  • I like this. You keep the video simple enough for kids to understand, yet you don't patronize them with bright colors and baby talk.

  • MY BRAIN IT HURTS TO MUCH MATH IM ANGER NOW

  • 7:43 mins for addition. leik ae b0ss

  • Why am i still here?

  • LIES! ALL LIES!

  • This video is most popular with:

    Gender Age

    Male 35-44

    Male 45-54

    Female 45-54

  • @aenkmnp Teaching their kids. It's not like 6 year olds watch these kinds of videos.

  • @aenkmnp its cuz some parents show these videos to their kids

  • @singhinderjit95

no it's more likely they think it might be a joke

  • Well I don't want to give you any avocado's !

  • He sounds like Anthony Bourdain from the Travel Channel.

  • it's hilarious ... lol

tomorrow i have final exam of calculus

  • ITS TOOOOOO HARD!!!!!!

  • You should make the next video Integration

  • still dont understand .. :D

  • I love how Mr. Khan is all into avocados.

  • Sal your way better than my prof!! He can't explain it as well as you can.

  • OMG! this was so Easy. :D

  • Wow. So this is how Supermarkets inventory their avocados. I always assumed they used some form of witchcraft. I was right.

  • If it weren't for pioneers like Sal, no one would ever know how many avocados they had.

  • Sal, addition doesn't seem basic to me. I think I'll start with Algebra 2 material.

  • damn this is hard

  • 2:58 if you increase 3 by 1, then 2, then 3, then 4, you end up with 13, not 7.

  • Dude?!!!!wtf

  • @TheMikaela1992 What? He is explaining the most basic of addition. It may seem stupid, but it is one of the most important foundations of maths. Anyway Salman Khan does everything, chain rule, history, science, computer science. The whole spectrum.

This is the most knowledgeable man on the planet!!

  • @IKillerPieI relax, i freakin love sal, I'm on his sit almost everyday,, it's just i watched this and the one before expecting something challenging cuz i wanted to study algebra, and "these vids" really did not help "me".

  • Try the Foundups.TV - Juiced up Anno Mashup. Check out our Math Playlist.

  • How do you record this and put it on youtube. I want to do this for my class of second graders.

  • I'm sorry sal, but I couldn't wait...I ate your avocados while you where counting them.

  • 1+1= window

  • Why did I watch this entire video.

  • This is base 10. Have some love to other bases :D

    Good teaching, anyway.

  • Thank you! My little one likes this!

  • you're wrong. 3 avocado's + 4 avocado's = 0 avocado's & 1 stomach ache.

  • My 1st grade son, watches this. Now he understands and is loving math... and avocados, too! Thanks for making time to make this very useful videos.

  • why does 1 + 1 = 2 and not 11?

    IT'S BECAUSE OF THE MEDIA!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I want avocado's now. This make me hungry.

  • It is dumb

  • i don't get it...

  • make some real vids no=life

  • @nick10409 u suck troll

  • @nick10409

Because obviously somebody that has been recognized by Bill Gates must have no life.

  • ur vids suck

  • @nick10409 U SUCK IN EVERYTHING

  • well...

  • LOL.

  • BUT WHAT IF I BITE ONE OF THE AVOCADOES AND POUR SUGAR ALL OVER IT???

  • @wifiaccount1 If you do that than u need to go to the subtraction page! And for the sugar part u need to go to the algebra page !!!

  • even though im 23 and know this from the back of my head, i stilll wanted to see it just to see how you would teach it!!! awesomeee

  • CAN NOT COMPUTE

  • wait khan i gotta question.

who was on the phone and what was it about?

  • i already know this but i watched this CAUSE I FELT LIKE IT.and this one was kinda funny.

  • Hardest one of your videos

  • @rickstir10 yep

  • So complicated.

  • I watched this not to learn addition but because I love Sal. :)

  • I don't think I can comprehend this ;(

  • great video. went over it with my 4 year old and she picked it up really fast,as soon as you explained the number line.

  • I am an adult with a learning disability. I am so thankful that these basic mathematics videos have been made. It may seem like "omg teh easiet thing evr," but not to everyone. Thank you so much for these videos! (And thanks to Stephen Colbert for the promo!)

  • i don't get it D:

  • Wouldn't it be so much simpler if instead of avocados he just used something like patients with pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. Isn't it easier that way?

  • wow, this video is perfect to fall asleep to! it makes me feel smart and his voice is so soothing

  • I just realized these problems were hard for me some 17 years ago... now it's the easiest thing i know in maths... i hope in some 17 years in the future i can be a pro at differential equations and multiple integrals.. life is beautiful when you are always learning :)

  • OH MY GOD! YES! FINALLY I CAN SOLVE ALL MY PROBLEMS NOW. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO.

