Hello Amiduffer - The Metrolink unit is an EMD F59PH, one of the more common models that Metrolink uses. This one, #860, is in fact a sister locomotive to the one that was involved in the head-on collision with a Union Pacific freight train in Chatsworth, CA on 9-12-08, which was #855. Another common model that Metrolink uses is the EMD F59PHI.
Ouch! Thanks for identifying that. Wish someone would make a tutorial on how to identify the different makes and models. You've got a real sharp eye if you can tell the difference between an F59PH and an F59PHI! What is the difference between those two anyway?
The F59PH and F59PHI are somewhat similar in appearance, however there is one significant difference. The PH is the older model built from 1988-1994 and has the nose entrance in the front of the unit, where the crews get on and off. On the PHI, the crew enters on the side of the unit next to the cab. This is because the PHI is the newer aerodynamic version, with a tapered nose. This is the main way to tell them apart.
Suddenly the world changes. Nice one.
