  • I love it when a note of warm gold turns to cold silver.

  • !!!!!!!!!

  • eww. bad acoustics for sumi to sing.. but wonderful performance.

  • Isn't Sumi Jo fabulous! What a gift to humanity. And what a delight to FINALLY get to see her in a gown that is as lovely as Sumi herself:)

  • Qué voz impresionante...

  • Wonderful performance. Sumi is probably one of the best sopranos in the world today. Thank you for this video

  • estoy flipando! no existen palabras....

  • This is the most active I've ever seen her on stage.

  • what a glorious voice. was in tears throughout.tom

  • Sweet and clear....I like it....

  • this is so clean and amazing smh i love it

  • I love the heels stomping when she first comes out 0:00

  • I like her very much......I hope she can dropby to the Philippines and have a concert like this......you know our country doesn't like this music.....there are only a few who draw their interest in classical repertoire.......and im one of them

  • Pure beauté. Vrai chef d'oeuvre

  • Can't quite make her voice match with the video. Anyway I assume it's her fabulous voice singing. Wish I had a tenth of that voice...

  • Wonderful! shes so sensitive and makes sure everyone gets the applause deserved. it was so funny when she walked back in the end to pull out that guy that was singing in the back..lol...and he comes running out horrified that she was actually walking back. :)

  • BRAVA!

  • MEREVIGLIOSA.... è riuscita a farmi piangere..

  • Waht a FANTASTICA interpretation of Violetta´s Aria from La Travial....The final note was out of this world. Beautiful voice, technique and talent are shown by Ms. Sumi Jo...Thanks so much for sharing it. Love it

  • <3 for Sumi Jo. :D

  • Her giant sleeves are so awesome, haha.

I really love Sumi Jo on this song, she is amazing!!! :)

  • ur so right! i feel like violetta is the role that every lighter voiced soprano aspires to sing. i dunno why, because after the first act its murder for them, plus anyone with the assets to sing it only does it as a meal ticket usually. its a devilishly difficult role.

  • You have to take with someone who has actually sung the role in live performance to get a feel for how tiring and how difficult it is. Verdi threw together Traviava in one month. His comment on it was that it was for a singer of unusual strength. The first Violetta tired on stage and her voice cracked. It took a year to find another one who could actually do the role. I'm sure he knew the role pursued the edge of human endurance, but the opera soon grew so popular he never tamed it.

  • i dont think i want a feel for how difficult it is lol. i have my own fachs to deal with.

  • acabo de tener un orgasmo musical XD

  • Man, even that top note at the end has such a depth to its timbre, even in comparison to the other recording of her singing this on youtube, back from 2005. Brilliant, really, even considering the sound quality.

  • she does sounds quite good i was getting worried for a while that her voice was starting to wear.

Entonces EL ROJO PUES DEBE SER!!!!!!!ENTIENDES!!!!!!!!!! Y LA COPIA DEL ESCENARIO TAMBIEN QUE TRADICION DE OPERA TIENE CHINAAAAAA!!!!!!!

  • .... perdón?

  • perdonado

  • Her timbre is so chill, refreshing, pleasant and clear. I was depressed but now I feel upbeat after listening to this. Her coloratura voice worked magic on me.

  • WoW

She indeed sings well. Much better than many other singers in this decades

  • I really like her voice.

    Her voice is very clear.

Sumi Jo is one of the best coloratura sopranos.

  • @ymlee7 I agree she is a great coloratura sop... but the best compared to Damrau? Just wondering. Is it because of her lighter top?

  • Simply outstanding!!!!! She deserves an standing ovation for this. I love Sumi, so sensitive and professional. One of the best coloratura soprano in our century.

  • true dat.

  • Dear icylakepaxphile,

Thanks for clarifying Sumi Jo's name. I had no idea what it was in Korean.

I didn't know many Chinese wrongly assume it was 周淑美. But after you mentioned it realized why they might.

Sumi does sound as if it might be "淑美" and many Cantonese translate 周 as "Joe."

Anyway Koreans can be proud of her. She's a wonderful singer.

  • perfekt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i could officially say that this aria has Sumi Jo written ALL over it. this is amazing. with each passing time she sings it, it gets so much better.

  • oh americans. so naive and idiotic.

  • MY GOD she was wonderful! Her pronunciation was great! Although for some reason her high notes didn't sound as "full" like Sopranos should sound. In my personal rating, she it in the top 5. My number 1 will always be Maria Callas though, she is a true enchantress. Also, she never used a mic; which I hear that Sopranos that don't use mic's have a thing against those who do.

    Nevertheless, she did well.

  • Sopranos don't use microphones when performing in an opera house the Met, Scala etc... but most soprano's do use a mic when performing at concerts where the audience is much bigger and the acoustics of the hall would not hold an un-microphoned voice well.

  • Also, sometimes one can see a mic, but it's not necessarily for amplification.

Sometimes it's there merely to record the performance.

  • Hmm... Jo's voice definitely sounds bigger than it usually does. I suppose it's because of a mic. Anyway her coloratura is indeed exquisite. She still has it. I thought she lost it. Brava!

  • Maria Callas... oh please...she just does SO MAY things wrong... she was popular because of all the scandals and I guess she was good then...but nowadays... she is only a name, she can't compare to today's sopranos like Sumi Jo

  • You dont have to get nasty. You seem like the type of person who hated Callas. I bet there are hundreds of people that would disagree with your comment, I love Sumi too, but Callas is the real deal! She had impeccable pronunciation/annunciation,& she spoke most of the Romance languages fluently/she is Beautiful, she & had charisma, she acted & felt the music. There are no words to explain her fully. Also, there are far greater ones like Rebecca Cain/Sutherland/Popp/Hidalgo etc I Still like Sumi

  • I do not hate Callas... I just see that she does MANY MANY things wrong(which all my canto teachers also said)... She was beautiful and she did all those things you've said but the fact stands that she really was popular because of the scandals... And anyway singing was different then and she was probably the best then...

