Martins and Taylors are not the be all end all. Sorry. Though they are fantastic insturments to be sure I'm not sure that anyone would take a $50,000 guitar out on tour,so in reality, they become museum pieces,or toys for wealthy collectors.I will put my Collings up against any Martin or Taylor
well considering Taylor relies heavily on a P.A system, and travels very light for every gig (as he openly says in his book) it must be very annoying to find that the person attending the P.A can't figure out how to get a basic sound. All he wants is a basic sound, and his Vanden does the rest. The guy must have been a retard.
@Han414 You're smoking crack. In the world of flat-top acoustic guitars, Martins and Taylors are the end-all and be-all. Moreover, a new (not vintage) Martin D-100 Deluxe retails for $100K. Even compared with one-off custom luthier-built jazz boxes, that's at the high end of high end guitars.
Wow Deepestburrow, that's quite a story. I can totally empathize with the experience though. Many years ago I got to open for a very respected guitarist (who shall remain nameless). This guitarist was one of my personal favs. Sadly, he turned out to be a dink - arrogant, snooty. I've come to the conclusion that I never want to meet any of my heros again. That being said, MT certainly can play very beautifully - maybe he was just having a bad day.
Hi Deepestburrow. That sucks, but it's the nature of performance. These guys tour so much, the novelty wears off and it becomes really hard to deal with even the simplest tasks (ie PA etc) I've heard the same about many others. Try not to let this experience dissuade you from appreciating MT as a wonderful musician. It's like going to see your favourite band with a bunch of rowdy idiots behind you. Circumstances is all - don't feel dissatisfaction. His musicianship is unquestionable. x
Sorry deepestburrow, I've seen him many times and spoken with him and attended a clinic of his and I must emphatically, and undeniably call B.S. on your statement!
Saw him play at Brecon Jazz this year with Alison Burns. By far the best jazz performance i have seen in years. Made up for how poor the festival atmosphere has become. If you don't like jazz festivals, why move to Brecon????
Taylor, who was to play a gig at my college, threw a hissy fit when the p.a. was not to his liking and refused to perform. i, for one, choose not to seperate the man from his music.maybe if you heard him swearing at the staff like a tempermental diva you'd see taylor as i do...a unprofessional arsehole. you lost alot of fans here mr. taylor.
If the sound isn't right, the sound isn't right. I play mainly drums, but I know the feeling.
Now, I'm not saying what you said isn't true, but my best friend (who got his grade 8 guitar at 15 years old) took an hour-long guitar lesson with Martin a little while back and would strongly disagree with you saying he is an "unprofessional arsehole".
And anyway, how many guitarists (or musicians in general) have you come across that haven't been just a little bit arrogant?