  • I would like to see someone start with this video and then go all the way to multivariable calculus. That would be the greatest accomplishment of the Khan Academy yet.

  • Sal goes "1 + 1" and I was like oh, that's a good and easy pace to start.

Then he goes "Lets call that an Avocado" and I went, what in the world is an Avocado???? I don't remember addition bring this difficult!!

Haha, I joke... but seriously? Avocados?

  • This is actually really cute. I don't mean that in a condescending way at all.

  • Audiences

    Male 45-54

    Male 35-44

I'm sure there's an explanation for this.

  • @Epitzsche Parents.

  • @Epitzsche parents are playing it for their kids...

  • @Epitzsche And there almost all american!

  • @Epitzsche I'm 17 :P Im just reviewing GENERAL ARITHMITIC...calculus HERE I COME :)

  • @Epitzsche There is. Parents are showing this to their kids.

  • @Epitzsche Either parents or rabid avocado lovers.

  • @Epitzsche I think the explanation is that the people of those ages are actually parents sitting with their children and watching this togheter with them so that their children can learn easier and ask if they still don't understand :) I think you already knew this and that your comment was a joke but I really don't get sarcasm very well xD I was curious as to how Sal was teaching basic addition, I'm a university student myself and I visit Khanacademy for intuition, he's wonderful <3

  • @Epitzsche That's probably bcoz parents let their kids watch from their accounts. There's a big problem if you see teenagers on the list. Btw I'm also looking for a video for my sister so don't think I'm here to learn too.

  • @giriisindahouse im a teen, i just wanted to see how sal managed to make a video this basic. Lol, I noticed that he is teaching really small children, but he uses really advanced words. (ie. daunting)

  • @Phatnaru0001 Hes not, Im 17 and I still have some problems with basic addition. Everyone does

  • Comment removed

  • @lizardgizzard108 If you are 17 and you don't have basic addition down (hell, if you don't have multiplication and division 4 down) then you are in trouble. I don't mean to offend, but, you are at the age that you should be doing physics, and you need at least some basic Trigonometry to take physics. This video is directed at very you school ages, like 5 year-olds. I was only saying that some of his words are a little advanced for 5 year-olds, but I'm sure that he is too used to it to stop.

  • @Epitzsche I think kids just put high age so they can watch like shooting game videos.

  • @Epitzsche Explanation: parents.

  • @Epitzsche Here's your explanation .

The schooling system (at least in Europe) has gotten so soft that third graders still cant do this ...so we the fathers ( and mothers respectivly) have to teach them our selfs.

Since most of us have no child-psychology training, we turn to khanacademy for advice ;)

  • @Epitzsche Yes it's incredibly simple: Parents show these videos to their kids.

  • @Epitzsche And I now realize several people hae said the same thing so sorry for asking a pointless comment.

  • @Epitzsche They have Kids. I am 44 with a 4 and 2 year old boys.

  • 1+1=11..... duh

  • of course i know how to add but this is really inspirational how millions of people who cant afford education are using his website to learn these things.

btw dont think hes muslim i think hes indian but why does it even matter if hes muslim or not

  • @ajgbabymeerkat muslims can be indians too. its a religion not a race

  • Got a bit worried; the CC license is Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works. Does that mean I'm not allowed to make a Norwegian translation of it? I work as a teacher in a Norwegian school, and our six-year-olds don't understand English. I want to use Khan Academy in my teaching, but the language barrier is a difficult one. I have translated this one, and I use Chrome's autotranslation to translate the site. By doing this, I will make it possible for "my" kids to use the site.

  • Guys, he's just trying to teach the world. He teaches basic addition to whatever hard stuff. This could be for kids who can't go to school. I will use khan academy until i die. When i see his face i don't think about if he's muslim or not. He's very smart and deserves a whole lot better treatment. If he was white you guys probably wouldn't complain. Mr. Khan, you rock. :)

  • I say draw a number line (and anything else you'd use more than once, including other number lines to different scales) and then laminate the paper. Then just use dry erase pens on them so you can just erase as you go to the next problem. : )

  • I paused at 0:26 and started thinking.

  • @behnamasid dum ass

  • lól_àÑYóNë_wâñNÁ_chat_wIth_me_I_fÈél_sÒ_lònElý_tÖÐAY♫

  • I came here from your differential equations videos... You make Laplace transform seem this easy... Amazing!

  • @AymanRSaleh hahaha! I came here from the video on exact differential equations, and I had put the video on Laplace transformation on my "watch later" list. This video is absolutely beautiful because it encourages you to keep moving forward when you've seen how far you've gone, while putting you in the shoes of a small child or in the shoes of maybe someone older who never had the opportunity to learn any math.

