  • Wow!

  • I grew up in Fresno, California. One of the roughest toughest places in the U.S. My mother and father separated when I was about 10yrs old. I have a lot of machismo as a mexican american man, but my father was a great man and he had a heart of gold. I remember listening to this song with him when I was a little child and even then me and my dad would get sentimental. I never forgot this song or the lyrics. My dad passed in December 2007 and Im now 43yrs old. The world was a beautiful place then.

  • Beautiful song ..... sung by a great voice..... I have often listened to this song I have it on an old cassette....thanks for posting this copy sounds great I will convert it over to an mp3 and put it on a cd and keep it close by.......it will get heavy rotation..

  • all the lonely people, young & old, don't forget the homeless, its not our fault...visit a friend you haven't seen in awhile, thanks for the post, very touching

  • I can't listen to this song without bringing a tear to my eye. Just a poor little orphan looking for someone, anyone, to shahre her love with. Very touching.

  • I always liked this song. Of course, I liked the whole album.

  • SO TRUE, WE STILL HAD RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER, SOMETHING YOU DONT SEE IN THE YOUNG ONES COMING UP NOW !!

  • loved it.....Mac Davis is great

  • Nice post....this is one touching song...Mac is probably the only singer that could touch our hearts with it.....thanks for posting brings back a memory or two..

  • The first time I heard this song I cried. Mac Davis is one of the great song writers of his time. He wrote hits for many, many other singers. I saw him in Waco, Texas and me and my sister was lucky enough to get a picture taken with him. He is just as sweet in person as his songs are. Thank you Mac for all the wonderful songs you shared from your heart to us. Oh, I love your movies too. Your just too funny!

  • I have loved Mac Davis since I was a kid! I first fell in love with this album then learned of the many songs he wrote for others. My favorite songwritter! Love you mac!

  • Loneliness is the absolute worst feeling. These two so different people found what they both desperately needed, only for a season. But wasn't that enough?

  • Thanks for uploading this very touching song !

  • I'm surprised that this song was never a huge hit. The words are so sweet and tender and although it is a difficult song to sing, Mack certainly did a masterful job with the unequalled resonance and tonal quality of his voice. One of my all-time favs!

  • One of the greatest ever.

  • wow what a gem, a REAL song...with such tenderness.....how can ya not cry at this??

    WadeElvisMan

  • A beautiful song, a great singer, a great writer is Mac Davis!! Whatever is he doing now?

  • when I was a kid this song hit my heart...

  • @RWOODWARD64

    A beautiful song, a beautiful heart. <3

  • who wrote this beautiful little song?- great arrangement by Mac & co.

  • Listen...I have not checked the tunes on "The Best Of Mac Davis", but to me, this was, and will always be, one of his greatest. "Best Of" are nice, but what we really need is a release on CD of "Song Painter" by Mac...beyond awesome. For those of you who may have been blessed enough to have purchased it in LP form...you know what I am talking about...MAC...awesome possum!!!...Tunesmith

  • @tunesmith09 "Song Painter" has been released on cd (in 2010) on the TBird (a subsidiary of the UK label, Cherry Red). It is paired with his "I Believe In Music" album. It's great to finally have this classic music available, I've worn out my vinly copies.

  • @grooverunner Thanks for your reply...I just became aware of the CD to which you refer a couple of months ago. Unfortunatly, I checked with the Barnes and Noble store near me and it is out of print. I don't like purchasing "used" CDs so will continue to search for a new "un-opened" one somewhere...thanks again...Tunesmith

  • the 70s is'nt a decade it is a feeling that only those who lived it can understand it. if you cant get emotional with 70s songs then your heart must be made of stone

  • @MrWogo.... You are so right my friend.. you could never understand the 70's unless you were there.. I started college in fall of 1970.. I lived, loved, laughed, and cried through the 70's.. and the music was Iconic.. You said so much in a small paragraph... Thank you MrWogo.... RickzzSands

  • Oh man, I completely forgot about this song....so beautiful. Love Mac Davis! x o

  • oh boy,i love these old singer/songwriters.Somebody needs to show these no-talent dipshits of today how to write a song.I remember my mom wanting to sleep with mac davis back in the day,lol

  • Where in the world is Mac Davis, now? I love this guy- I love his music. He is my favourite country music singer. He is a great, great man - Mac Davis is! Gosh! I miss hearing him.

