  • thanks for your video....I have my work cut out for me and my little deaf dog!

  • Still*

  • Wen can you teach a puppy sign language?? My female albino pitbull is 8 weeks old and she is very happy pup and cant stay so wen would be a gud time for her to learn??

  • @lagri33 at 8 weeks old puppies whether they are hearing or deaf, puppies do not usually have stay down..continue training and teaching eventually she will catch on. Start using the signs now all the time...its just like how you lunderstand your language by your parents you heard (or saw it) all the time and eventually caught on. I would highly recommend that you take a training class, most classes are to train the owner on how to train the puppy and you can use signs in place of voice commands.

  • How did you train them to recognize so many signs? I have a double merle aussie puppy and I'm wondering how to train her.

  • @xiaojay888 As with training any dog (deaf or hearing), consistency, repetition and reward is important Start with most important sign is "good job/yes." we use thumbs up sign with treat for reward. Start with one or two commands. Practice, reward, repeat. We adopted a deaf aussie and he's the best dog. Message me if you'd like some deaf dog education websites!

  • @xiaojay888 same way you treat/clicker train a hearing dog, except you use signs instead of sounds. If you take a class learn the signs first so you know what to use while they say the common commands.

  • I really like this video, I have been making good use of it.

My dog isn't deaf, but I don't like to actually talk to it, especially in public places (weird facet of social anxiety), I have been working heavily on geastures and this video really helped to elaborate on that!

  • @Charmalite Thanks! My hearing dog uses them too :) We have 4 dogs now (3 deaf 1 hearing) and it helps them all. Glad it could help you too.

  • Thank you for this information! Excellent video! Your dogs are luck to have you!

  • @HallieUtube Thanks :) We're just as lucky to have them :) Now I just need a car big enough to transport all 4 (3 deaf and 1 hearing) plus me & my hubby hehe. Onneddayyyy

  • I love this and we cant wait to use it with our deaf boxer! Thanks

  • @ashleybrianlucy Hope its been going well :) Thank you

  • how long does it take the dog to learl a sign? is age really important? my dog refuses to follow the signs and focuses on the treat!

  • @yoopieyaya Every dog is different, age plays a part in their attention span...just like kids. The fact that your dog is really interested in the treats is a great thing though because he can't have it until he does the action you want ...when he realizes that he'll start doing things faster. :) Remember you have to train the action before you attach a word/sign to it. :) It will take patience but he sounds like he'll do anything for the treat eventually :) good luck

  • @alishamcgraw What is the sign for "I think you are hot"

  • This is really helpful!! Do you have a sign for going for a walk or do you just get the leash and they automatically know?

  • @Paralyzedhope got to about 5:15 in the video :) We ask them if they need to go OUTSIDE when referring to needing to go to the bathroom or we ask if they want to go on a WALK sometimes too. :) leashes are a dead give away as well. When we're lazy sitting and they come up to us, we can ask them i they are hungry and if they don't respond we can ask i they need to go outside and they'll run to which every they are wanting.

  • THANK YOU!!!!

I have a deaf puppy and have been struggling to find something that will teach me some of the basics...it's unbelievably hard to go from vocal commands to silent ones, but this is going to be SO helpful!

  • @angelam1824 welcome!!! Hope it helps. It WILL get easier after a bit once you get used to it :)

  • I want to adopt a deaf dog some day and when I was looking around on yt for deaf dog videos I found this one. So interesting! Do you think that a hearing dog could really help with a deaf dog too? Like help show them the ropes and such?

  • It was so nice to meet you today! Thank you for taking our pictures! Also, I love your videos! I am totally going to use some of these signs with the dog that I am working with that is deaf. So, COOL! 5*s

  • @pamelamarxsen SOOO happy to have met you as well. I am not used to YouTube comments/how to access them sorry it took so long to reply :)

  • Your videos are so good! I'm blind dog owner/trainer. Dogs have a lot of abilities. I think R+ dog training can improve quality of life of disabled dogs and provide enjoyment to them :)

  • Thanks :) my dogs are not perfect angels but we have good communication. So important. haha

  • watched this a million times! I hope to be fostering a deaf 11mo pit mix, she is at a local shelter and is terrified. Thank you sooo much for this!

