I am proud to say that my old(now deceased) CG,George Jones was the CO of the 503.I got to know him when I was in the Army in the 1960's.Unfortunately,he was an associate/protage of Gen. MacArthur & while he was a Bird Colonel at the operation,he was never promoted beyond Brigadier General after Mac fell out of favor with Truman due to politics. When I knew him,he was CG of the now defunct Yukon Command at Ft Wainwright,Alaska.
My father was in the 503d...i still remember the stories he told me when I was a child. He never talked to anyone else about it, but opened up to me for some reason.
if i had been in charge, as soon as i heard a Japanese force of great numbers was approaching, i would have immediately sent out hundreds of Guerilla units to make the Japanes incursion a thing they would have regretted!!..........no way would i take on that superior force in open suicidal battle! my entire fighting force would be invisible in the jungles! no movement in daylight.
my grandad also fought in ww2. he joined the guerilla movement. i am very proud of him.
you should be ashamed of your lolo. he should died in the war so that he would never have a grandkid like you. but maybe your lolo is a pussy and you have his genes too.
eww1299 filipino kaba? you talk shit kasi ehhh about sa filipinos soldiers who died to defend our motherland. how dare you to talk shit kanila na filipino ka naman.... get a life mate
My Dad, Francis X. O'Neill, was in the 2nd of the 503rd I company and a veteran of this battle and the jump on "The Rock" . He always told me stories of this time but this brings it all home. My dad died two days ago, 3 Feb 2009. Good Bye FOX, now I understand.
Two great books on the 503rd and 3/34th Infantry's recapture of Corregidor are "Corregidor: Rock Force Assault" by E.M. Flanagan and "Back to Corregidor: America Retakes the Rock" by Gerrard Devlin.
@eww1299 Estupido! My family were members of the guerilla movement. My lolo (grandfather) was killed by Japanese soldiers after being betrayed by a "Makapili". My uncle made sure, when he found out that person's true identity, to gut him like a fish when he met him on the road.
My uncle, Rollin Ammerman from Dana Indiana was in the first drop on Corregidor, on Topside. He was 19 years old with the 503rd. Parachute Regimental Combat Team. He has since passed away. I am sorry he never got the chance to see that his nephew finally got to see the actual combat film of what he did. He told me his unit had a ten-to-one kill ratio, and that he saw "those Japs do some pretty stupid things". Peace to your grandfather, my uncle and all the Americans who served in that nightmare.
nice
