Love this song. It is one of my favorites as it tells the story of a life through the eyes of a boy and the pride instilled in his heart. Wow. It doesn't get much better. Dreams only die when you let them.
The new Queen Elizabeth is being christened today in Southampton where I live. I will hear fireworks, music, and, celebrations. I cannot see anything to celebrate. The Tyne could of had, still could have some of this British market. Our renewable projects will be slowed by lack of ships. Yet Mitsubishi wants to build them, but not over here, and EU countries, but not over here, why not a new Swan Hunters, why not!. All are more expensive than us given the same facilities, and they know it too.
There is an old saying " Every Picture Tells A Story" and that is truly the case here. In these photograph's we see the history of the working people of the North East. Proud, hardworking people who's sweat and toil helped to make this country one of the wealthiest in the world. Then we see the photo's of the rewards for all thier labour. The Jarrow Hunger March....the deserted and derelict shipyards...and now the coalmines have gone too. May the rich parasit's who who caused this hardship rot
@MrJoseppie123 We also say same"regarding Rugby..." Irish by birth ..'MUNSTER' by the grace of god!.... I worked with some many Geordies in Germany in the ....Eighties..Salt of the earth guys....Remember hearing,,, 'Blydan Races' being sung.on the works bus going to the plant in Gelnhausen.. at 6-30am inthe middle of really cold winter was massive... all the german co workers thought that they were cracked....
Hi, may I also have something to say about this song as a foreigner? This song is really killing me as also such a Chris Rea-fan. This is really such a great song that I have obtained from a great musical friend of mine from England. Here we see past and present together!! What an amazing song...
hi it brings a tear to me aswell . when you think these lads made labour and all LABOUR IS JUST FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS and us white working class have no one standing up for us thats why it is working class jobs going all the time while middel class pen pushing twats keeps theres FUCK ALL MPs
Jimmy Nail - i didn't think at the time he would ever be a good singer, then again he's brilliant. I went to see him in the Empire in Liverpool. Hey what a singer! Not a question a statement. He was fabulous, i would certainly go and see him again. The songs he picks are made for him.
Wonderfully put together. I empathize with the situation. I'm in the US and we had a great port where I am at one time that's been reduced over time. Heritage is never lost though.
i still work on the river. last week i watched ships delivering coal "into" the port of tyne dock. as i look up the river, all the cranes have gone now. most of the companies around are foreign. there are very few ships using the tyne now. yet despite of all this...i'm proud of where i live, the history, the people and the pride. as a result of bad goverment for some 30 years now, there is nothing left...
I was born & bred in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, My father & brother worked at the Vickers Armstrong Navel & Neptune Yard.I served my time at Vickers on Scotswood Road. This fantastic song & video show the heritage of the river, the Tyne is not what it used to be, but i am so proud to be apart of this
Swan's lost her last two cranes this week.... my father in law worked at Swan's and Wallsend slipway for many years. It's so sad that the skills have been lost. An island without much ability to build to make world class ships seems so short sighted.
Great song..great video makes me very proud to be a Geordie..... thanks
Born in Gateshead 1940. I was a Plater and know what Jimmy's is talking about. But I left Tyneside for a better life for my family in NZ. I've no regrets but I'm a Geordie and nothing will ever change that and I'm proud of my family. They raised me without bitterness and gave me values of self respect and hard work that meant I would never live on the dole. Edd
Betrayed by governments who did,nt give a fuk about the working communities..set out to decimate the mines and the shipyards just to get back at the unions..having put thousands out of work and ripped out the beating hearts of local communities they then have the gall to start labelling people has scroungers because they have no work..........What has been allowed to happen to the working class in these areas is criminal.
@agaichapter25 Right on the money mate. It's a bloody crying shame. I saw it coming in 1980, so I jumped ship and fetched up in Japan. Been there ever since, AND they've had recessions in the meantime. But they don't treat people like shite in the meantime. That's why they come back strongly. Unlike the UK where capital rules OK.... treat people like shite and they'll never trust you again... see what happens...
Enough to make me puke... I'm from Washington, CD (County Durham)
ANY YOU GEORDIE SEAMAN........watch this great tribute to tyneside from jimmy nail, Know or new a geodie seaman by the name of terry owens i would love to hear from him.We sailed together on a ship called the trevaylor early seventies, As a scouser i have never met a bad geordie lad in my life. Grreat song Great vid'. The days when English shipyards built ships for English shipowners. We need to rebuild the English manufacturing base. Support the FREE ENGLAND PARTY.