  • this is harder than algebra!!!!

  • it's so confusing!!!!!!

  • im 16...Graduating next year.. yet im watching this video :|

    i love you Sal :D

  • Hi, how can i see all your videos in order of competancy please? thanks!

  • @apocketfulofdreams khanacademy org

  • He uses really high vocabulary for a video that is targeted to 6 year olds!!!!

  • I love how he teaches even this most basic stuff with the same enthusiasm as the higher level mathematics.

  • BUT AVOCADOS ARENT YELLOW! D=

  • Muslim people are smart ! :D

  • Comment removed

  • @UGLYRAED

Of course we are that media bullshit is something we don't need......

  • @BattleGround16

lol I know.Im a muslim as well xD

  • @UGLYRAED

    oh lol nice...

  • he does a good job at hiding how simple and strange it is to be teaching something so simple. I can tell and its hilarious, m ost people woudln't be that good at explaining it because of how simple it is.. they would just expect you to get it. whats 1 plus 1??????? welllllllll its 2.... so obviousley 250 + 151 is 401!

  • This is beautiful, I've actually used khan academy to make up for my slacking off in high school (I somehow graduated with a 0.8 GPA, even though I got a 27 on my ACT) and now I've tutored my friend in college calculus and various other classes and am currently attending CC with a 4.0, thank you for this. seriously.

  • kool avocados are awesome but STRAWBERRIES ARE BETTER

  • 1 Salman Khan + 1 Salman Khan = ?

  • @datxcod π Einsteins?

  • Wait... But how do you spell avocado? Why doesn't he go over that? That's a crucial step in the process...

  • @DJCrabCake lol

  • Very nice one

  • lol

  • I just had to laugh all throughout the video.

  • I know addition, but Sal teaches this better than any of my teachers did.

  • i wonder if there are people on youtube that don't know how to add lol

  • this is too hard for me :|

  • This is great. You are my inspiration. I am a math teacher in Norway and you inspired me to make my own to channel to make videos like you but in Norwegian.

    Thank you.

  • @weiderification That's great to hear!

  • scary how this video has the most views. I hope they're all < 5 year olds.

  • Thank you so much, I believe I have the knowledge to pass my arithmetic final!

  • IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW

  • Wow your daughter must be really smart I can't Evan do that and I'm 12 I'm serous

  • @lamagooster lol you're so dumb

  • My daughter saw me watching your calculus videos. She was interested in what I was doing, so started showing her your arithmetic videos. She is five and she can add, subtract, and multiply. When she gets to kindergarten, her teacher will be in for a surprise! Thank you Sal!

  • This is perhaps my favourite video. Going from this one to LaPlace transforms and knowing most of the intermediate steps are there just shows you what a mind-boggling contribution Sal has made to the world.

  • Mathematics always tends to simplify the world.

In the real world, you can NEVER accurately visualize what the difference between "1" and "2" is.

Because "2" means "two of the same thing" - but there can never be "two exactly same things" in this world.

Your apple simply MUST be different from my apple.

When I add up my apple with your apple, how come one can say that I have two apples?

  • @kclau1 This is math, not philosophy. If the two apples are not the same, why are they both called apples? Because their genetic makeup determines what kind of fruit they are, namely apples. If something as simple as 1+1 irks you, then you must really hate calculus, since it is all about approximation.

  • @hippiechickie18 I would assume that you have agreed with what I have said.

Believe it or not, Math IS philosophy.

Math measures only the quatity of things, not their QUALITY.

It tried to solve this problem by the system of units, but that still did not prevent it from overly simplifying the world.

Suppose you have one sour apple and one sweet apple, and suppose they weigh the same, do you REALLY think that now you have two apples?

Thinking that you do is a self-serving prophecy.

  • @kclau1 MATHS is not philosophy, it's an art and a language.

You would still have 2 apples if they were sour or not. You could look at the chemical makeup of the apples, using maths, to figure out if you had 2 edable apples or not.

Or you could just take a bite out of each...

  • @kclau1 You can visualise, and you can work it out the mass to an infinite quantity. - "In the real world, you can NEVER accurately visualize what the difference between "1" and "2" is."

What if you have two pieces of fruit? - That's two of the same thing. -

Physics is currently proving that a Photon can be at 2 locations at the same time. There you have "two exactly same things."

  • @Bvenged505 "Physics is currently proving that a Photon can be at 2 locations at the same time. There you have "two exactly same things.""

    Are you sure?

One SINGLE photon may be able to exist at 2 different places.