  • @grayzah .. I saw Mac Davis in concert in 1973 in LaGrande, Oregon at Eastern Oregon Stae College and he just brought the house down... When he did this song there wasn't a dry eye in the house!!! I'll always treasure this concert... What a time to be young in this era.. late 60's and 70's.. Fast cars.. cute girls with waffled hair, and "waffle" stompers.. and bootleg 8-track tapes... I lived it and loved it.. and it will never be again.. the greatest music "EVER".. RickzzSands AKA Mr LasVegas

  • @RICKzzSANDS I agree, the music, the culture...I miss it all

  • A gem from 1970's "Songpainter" album (the very first Mac Davis album, I believe) which is one of the best singer songwriter albums ever! The talented arranger was Artie Butler and the album was produced by Jerry Fuller. It included my favorite song "Home" which sadly, is still relevant today. thank you for this!

  • this song still makes me cry after all theses years i was only 12 when this song come out and it was a pretty vido too the vido was made in columbus ga

  • Oh my God. My sister put this on my wall on Facebook. I loved this song when I was a kid. I would cry and cry and cry. Could never remember the name of it, but I always remembered the song. Thank You to whoever put this up.

  • i grew up with mac davis... he is my mom's favorite singer/songwriter and my favorite songwriter. my siblings and i loved this particular album so much we scratched the crap out of it playing it while she was at work. *boy was she not happy* i am still looking for a copy to replace the record. i'm looking for picking up the pieces and if you add all the love in the world. does anyone know where i can find them?listening to this makes me feel like i'm 3 dancing carelessly again. • I believe this briefly hit the charts in the fall of 1969 -but I heard it once and strained to hear it again on the radio station that played it every morning once or twice. What a great song-thanks for the post.

  • I remember back in the early 70's, Waylon Jennings was coming to town and I bought tickets, then something happened to Waylon and they said that Mac Davis was taking his place so most everybody in town got their money back. Wish I hadn't now. He was just starting out back then and nobody had ever heard of him. Oh Well!!!!!

  • WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO MACK. I LOVED HIS SHOW BACK IN THE 70's

  • I had forgotten about this wonderful song....I always loved it. He sang another song called "Forever Lovers, Forever Friends" but am having a hard time finding it. Do you know where I can look?

  • He has such a wonderful voice. I haven't seen him on TV or anywhere in over 20 years. Guess he is still around. He was a good songwriter, didn't he write "In the Ghetoo"? I know Elvis made ahit of it but I think Mac wrote it. I could be wrong.

  • This brings back so many memories. What a beautiful song!

  • The old man has been waiting for June...The day he died?!

  • Hello, the Darkest Angel,

In the lyrics "Another summer's come and gone"

and will come back again...But before that ...

"He had long lonely nights ahead waiting for June"

This is what I think. Does it make sense to you?

    Regards,

    Wendy

  • It makes sense! You are a great good gorgeous genius!

  • Yeah, great song with meaning. As I write this I feel a change in the wind, summer of 2009 is almost gone here in Newfoundland. The fall scenery will be breath taking.

  • Dear friend, thank you for sharing the sentiment.

    Wendy

  • back to the winter of '72 while serviced in honour guard company of army heard the beautiful sad song tks for upload/st-ord

  • This is a sad, beautiful song. Yet the fact is that it is based on a story that appeared in an EC comic about a little mutant girl in an orphanage who was writing a letter. The others all thought she was sending a message to aliens to come an attack earth and in a paranoid stampede they chased her. She fell out a window onto an iron fence and was impaled. The tender note fluttered from her lifeless fingers to the ground where an old gentleman retrieved it from the fallen leaves.Still beautiful.