And for the others you've mentioned... Sumi does the legato in a very unique way and everything is just so precise...

  • can you tell me briefly what she's doing wrong? i'm not a callas fan and i'm not a singer, but i like listening classic music and watching master classes.

  • i'm a callas fan. but i really like sumi's singing. she did not wrong from any aspect. just different.

  • maybe its the antique recording equipment on all the Callas recordings, but to me, Callas sounds hollow, sometimes shrill, and never particularly smooth...

I have to say, the room acoustics on this recording are also kind of annoying, but that's not Sumi Jo's fault, just as crappy recordings aren't Callas' fault.

Still, I never felt much heart in Callas interpretations... we all have different ears and perceptions, of course.

  • i didnt say sumi jo is a bad singer. in fact, i like her very much. and i realize this is not a good recording. but i think callas is overrated.

  • Its is difficult to judge music in YOUTUBE. The internet is not the best equipment to play music. Some of the best singers sound terrible because of this.

  • FATASTICO

  • wonderful

  • I don't think the quality does the justice of her voice here. I think she sounds fabulous as always :)

  • Excellent. Merci, Bravissima

  • her e flat always sounded like this

  • I won't lie, the high E flat wasn't singing it was screaming to a song. I've heard her hit it beautifully before so it's not like she can't do it. Other then that note it was beautiful, I love Sumi to this song.

  • mmmm its different style of intepretation I think

  • I think your system's sound coupled with youtube's limitations have affected your answer. Aside from that, I'm sick of carping operaphiles who continuously invoke some mythical "Golden Age" when all singers were better in some way. There never was a "Golden Age."The bouncy Mafalda Favero sings Traviata as if she's trying out for community theatre. Ms. Jo, in concert, is infinitely more subtle and mature. I'd leave my family for Jo. As for Favero, I'd give her carfare and send her home.

  • She is much better than 10-15 years ago because her voice has matured and been more warm and soft. This repertoire is good for her, but I do believe that she should watch out for high finaly-notes as the high e-flat in the end. There she reveals her past with that hard, cold sound that isn´t beautiful. From now on she should sing Fiodiligi, Donna Anna and maybe Konstanze. Not the ultra-high roles...

  • yes but remember that women vocal range cant have full voice in High notes :), either it sound like screaming or pitchy he he he

  • No, it doesn´t has to sound screamy or pitchy... It depends on the singer if her voice and technique will support the notes above c3.

  • WTF!!!!!!! C3 is really low, its not hard to support notes above it. Do you mean C6????

  • C3 is the European equivalent of American C6 ;-)

  • Oh i get it..

    thanks

  • hello... in which world do u live in.? I live on planet Earth, and on planet Earth C3 is Very High...

coloraturas have F3, so I guess it's not so high for them... but C3 is very high...

  • I live on planet earth too, but in a place where the C below middle C is known as C3...

Its called an American system of pitch notation.

Did you not read the above comments?????

  • she did much better..

  • Outstanding job. This is a most difficult aria to sing. The endurance it takes is increadible. She played the part beautifully. I love the fact that everytime I watch her perform this, she gives it yet another idea. Bravo! Thank you for posting.

  • Plus, in response to kngiht84's comment about the absense of the staccati at the end. I guess as she's world renowned as one of the best coloratura soprano's of our age, she probably wanted to showcase this to the audience and performing the cadenza does this spectacularly. Jo can execute staccati tremendously well if she had wanted to so...Check out her Oscar in the 1989 Karajan Un ballo in maschera for an example.

  • Sumi Jo's acting skills have developed immensely! I think this has much to do with the fact that Jo played Violetta earlier this year at the Toulouse Opera. Many have referred to her as "the machine" and as all technique and no heart but I think this performance truly conveys how shes developed a sense of drama in her singing style. Sound quality is very poor which makes the last high note sound a bit iffy...Glad to see shes still on top form 20 years after her debut!

  • She always skips the staccato at the end.

  • You mean the staccati? I prefer the cadenza she does, and I believe its far more difficult than the staccati

  • saving energy I think

  • I dont know why she tries to do high notes. They sound horrible. The last one was like a scream. Its like she has a limit, she has a very beautiful voice until a limit. When she surpasses that limit it sounds very annoying.

  • he he he when you in her position to sing this song I dont think you want to post this comment :)

  • Yes. I do. That's why I did it! =)

  • he he well at least we maybe know about your debut then :)

  • debut? keep smoking pot =S

  • her last high note gave me goosebumps. truly amazing.

  • sa robe est belle comme sa voix

  • Sumi Jo sang four concerts in Beijing last week. This one was broadcasted on many countries and the President of China was in the Theatre.

She also sang one solo concert and a gala with Renee Fleming and Hvorostovsky. Angela Gheorgiu sang also in Bejing those days. Jo outshone Fleming and Gheorghiu. I think she is back in top form.

  • Genial!!! I love her

  • I love her voice

    One of the best!!!

  • wow is this related to beijing olympic?

  • In every aspect, she is in top form here.

Glad to see and hear it.

    Thanks for posting!

    Peter

  • omg..sumi's expressivity has really deepen..

Amazingly beautiful-colored tone for violetta. very fresh!

Her breath control is already beyond perfection!!

    Really gorgeous singing and presence!

  • beautiful singing, thank you for posting!!!

  • I LOVE THAT DRESS

    plus she sounds incredible

  • i can't believe last high note..

  • Excellent......