But does that mean there are TWO exactly same photons?

And maybe I should qualify myself - the UNDERLYING ASSUMPTIONS of mathematics are philosophical.

It assumes existence, or more accurately, existence of two or more of the SAME thing - a philosophical assumption.

  • come join a study group for this video on openstudy

  • If you want to become good at Mathematics visit my channel ( Mathmatchpoint ) In my videos I'm going to teach you Math the easy way. I'll teach you all Math topics; from the basic to the advanced topics. I promise you will become good at Math if you watch my videos and do the provided exercises. You can watch my Math videos in order by clicking on Playlists.

Math is easy if you have a good teacher.

  • I wish they would have taught it like this when I had to relearn it after my accident.

She made me memorize tables, and it took me three times longer to learn anything.

  • @vickiormindyb Damn, what happened in your accident?

  • Addition is still a black magic to me.

  • this guy is a math genius do u see how he added 3 avocados with 2 avocados and got the answer 5 avocados lol XD yo man u r a freaking mathematician

  • wow i thought this was super hard

  • thx, I'm at university studying Electrical Engineering and forgot these things , thx again

  • Light text on dark backgrounds is easier on the eyes and more stimulating than the traditional black text on white backgrounds. Check out the classrooms on any major college campus...or look at all the new software coming out...its really not that hard to understand this. However, if youre old as hell then yes i would recommend maxing out the contrast and thats where you can say ill agree that black and white is a great learning tool. But is it really learning at that point? or desperation?

  • No offence but if a person doesn't know what 1+1 is, I don't see how he could have gotten to youtube in the first place

  • @mahdiyaka His parents could have showed him the video, jackass. If you honestly thought this video was meant for anyone above kindergarten age, then you're obviously not very bright.

  • @mahdiyaka you're a pathological moron of the highest order. You dont seem to realize this is a stepwise tutorial with a diverse target and nothing like the favorites you have bookmarked

  • @donkekeli this is the reason why trolls were made, so idiots like you that clearly don't understand the term "no offence" would cancel each other, If I'm a "thological moron of the highest order", I dont want to even comprehend what you represent.

  • @mahdiyaka the of course your pre-senile dementia is beyond medication as much as the definition of the term "troll" is only actualized by people like you; your lack of bearing and obvious deviations in plain sight is telling enough. You don't hold enough rational cognizance to comprehend what I represent and so be it

  • @donkekeli see and that's what I mean, you're not actually here to prove a point, you're here to pick a internet fight with a troll, you won't find any here my friend.

If you cannot understand the meaning of "no offence" don't go to the dictionary and bring out words like "dementia" and "cognizance", learn what I said to you and respond in whatever manner you choose to, I just stated a fact, and put a little humor to it.

  • it would have been nice if i saw this is first grade.

  • 1+1= 1*10Exp00 agree??

  • 1+1= 1.000000000 agree???

  • 1+1 = 10... engineers anyone? XD

  • I don't think this is as good as the higher level tutorial videos, his language (especially the vocabulary) is, I think, too advanced for the typical age group who would benefit from this. But I guess I could see this being used by parents as a guide to how to teach their children basic arithmetic, as I don't see the point in making any video tutorial for children under the age of 8, as I simply can't see the vast majority of them having the attention span to watch any video for that long.

  • 1 + 1 is not equal to 2.. if i eat 2 avocados, i wont eat the seed and the skin plus some left over yellow flesh, then i cant say i ate 1 + 1 = 2 avocados right hehe... cant believe i watched the whole clip, thanks a lot sal, i think ur contribution to the world at large is unmatched, cuts thru all ages, geo location, and most of all thru time... :)

  • i don't get it :(

  • I wish i watched this in first grade....

  • That was one badass number line he drew. whew!

  • Lol. xP

    He's so funny!

  • People stop arging about if he is Muslim or not..this is about teaching people....people who can't afford education people who struggle......so for those who are going to take piss about him being Muslim etc I think you need to get a life.....and so what if he is Muslims at least he is nice....

  • @SWAT091 I agree. whoever is here to insult him or his culture and not learn, please leave and don't watch anymore of his videos. Sal Khan is a great man who has spent lots of time and energy to bring a wonderful thing to the world for free. He should be respected and admired

  • @SWAT091

Muslim, Christian, Atheist - What difference does it make, haha

    They're all great humans.

  • @The3nlightened0ne the ones that are, anyways

  • @SWAT091 you say "At least he is nice..." so you are encouraging equality against discrimination, yet tell that Muslims are normally not nice?

  • @Geckuno he never said that

  • @Geckuno exactly! I was thinkinig of writing the same thing. Like I read that whole comment and im like "ummmm"
