying to be cool and making himself sound stupid , like when he reveals the drones at the expo or when the "he can't put his head in there, it's a helmet that's a head." scene. every time Justin pops up on screen i just wanna pause and go to a better scene...like something from the first movie.
I admit, the second wasn't as good as the first. I blame it on them not wanting too much to happen before the Avengers movie... it was a fluff piece, but a good fluff piece.
And honestly, I think what the review shows is that you like specific superhero archtypes, but not others... which is fine. You probably didn't like Thor because that movie was VERY comic bookish, and you probably liked most of Captain America except for the cosmic cube reference. Still a good opinion piece.
@quiotu A lot of this review sounds like nitpicking. That being said, of course Iron Man 2 wasn't as good as the first. When the first film came out there really weren't any expectations and as a result the film sorta wowed. But with the first film being so successful, the second was doomed because of the expectations. Stuff rarely ever lives up to the hype.

Yeah I agree, this defenitly wasent as good as the first. Another thing I particuarly didnt like about it was they didnt have the theme song from the first one (driving with the top down) in this one. That alone would have made it much better
To me, all the half dozen plot lines in this movie were individually good, but the movie tries to divide itself between all of them, so they all come across as phoned in. If the movie just focused on 1 or 2 of them, never mind which, it would have been spectacular.
Good job Ryan. My only criticism is that you reveal a little too much detail about the plot which makes this review good for someone who has already seen the movie but too many spoilers for those who haven't.
@kuunami I made it a full year after after the movie came out. This isn't a "should I go and see it?" kind of review, it's a dissection, where I want to go into all the details, assuming that you have seen the film before watching this review. Also, that's why I have a graphic at the beginning that says SPOILER ALERT on it.
I absolutely agreed with every issue you raised in this review; it is nothing more than an extended trailer for the Avengers, which I had to watch over and over again (I work at a movie theatre).
One thing I really didn't like was the recasting of Rhodes. I liked the character who played him in the first one, but then in this one they had a different actor and a different personality of him.
I'll agree with you that Iron Man 2 was not a good as Iron Man 1, but that was a tough act to follow. There's no way they could have matched the same level of charm, action, drama, and delicate humor the second time around. It just couldn't be done, but they sure tried.
@TheAtomicBlog Yeeaahhhh, Thor is just kinda meh. It's not terrible, or great. I don't have a ton to say about it. I have to say that the Russian Government wouldn't have wanted the Arc Reactor back then, because it was practically, and essentially, useless before Tony came to realize how it could be used to power a suit such as his. So now that it was revealed to be able to do so much, it's sought after. Anyway, great review.
You rival Mr. Plinkett, good sir. A lot of the things you point out in this review are applicable to Captain America and how it too is invaded by the Avengers story. Great points by a great filmmaker.
I agree with you 100% Ryan. While I enjoyed seeing the characters I'd read about in the comics, deep down I could feel the producers of this film eroding away at the soul potential of the movie. They got names wrong, they had to get a new guy to play Rhodey and they went with the LAST choice anyone would go with for the villain!
I am so glad that someone else felt the same way about this movie that I did. I thought I was the only person in the freaking universe that thought this movie wasn't as good as the first. Everything just seemed so disconnected and convoluted that I really felt it didn't do justice to the first Iron Man. I agree with pretty much everything you said, Ryan. I can only hope that Marvel wises up for Iron Man III.
32 minutes on a 125 minute movie. Wow. This isn't a review; it's a vivisection. I agree with pretty much all of it, especially the ridiculous universe they pulled this movie into compared to the first. I keep hoping that one day Hollywood will figure out "bigger" isn't always better when it comes to sequels.
Honestly that was the best reveiw of the movie yet. Honest. This was kool, this wasn't. informative. Movie one had and did this, movie two didn't. Object, I'm not saying this, but that. Overall very fair.
My only critism I have with your reveiw is that you seem not to appriciate the good action seens. Everything else aside, there were some really good action scens. Yes, it dosen't mae up for the movie, but it almost seems like you got a hard-on to hate the action in this movie.