  • welcome :) & have fun with the pup :)

  • Thank you so much! For someone that has no experience in signing this will make all the difference for our success. Watching you sign it and explain when and how you us it is wonderful. THANKS!!!

  • Thanks & welcome! glad it could help. :)

  • Hello Alisha!

I am super stoked about your tutorial because I just rescued a pit-bull who is deaf! Not sure exactly how old she is but she's still pretty young. She's super sharp so this should be fun!!

    Thank you :)

  • I'm excited for you!! If I can suggest anything its teach her as much as you can while she is young and small :) it will make a huge difference! :)

  • Hi Alisha,

I've been learning from your videos after taking in a 8 week old pit/dalmatian deaf puppy. I am fostering him for 2 weeks until I can have him placed at a local rescue, don't know if I will be able to part with him after that. :-) Bevyn is my profile picture. I'm using some of your basic signs and fortunately our 2 lab mix dogs have stepped in as mom & pop - the three are so happy together. We have 2 acres fenced in for them to run. We have 4 dogs & 5 cats - Bevyn would make it 5/5

  • Thanks :)

  • Lol i love your video. 5 stars!

  • Thank you :) Glad it helped. Coco has her CGC but I need to take Rocket to get tested, he turned 2 in October so maybe by then I will have him ready hehe. :)

  • What a great, informative video! I will watch this again to pick up some signs I don't know. We have a 9 month old deaf liver Dalmatian. He is learning signs, but slowly. We have his sister as well and she is hearing so we find ourselves talking to her and he simply follows her lead. I want to work more with him with signs. Both of them recently earned their CGC. The judge said Chance (the deaf Dal) was "the best dog" there that day hands down! (And that was out of about 20 Dals.)

  • What a great and informative video! My 4.5 month old American Pit Bull is picking up signing very quickly which suits me as I`m in my mid-twenties w/ early onset presbycucis. Being able to sign vs. having to speak and rely on sound makes my world SO much easier! So, thanks for the information and give my love to your dogs!

  • Thank you, my dogs say thanks for the love too :) Give your PB hugs...dogs are so visual I am sure he/she will pick up the signs very quickly. They absorb so much at 4 months too...once they hit 6 months it will get even better :) [just remember most dogs go through a teenage stage where they will ignore you as they proclaim "big boy" independence...that'sso normal but keep working signs no matter what]

  • Adorable!!

  • You´ve created a lot of good signs for deaf dogs. But I dont really know how to train the dogs the signs. I´m sure you can make all these signs and your dog..how does he know what they mean? I´m about to get a deaf dog in a little bit and it would be great if somebody could explain me how that part works =)

  • thanks for sending this video. Awesome. Deafloves com

  • you are awesome! I'm saving this 5 star vid to my faves for future reference! Thank you!

  • Thanks, glad someone is actually watching :)

  • I knew sign 1st and then someone contact me about help with training a deaf dog, we decided we wanted Coco and wow has that changed my life! I am so happy to have deaf dogs, there are benefits that seem to outweigh the fact that they can't hear...sine I knew sign language communication was no problem at all. However, I think anyone could communicate with a deaf dog - learning about 10-30 signs minimum shouldn't be hard for an average person :)

  • wow, thats really cool... did you learn to sign because of your dogs or did you get the dogs because you sign?!

  • I hate to burst your bubble but it isn't deaf dogs that are spreading the gene that causes deafness...it is hearing dogs. I would hate to hear your thoughts about Deaf people because less than 50 years ago there were uneducated individuals saying the same thing about humans who couldn't hear. Following that theory of thought we'd probably have another Holocaust on our hands.

  • why do you own deaf dogs when you could own normal dogs...i dont wanna be mean but all deaf dogs should be put down, all they do is keep breeding and spreading deafness around which really concerns me, in 15 years all dogs could be deaf

  • your a bit of a moron, really get a life.

  • Woah, that was low.
