I like her very much......I hope she can dropby to the Philippines and have a concert like this......you know our country doesn't like this music.....there are only a few who draw their interest in classical repertoire.......and im one of them
Wonderful! shes so sensitive and makes sure everyone gets the applause deserved. it was so funny when she walked back in the end to pull out that guy that was singing in the back..lol...and he comes running out horrified that she was actually walking back. :)
Waht a FANTASTICA interpretation of Violetta´s Aria from La Travial....The final note was out of this world. Beautiful voice, technique and talent are shown by Ms. Sumi Jo...Thanks so much for sharing it. Love it
ur so right! i feel like violetta is the role that every lighter voiced soprano aspires to sing. i dunno why, because after the first act its murder for them, plus anyone with the assets to sing it only does it as a meal ticket usually. its a devilishly difficult role.
You have to take with someone who has actually sung the role in live performance to get a feel for how tiring and how difficult it is. Verdi threw together Traviava in one month. His comment on it was that it was for a singer of unusual strength. The first Violetta tired on stage and her voice cracked. It took a year to find another one who could actually do the role. I'm sure he knew the role pursued the edge of human endurance, but the opera soon grew so popular he never tamed it.
Man, even that top note at the end has such a depth to its timbre, even in comparison to the other recording of her singing this on youtube, back from 2005. Brilliant, really, even considering the sound quality.
Her timbre is so chill, refreshing, pleasant and clear. I was depressed but now I feel upbeat after listening to this. Her coloratura voice worked magic on me.
Simply outstanding!!!!! She deserves an standing ovation for this. I love Sumi, so sensitive and professional. One of the best coloratura soprano in our century.
MY GOD she was wonderful! Her pronunciation was great! Although for some reason her high notes didn't sound as "full" like Sopranos should sound. In my personal rating, she it in the top 5. My number 1 will always be Maria Callas though, she is a true enchantress. Also, she never used a mic; which I hear that Sopranos that don't use mic's have a thing against those who do.
Sopranos don't use microphones when performing in an opera house the Met, Scala etc... but most soprano's do use a mic when performing at concerts where the audience is much bigger and the acoustics of the hall would not hold an un-microphoned voice well.
Hmm... Jo's voice definitely sounds bigger than it usually does. I suppose it's because of a mic. Anyway her coloratura is indeed exquisite. She still has it. I thought she lost it. Brava!
Maria Callas... oh please...she just does SO MAY things wrong... she was popular because of all the scandals and I guess she was good then...but nowadays... she is only a name, she can't compare to today's sopranos like Sumi Jo
You dont have to get nasty. You seem like the type of person who hated Callas. I bet there are hundreds of people that would disagree with your comment, I love Sumi too, but Callas is the real deal! She had impeccable pronunciation/annunciation,& she spoke most of the Romance languages fluently/she is Beautiful, she & had charisma, she acted & felt the music. There are no words to explain her fully. Also, there are far greater ones like Rebecca Cain/Sutherland/Popp/Hidalgo etc I Still like Sumi
I do not hate Callas... I just see that she does MANY MANY things wrong(which all my canto teachers also said)... She was beautiful and she did all those things you've said but the fact stands that she really was popular because of the scandals... And anyway singing was different then and she was probably the best then...
And for the others you've mentioned... Sumi does the legato in a very unique way and everything is just so precise...
can you tell me briefly what she's doing wrong? i'm not a callas fan and i'm not a singer, but i like listening classic music and watching master classes.
maybe its the antique recording equipment on all the Callas recordings, but to me, Callas sounds hollow, sometimes shrill, and never particularly smooth...
I have to say, the room acoustics on this recording are also kind of annoying, but that's not Sumi Jo's fault, just as crappy recordings aren't Callas' fault.
Still, I never felt much heart in Callas interpretations... we all have different ears and perceptions, of course.
Its is difficult to judge music in YOUTUBE. The internet is not the best equipment to play music. Some of the best singers sound terrible because of this.
Excellent.

eric0182 3 years ago

icylakepaxphile 3 years ago
Dear icylakepaxphile,
Thanks for clarifying Sumi Jo's name. I had no idea what it was in Korean.
I didn't know many Chinese wrongly assume it was 周淑美. But after you mentioned it realized why they might.
Sumi does sound as if it might be "淑美" and many Cantonese translate 周 as "Joe."
Anyway Koreans can be proud of her. She's a wonderful singer.