Also. I will agree that there to much Avengers lead up. But simply because there was to much of it does not make all of it bad. The fact that Tony uses a sheild prototype as a prop for his machine was classic. The Thor bit, was nothing more than making fan-boys squeel to there fan-boy-friends about "OMG did you see it, it was there".
wow man, just loved it, you carefully laid out your thoughts and systematically laid them out for us to analyze. You definately had some great points and also did it in humorous way. I hop to see stuff like this in the future =)
Hey Ryan, I've been a fan of yours since you made the first RVD, so the release of RVB 2 and this review made my day. Your Iron Man 2 analysis is spot on and I like that your style of humor is pretty much in vein of RedLetterMedia's except the whole, y'know, psycho-mumbling thing. I'd be stoked if you made more movie reviews, even older ones such as the Batman movies. Keep up the good work! =)
You're right, I think they got so caught up forcing shit into the movie trying to sell you on the Avengers that they mostly forgot this was an Iron Man movie, and it suffered for it. But do you know what I really got out of this entire 32 minute, funny as hell and well thought out review? I wanna go watch Gladiator. Thank You, Sir.
Nice job. Do you plan on reviewing more movies? If so, would you review the Star Wars Saga. (Or review the one you like the most.) I'd love to hear your Pros/Cons and how much they influenced you as a filmmaker.
@khdude2000 Pretty hard to argue with. The prequels really are disasters, except when it comes to the technical aspects that were always what captivated me about them: The visual effects, the sound, the art design. So I will always appreciate them on that level, and in a weird way, always love those aspects of them, even though the older I get, the more I agree with RLM.
I love all your amazing work Ryan, you are incredibly talented. Not only can you choreograph superb light saber battles and do the rotoscoping effects, you have fantastic delivery in your voice in this video, oh and also you are a SUPERB camera operator, the rotating camera rig for RVB2 was Genius! No doubt these are just pet peeves u have with the Iron-man2, I totally get where your coming from, very eloquently delivered :) Ironman 1 is fantastic, part 2 is great fun, its no Dark knight though
I never watched this movie because I knew it would be bad. After watching your review, I actually want to watch it because I'm a huge MST3K fan and I like watching horrible movies... Like Jumper:)
While I agree that Iron Man is a better film in general, I think you've got some heavily rose colored glasses on in regards to Iron Man being more realistic than 2, or even more grounded in reality. I could start a list, but throughout the film they reject any sort of reality in favor of fun. Just think about how many times Tony should have died from falling. Or a robot that acts like a dog.
@firestorm26621 My criticism at the reality isn't so much aimed at the technical details (though I think it still applies) but more at the general approach of the films. The first is a movie about people in our real world. The second is a live-action cartoon. To me, if there never was an Iron Man 1, then Iron Man 2 wouldn't be a problem. It disregards the realism of both the real world AND the first movie.
Impressive. I would have to agree on all of that. It was a good movie at face value, but when you really look at it... BTW the interactive holograms, in the first on not the second :P, are becoming possible. Japanese scientists just developed touchable holograms. So theoretically it could be possible.
I hate the introduction of other super heroes... I just like Iron Man and Tony Stark... the intro of other heroes and people using his suit... it didn't even make sense. There was an ark reactor in the suit Roady took. Super lame
wow, u r verry funny , there were lots of very funny parts i wont put times down for them , but things like comic book fans wanking maturiel and loads of cgi bullshit etc
Amazing analysis dude. I like to think I'm pretty sharp on these things, but a lot of this stuff you pointed out never occurred to me. Maybe it's because I have a huge boner for the Avengers.
One of the things that failed in this movie for me was the whole Palladium core thing because it was so obviously meant to parallel the comic Tony and his fight with booze, breakdown into self destructive behavior and rehabilitation(another reason why Downy was a great choice for the role; because he's basically the same person) for what ever reason they avoided exploring that. I have to think a lot of the problem is interference from marvel which explains Favreux's refusal to do Ironman3.
Excellent review, dude. You've managed to crystalize a lot of the things that were bothering me but I just couldn't put into words. Please don't hesitate to break down another movie if it strikes your fancy.