Not just ships for British shipowners - I visited the Maritime Museum in Tokyo Bay a few months ago. Saw a scale model of a big old steam ship made for the Emperor of Japan. Made me really proud to be British. Proud and sad at the same time.
This song always reminds me of my dad, who worked for more than 40 years in the Cork dockyard...i know its a long way from the toon but the song is in my heart.
He Thought he was the Geordie icon. Now lives in London. Made his money being the Geordie sterotype. Canny song but divnt care aboot him realy. His family's got a better actress.
In the winter of 1944 my mother spent a feezing couple of months or so as a student teacher in the Y.W.C.A. at 5 Saville Row, Newcastle upon Tyne. I love the video that goes with this fabulous song.
Great vid. Love this song since it has special intonations for me. I worked as a stevedore for nisan for 2 1/2 years working 12 hour nights loading cars on ships. Was a good laugh with the lads but being agency we were tret like shit. There was some ammount of larking about, hand-breaking micra and clasics round the decks of mother ships. Pay= hopeless, prospects=nil but The cameradery was great. Hope all the lads are doing ok where ever they are now... the shifts are probably dried up.
Reading some of the comments on this song I have to agree with many of you, the government has brought this country to its knees, but one thing they cant take from the "working man" is his pride whether your a geordie, scouse, cornishman to name but a few.
Yeah, governments ran down the shipyards, steel plants and the mines out of sheer malice. I mean, there couldn't have been any other reasons, could there?
its not the just the Tyne its from the cornish mines to clydeside its for every miner riveter welder and engineer who has been cheated and sold out by government.we shall rise again and stand proud they have taken our jobs our factories and yards but will never take our dignity.....stand together brothers and god bless you all....AEU BLUE CARD still militant still ready to fight
my grandad was a miner. hes passed away now, but anyway i was talking to my granmother about the strike and she said it completely destroyed my grandad.. as if it took his heart. he was never the same after that. im not sure why it all happened cuz im too young. but proud to be a geordie :)
successive goverments have torn your area apart but just remember what the great people of the north did for this country, people of the north stand tall, walk proud my friends your skills might still be needed yet! Regards to you all from a proud cornishman
It is a sad song. It was terrible what the governments have done to north. Generations of ship builders and miners all tore from what they knew. And cast aside. I'm Lancashire folk. But hopefully we will see glory days return.
makes you proud to be a geordie great song & pictures of the tyne shame its all gone now it was much better the way it was all the industry has gone now a lost heritage which many people will remember the good old days this is one of the greatest videos showing the tynes work force & its amazing people its great to be a proud geordie my family all worked in the tyne yards & were proud of it pity is all gone now keep it up jimmy your a true geordie
What a wonderful song, makes me so proud to be a Geordie.
A tragedy both Conservative and Labour governments have ripped the hearts out of our ship building, coal mining and steel making communities. We shall not forget.
im a geordie by birth and it makes me proud to watch this video the pictures are great and fit the song brilliantly lets hope that the river does rise again
great pics of swans its a shame it dont look like that any more. i served my time there and ive just finished there helping 2 take the cranes down was a hard job 2 do but theres no work any where thanks 2 that dutch prick and the labour government
I was over in Newcastle on Friday / Saturday past - my eldest girl having graduated from Northumbria - she took me down to the quayside - a proud people with a proud history.
A wonderful song, a real tribute to the people that made Tyneside a great place. I'm with Ron on this one, brings tears to my eyes; especially as they pull the great cranes of Swan Hunters down. Sad days mixed with Geordie pride.....
my dad who passed away a few years ago worked for the railways driving delivering school books etc with national carries, i was adoped he was 84 he watched the tyne brige getting built , this song makes me sad , i'm a 39 year old man but this bring tears to my eyes.
i see people are forgetting the composer here!! a fellow geordie mark knopfler!! if it wernt for him this song would not have been made and would not of been so good
Really wonderful video & song. Although a Midlander we have empathy with you as the Bastards closed your Docks & our Steel Works, Engineering Works & Coal Mines. The words & picturesmake me tremendously sad.
The working class build everything from a pin to an oil tanker,we run society from top to bottom. We bake the cake, then scramble over the crumbs. Its time we took political control over our lives, lets build a society where production is carried out for humanities needs and not profit. Its time to put capitalism into the dustbin of history.

What a wonderful song, makes me so proud to be a Geordie.
A tragedy both Conservative and Labour governments have ripped the hearts out of our ship building, coal mining and steel making communities. We shall not forget.

A wonderful song, a real tribute to the people that made Tyneside a great place. I'm with Ron on this one, brings tears to my eyes; especially as they pull the great cranes of Swan Hunters down. Sad days mixed with Geordie pride.....
