I used to live about 50 yards from a place that used to exist called Tasty Donuts at the corner of Prytania and Louisiana in New Orleans. Earl hung there practically 24/7 for years. Earl had a close friend named Issac Bolden that was a producer and local music business character who was his 24/7 running partner. I think the only time Earl wasn't either at Tasty Donuts or with Issac or both was when he was asleep.
@hassledguy That was Earl's office. He used to get calls on the pay phone and everything. I live 2 blocks from there now. Though the Tastee is of course long gone. 'Dose Days' as Ronnie LaMarque would say.
This band also features Herman "Roscoe" Ernest III on drums. We lost our Brother earlier this year. He played in Mac Rebennack's band for decades. Earl King is my hero. The finest New Orleans R & B songwriter ever. Of course, Slim inspired him. Earl called Slim "the Devil, himself". Check out David Kunian's documentary of Earl.
SRV & YV would frequent Antones, in Austin and learn from greats like Earl, BB,Freddy King, Albert KIng and locals like bass-guitar WC Clark..I used to go see them in the 70's 80's..great shows..
Interesting reading a few of these comments. Somewhere along the line "blues" guitar got hijacked by a lot of well meaning white folks. The blues isn't rock and rock isn't the blues. To put it into modernish terms maybe the difference between Jimmie Vaughan and his brother? Earl king is the stuff ...
Agreed ! Blues is a very often misused term yet to some Jazz is Dixieland and it really was but hte term Jazz is now very broad. Blues branched into R& B then Rock and Roll Rock is one logical extension of early R & B yet there is another term hijacked. What they call R & B today is ....Just what is that? Even this real blues is well evolved from original Delta acoustic blues. I'd call this Chicago Blues even it this guy was from Philadelphia.
I would disagree.... If you have listened to much blues of his era, it is stylistically pretty typical. That is part of the difference between blues and rock.
stylistically sloppy? lol jimmy page was sloppy... but he made up for it by banging great tunes and experimenting... these guys..... uh.. same ole.. blues.. and they cant do it right... dont get me wrong.. i love blues.. but i guess this guy isnt my type,..
I would much rather listen to chris cain or sean costello, than earl king, I wouldn't say he is my type either. However I do like the idea of some of those old guys who never got into the virtuosity. Its got a raunchy appeal to me on some strange level.
You know, I don't like Ricky Martin and you would never see me commenting on a ricky youtube video, because i wouldn't be watching one. Earl is the blues and Jimmy Page sucks, you wont see me commenting on a Jimmy page video either, cause i wouldn't be watching one, back click out of it, but stick your stupid comments elsewhere. Aerosmith sucks too,

great atmosphere and great singing... but i have to be honest here... the solo isnt the greatest.... sloppy.... and nothing interesting.. listen to stevie ray vaughans version.. .now thats a guitar solo
Stevie Ray Vaughan had a great blues just like Earl
King. Blues about your soul and EARL KING and SRV had different souls and because that a different blues playing, so SRV cant improvise just like EARL KING, and EARL KING cant play just like SRV. Thats because SRV calls ALBERT KING the great guitarrist in the world, because he cant play just like he and cant play just like BB KING or T-bone Walker and vice-versa.
yea everyone has their own style... but the solo was sloppy.... u can hear it... his style to sloppy???? hmmmmm. i could make mistakes and say "oh its my style man" ... nah...
I got your point, "stevie and earl went to see Albert and T-bone was there, stevie and earl sold something to BB and Albert played a great guitar,,, Got it!!!!!

That is one fabulous stanky tone. I'd rather listen to this than 1,000 squinchyfaced note merchants. Earl is straight-up the Man.

too bad that earl king isn't always credited as one of the four kings of blues, they usually leave him out and just say there are 3.