Probably the simplest way to critique this movie is the problem with every sequel: It lacked the element of discovery.
Despite what executives may think, all great movies have a learning curve. You learn about the characters and their problems as opposed to being spoon-fed them via exposition.
My biggest beef?: it was the SAME movie as the first one. He develops a health issue, builds a new tech to combat it, then fights a big robot. He always has to fight robots bc he's Iron Man?
You're very persuasive, Ryan. This made me not want to see this movie again. I didn't remember much from it because I fell alseep. I guess that's how bad it was. Haha.
Once again Ryan shows the ability to not only make flashy lightsabers and cut scenes in a cool way but that he actually thinks about stuff and cares. Dude I could not agree more with you. Thank you so very much for this. Made my Day.
Part of what makes them "superheroes" though is just that. They can do things normal people can't. As for the cameos, thats just how it is. Superheroes are constantly showing up in other superheroes lives, particularly in the comics. Fury and Stark are constantly interacting, it's only natural he'd show up sooner or later. Rest of the stuff I agree with though. The plot was too confusing.
@RyanWieber That's what I gathered. Thats what I thought of Spiderman 3 as well. I never cared much for Iron-Man and how they did this movie didn't help him in my eyes at all. Sounded like it had a lot of technical/scientific inconsistencies too from what I gathered. But you're the pro at that; I never would have noticed.
@RyanWieber Hey Ryan you may know me, but that doesnt matter, so the scene at around 12:00 mins you talk about how the structure of the facility looks like a prefectly shaped sphere, well maybe howard built it knowing that his son would find a new technology in the future that would change the world, and so forth would help him create a new elemnt in order to keep his invention working, because as quoting from tony he was a verysmart man in his time maybe too smart, something to think about. ;)
@sullivan556 That was clearly the idea they were going for, but my contention is that the layout of the Stark Expo appears to have nothing to do with the configuration of the new element.
Hey Ryan! this review was just so awesome! and i think i have the same opinion as you! this movie was a let down.. however i like Whiplash's electric whip weapons!! :D Oh yeah and the way you pointed out all the key things which made no sense.. such as how Tony created the "new element" - just made me laugh out loud!! literally! the people next door will think i'm crazy!
i liked the special effects + fight scenes of IM2 and your review is just so awesome! great job!
I really liked that you mixed an excellent thoughtful review about the film's flaws with a great sense of humor. I laughed and learned a lot at the same time.
I loved your review and laughed at a lot of your points. I agree 100% with what your saying. Make sure you put a spoiler alert though for people that haven't seen it.
I agree in all respects -- though, to be fair, I feel as if IM2 was just trying to ride on the success-train generated by IM... Technology-wise, there is barely any real continuity between the ARC reactors of IM and IM2, which makes no sense -- unless, for some reason, Tony had to upgrade his all-of-a-sudden. Even so, considering what that cost him in IM, I'd think Tony would know better than to have extra / old ARC reactors lying around nearby...
I agree with all of your criticisms, except for one. The idea that Marvel is creating an entire universe in which all these characters and movies exist at the same time is ambitious and makes me look forward to seeing the heroes interact. I do agree that this film could have been much more subtle in its approach to setting up the Avengers.
A fantastic in-depth review, sir. I too felt like there was some kind of void after I left the theater. I tried convincing myself that I really liked it due to that I liked the first one. So, how could I not like the second? I failed at being a fanboy.
Aaaaaawsome review Ryan. Listening to your wise knowledge about what a good film is make me want to see more shorts directed&written by you. You are best known for creating amazing vfxs but I'm sure you are a great storyteller that can tell a good story without using them.
@LowBudgetProdutions Thanks! I have no current plans to do any others. I just had a lot to say about this one that I thought would make a funny video.
I really thought this film sucked balls. You have both the main protagonist and antagonist sitting on ass for over half the film. This film had so much potential to be something huge. I really could have been like the dark knight were it was an idea driven film with many possibilities at large. Thanks Ryan for your views!
I loved how you used, some of the music from the social network. Thats great stuff right there! (:

