It is NOT a double standard. Japan did NOT eat whale 200 years ago did they? Traditional people did. I NEVER see any paintings of the WHALE eating culture of Japan. I do NOT respect TRADITION as an excuse for anything. Slavery is traditional. So is bigamy. But those 2 concepts are outdated. Perhaps WHALING has become outdated? Perhaps in the future eating all kinds of meat will become outdated.
Let's take on these points one by one.
Number 1: How important is whale meat to the average Japanese. Let's agree that RICE = 100. And GRUBS = 0. Where does whale meat fall?

i dont know what number whale meat falls to. probably low. somewhere above macdonald. it became low for the past 20 years i guess. i dont quite agree on scaling importance of foods, but i dont think japan need to give up any foods above 0. how important is it to YOU to stop our eating whale meat? i want your answer on this.

It is completely UNimportant to me whether Japanese eat whale meat. I just question whether Japan should be damaging it's international reputation on something that SO few people actually eat.

It is NOT a double standard. Japan did NOT eat whale 200 years ago did they? Traditional people did. I NEVER see any paintings of the WHALE eating culture of Japan. I hear it is a fairly RECENT "tradition" and even if I am wrong about people eating whale in the samurai days... whale hunting on a massive scale is very different from letting a very small group of indigenous people hunt whales. Potential damage to a species that is at risk of extinction is MUCH lower. Right?

japan has a history of whaling over 2000 years.
japan seriously wants the sea food resources continuously obtainable, and is not asking for massive hunting whales. its strange that those indiginous people can hunt endangered spieces and japan cant even hunt increasing spieces which are damaging the fish resources. worse than double standard.
so, is the issue here the AMOUNT? i thought you want japan to STOP it.
