Think you just need to learn how to select the right tripod and head. You've got the wrong one there for the use you want. E.g. at 3:26 you are equating cost with max weight for the head. Completely wrong. And for video you wouldn't use a simple ball head anyway. You could have got a better set-up for video for less than $1,000. If you felt B&H weren't prepared to spend time to help you select the right one, then go somewhere else where they will.
@geogodley Yes of cause ;) And I'm sure you can do it with that head too...
1. Unlock the head.
2. Position the camera.
3. LOCK the head again.
What I'm seeing you're doing is that you unlock it a little, and tension the head.... not locking it, beause you want to get a smooth pan, and have your video camera stay in the position.
Maybe I misunderstood something in your video... (pretty sure i didn't)
Speaking of the tripod, a 3-series Systematic [Carbon Fiber] Gitzo (rated at 18 kg. load) will be quite a bit more stable, I'm sure. Also, try a spreader; it might make a difference. Also, the large (3/8) screw to attach the head to on my G1197 turns out to be removable. I believe that's the case with much higher-end systematic models, too (but I'm not entirely sure). Gitzo heads are nowhere as good as the Arca Swiss, AcraTech or Really Right Stuff ones.
thank you to the dude at b&h that realizes that this is not a multi-thousand dollar rig that keeps cameras where they are without locking it. you put a massive camcorder on relatively cheap legs and a head, you're not gunna get that great of support. not what they're made for. don't bash on the company when you can't even read the user manual and see what these things are made for.
@saltbagajee then why do all my other cheap velbon tripods lock it in place perfectly? velbon 404, 440, lux i f, every tripod does it all, except this $1000 gitzo. why?
Wrong. Gitzo makes legs/heads for motion and still photography (legs are legs, so long as the equipment doesn't exceed their weight class). However, balancing a heavy camera on a head sans friction-control can be like walking the tight rope in high-heels.
Every carbon fiber tripod I've owned "squeaked" a 'lil until after a "break-in" period. Personally, Manfrotto tops my shit list. Gitzo and "Really Right Stuff" typically build quality tripods, as long as you baby them.
@geogodley I have a Slik Pro 700dx for my digital photography. Has no issues that you describe in this video. And better yet it's $139 for the tripod and head or $99 for just the legs if you want to get a different head. Stable like a rock, quick flip lock legs. I wouldn't pay near $1000 for a tripod even if it shit gold ingots...Well maybe then I would....
Isn't that a still photography head? You need a fluid head for video bro. Sachtler FSB8 is the way to go. You should do a little research before you buy the wrong tool for the job. Nice tough though picking up on the Russian babes.
@Chadfish thank you for that..but sachtler's much bulkier. still good to warn people if it's not for video because thats not clear in the store.. it has a fluid head.. the guy said no tripod does what the cheap velbons do unless u pay 70grand!?
Yes I think "70 grand" had to be a mis speak. Anyway you're looking for a small, sleek tripod still? Sadly you have to pay to play. I have a 300.00 manfrotto that does OK, but we're still talking 9 - 10 lbs. It's just physics. If you have a large camera, you need a large fluidhead tripod rated for the weight of your camera. I use an EX1 cam, and that's around 5lbs. I'm dropping 900.00 on Gitzo carbon legs, and another 1,500.00 on Sachtler fsb8 head. 9lbs total. Right tool for the job.
Now I know why they call them" tripods", they " try " your wits. Hope you recovered some of the cash, or at least got a phone number or a call from one of those two girls.
tripe odd.. yea full refund..thats another lesson i never remember: always ask for an email or number coz there's no recourse otherwise. by the way you got some nice ideas, the fun cuts n piano stuff i'll check the rest out sometime
no, the guy in the store said "dont put any grease and dont tilt it like i did or you break the bolt! NO TENSION/ FRICTION CONTROL!" unbeleivable when all the cheap Velbons have it.
Got to agree with njb311... Do you research before you plunk down the money. You should have been looking for a fluid head.

@geogodley Hmmm.... Let's just leave it ;) Otherwise this just ends up to be a looong discussion... ;)
Conclusion:
Photographers, it's a good head, but EXPENSIVE!
Videographers: DONT buy it! Rubbish for video....
have a nice day ;)