JollyRogersProd 7 months ago
32 minutes on a 125 minute movie. Wow. This isn't a review; it's a vivisection. I agree with pretty much all of it, especially the ridiculous universe they pulled this movie into compared to the first. I keep hoping that one day Hollywood will figure out "bigger" isn't always better when it comes to sequels.
Can't wait to see if you do any more of these.
pmccli 8 months ago

The Thor bit, was nothing more than making fan-boys squeel to there fan-boy-friends about "OMG did you see it, it was there".
numnuts16 8 months ago
wow man, just loved it, you carefully laid out your thoughts and systematically laid them out for us to analyze.

@RyanWieber Do you agree with them? I would love to know your opinion on the prequels. RLM tears all three films a new one.
khdude2000 3 months ago

No doubt these are just pet peeves u have with the Iron-man2, I totally get where your coming from, very eloquently delivered :) Ironman 1 is fantastic, part 2 is great fun, its no Dark knight though

simp1ejack 9 months ago
That made my day. I heartily agree with your opinions.
LittlekeithTFN 9 months ago
While I agree that Iron Man is a better film in general, I think you've got some heavily rose colored glasses on in regards to Iron Man being more realistic than 2, or even more grounded in reality. I could start a list, but throughout the film they reject any sort of reality in favor of fun. Just think about how many times Tony should have died from falling. Or a robot that acts like a dog.
firestorm26621 9 months ago
@firestorm26621 My criticism at the reality isn't so much aimed at the technical details (though I think it still applies) but more at the general approach of the films. The first is a movie about people in our real world. The second is a live-action cartoon. To me, if there never was an Iron Man 1, then Iron Man 2 wouldn't be a problem. It disregards the realism of both the real world AND the first movie.
RyanWieber 9 months ago
Impressive. I would have to agree on all of that. It was a good movie at face value, but when you really look at it... BTW the interactive holograms, in the first on not the second :P, are becoming possible. Japanese scientists just developed touchable holograms. So theoretically it could be possible.

Amazing analysis dude. I like to think I'm pretty sharp on these things, but a lot of this stuff you pointed out never occurred to me. Maybe it's because I have a huge boner for the Avengers.
KnightofDuroch 10 months ago 2
One of the things that failed in this movie for me was the whole Palladium core thing because it was so obviously meant to parallel the comic Tony and his fight with booze, breakdown into self destructive behavior and rehabilitation(another reason why Downy was a great choice for the role; because he's basically the same person) for what ever reason they avoided exploring that. I have to think a lot of the problem is interference from marvel which explains Favreux's refusal to do Ironman3.
TheRealAlpha2 10 months ago
Excellent review, dude. You've managed to crystalize a lot of the things that were bothering me but I just couldn't put into words. Please don't hesitate to break down another movie if it strikes your fancy.
Jordacar 10 months ago
Probably the simplest way to critique this movie is the problem with every sequel: It lacked the element of discovery.
Despite what executives may think, all great movies have a learning curve. You learn about the characters and their problems as opposed to being spoon-fed them via exposition.
My biggest beef?: it was the SAME movie as the first one. He develops a health issue, builds a new tech to combat it, then fights a big robot. He always has to fight robots bc he's Iron Man?
Lame.

DaysOfRain9109 10 months ago
@DaysOfRain9109 I don't dislike the idea of it, I dislike their execution.
RyanWieber 10 months ago 2
@RyanWieber That's what I gathered. Thats what I thought of Spiderman 3 as well. I never cared much for Iron-Man and how they did this movie didn't help him in my eyes at all. Sounded like it had a lot of technical/scientific inconsistencies too from what I gathered. But you're the pro at that; I never would have noticed.
DaysOfRain9109 10 months ago
@RyanWieber Hey Ryan you may know me, but that doesnt matter, so the scene at around 12:00 mins you talk about how the structure of the facility looks like a prefectly shaped sphere, well maybe howard built it knowing that his son would find a new technology in the future that would change the world, and so forth would help him create a new elemnt in order to keep his invention working, because as quoting from tony he was a verysmart man in his time maybe too smart, something to think about. ;)
sullivan556 10 months ago
@sullivan556 That was clearly the idea they were going for, but my contention is that the layout of the Stark Expo appears to have nothing to do with the configuration of the new element.
RyanWieber 9 months ago
Hey Ryan! this review was just so awesome! and i think i have the same opinion as you! this movie was a let down.. however i like Whiplash's electric whip weapons!! :D Oh yeah and the way you pointed out all the key things which made no sense.. such as how Tony created the "new element" - just made me laugh out loud!! literally! the people next door will think i'm crazy!
i liked the special effects + fight scenes of IM2 and your review is just so awesome! great job!

TheAtomicBlog 10 months ago

I really thought this film sucked balls. You have both the main protagonist and antagonist sitting on ass for over half the film. This film had so much potential to be something huge.