  • Look up Keith Laumer's short story, "The Message"...similar.

  • what?

  • as "yerself" sees this Lovely song" still I cannot give ye nae a tiny shot of a negavity or anything close tae what ye see in this song!!!!!!!!

  • Absolutely

  • Beautiful song sung by an awesome singer!

  • I just love this song... :)

  • I sang this song once at an FFA banquet. I got requests to do it from then on. Mac Davis is the great modern song writer.

  • I love Chyi Yu's version better. The music, the voice and the tempo really brings out the sadness and loneliness of the whole song.

  • Relisten to Mac's version. It sounds so much more sincere

  • i think this song is so powerful because it reminds us all that i love you should never be underestimated!

  • As a die hard faan of Mac davis I have many of his albums. I think this is my favorite of all his songs.

  • Beautiful song.

  • With Parents who were gone way too much running a business, I can relate all too well even though I was not from an orphan's home. My brother was disabled and 7 years older. (I never was the regular fan type, but Mac Davis was both sexy and talented. Wonder what he's doing now days? Anyone know?) Jenna

  • Great song, wonderful. I send it to everyone. Thanks Mac!!!!!

  • The brilliant Mac Davis WROTE this song...and sings like an angel.

  • Very, very nice song, sad but a lovely song.

  • what a pretty song and it envokes so many memories and i love them all.

  • This song just makes me cry. It is deeply moving and emphasises how much the human spirit needs to be loved. It doesn't matter who or what we are, we are not complete until we feel love.

  • I cried too.

  • very touching song. I first heard it sung by Chyi and went to buy the CD. Didnt know Mac Davis sang this song. I love "Baby Dont Get Hooked on me" by him. Was very popular in the early 70s.

  • Wonderful song, I'll cry after heard this every times. The lyric is very very touching.

  • I saw Mac in Peoria Illinois and will never forget how much fun we had...wow...30 years ago already. Thanks Mac!

  • I have been a MAC DAVIS fan since my daughter Melissa was born in 1972!! I loved his music then and still find his music soulful, and very comforting.. He is the ultimate song writer and so very talented.. I agree with Rusty's post.. Mac is the most underrated singer/song writer in the history of country music!! IF I ever get the chance to see him in concert again, I would be thrilled!!

  • Thanks for sharing an awesome song. It's great no matter who sings it! (except maybe me).

  • Yes, no matter who, necessarily including you, whoever has a beautiful heart!

  • Go Mac!

  • "Rock and Roll I gave you the best years of my life" was written by the Australian Songwriter Kevin Johnson. Mac Davis did a version in 1975.

  • Thank you for sharing. Sincerely, Wendy

  • I don't know where you got your information but Mac Davis is the original writer of the lyrics "Rock and Roll I Gave You The Best years of My Life". I have the original album "Stop and Smell The Roses" and I seriously doubt the composer credits are wrong. Mac wrote hundreds of songs that were hits for others before he recorded them for himself.

  • yes, he did write a of songs for other vocalists, like "Kentucy Rain" that Elvis Presley recorded....what a awsome song!!

    Geri, from "The Villages, Florida

  • He has a song called " Rock and roll I Gave The Best Years Of My Life" i havent heard it for ages, and its a proper gem, a lovely tune, i hope it finds its way on here soon. G x

  • Dear gordoarcane, thank you for the info, I will certainly look for it. Best regards, Wendy

  • Mac Davis, you are still one of the greatest song writters in the history of music!

  • Mac Davis is still one my favorites.

  • I heard this song from chiyu long time ago and it hit my heart, and now I know the original writer and singer. For some reason, I like the Chiyu's version better. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank YOU!

    :)

  • Me too, I heard this song in Chiyi's version first.

    I'm Hong Kong people.

  • Mac Davis is probably the most underrated and under appreciated male singer/songwriter in the history of country music.
