  • weather report ere god hibba jazz

  • Je préfère Chester Thompson à la batterie comme sur le disque

  • 7 people are jealous they can't play like this... LOL

  • @jode72 Nope. Eight people think this overrated, druggy hack, is only famous because he played bass solo and died at a young age. "Cliff Burton roolz" anyone? Same idol worshiping crap, different genre.

  • che mix esplosivo: grandissimi

  • That riff at 2:40 blows my mind! So beautiful, yet tense at the same time! I'm not even a huge fan of this fusion style, but you can't deny good music when you hear it! Nice...

  • ahhh erskine i'm liking your linear drumming :)

  • I can see why Jimmy Chamberlin loves this band so much

  • Erskine on drums, isn't it?

  • He's got more keyboards then Yanni !!!

  • TOOOOPPPPPP!!!!

  • This is the groovingest song possibly ever. Impossibly catchy. There will never be another Weather Report.

  • Zaw, he plays upside down.

  • I saw them in 1981 in Tokyo. The sound created by these amazing four (+1) blew me away. Fantastic band, ever.

  • Zawinul; It makes you play new things.

    binkie.net/wrdisc/Black%20Market.html

  • Strange thing is that upper keyboard is laterally inverted, left is higher, but that is not in a mirror, because lower key board is normal.

  • opus dei chor bazaar''

  • Peter Erskine does that beautiful snare drum with his left hand only !!!!!

  • @NESPASISI actually in alex acuna

  • that's it for the keyboard !!!

  • l'essenza della musica !!!cazzo di miti!!!!

  • Really great rhythm section work for sure.

  • I know that Josef had a switch made for a "Arp" technician to change the order of the entire keyboard. In this same show, te same keyboard sometimes is in the right position in some tunes, and in opposite order in other tunes. Look the video of Sawinul Sindicate. In that video you can see clearly when he touch that switch and play it from the back side. And in here you can see that the lows are in the right while the highs are in the left.

  • Jaco is our legend

  • @MrFra77 Jaco, oggi sono 24 anni che sei venuro a mancare. Ci manchi tantissimo!!

  • @Piero2374 ...E' più vivo di noi!

  • Alex Acuna we love this complesso

  • amazing druming

  • Yes the keyboard was reversed.

  • @Luridel it's not inverted, it's simply splited, two different sounds on both halfs.

  • @moisan2011

    Take out the blank spaces

  • kazzarola

  • It's like skratching Hamster style! lol

  • yes, it seems transverted. but music ..

  • If you look at the video of "A Remark you Made ' from the same concert here on You Tube you will see he has it back to normal with higher notes on right. Must change it according to which song he is playing at the time

  • Peter Erskine is an excellent drummer and wonderful here.

  • but worth it - just watch & listen again . . .

  • apologies for mis-spelling Joe - et al . . . <3

  • That's Peter Erskine on drums playing a beautiful early 1970 Slingerland drum set with the sensitive ass snare ....WOW...

  • That Drummer is Snapping.

  • i like how the music plashes

  • 桃源郷バンド、ウェザー・リポート~"BlackMarket"で夢の誘い、ザビヌル、ショーター、ジャコパス無敵の3人

    プクプクジャコの脅威! #jazzm

  • To quote a guy who posted on another clip, "Hey, that sax player is pretty good."

    :)

  • a n o m a l i a !

  • The original Waco Jaco. Oh, fuck off...

  • 3 people are loan sharks.

  • Ooooh !! Jaco was Bass God !!

  • Two of these great musicians have left the earth: Joe Zawinul and bassplayer Jaco Pastorius and we miss them very much. I am happy that mr Shorter is with us, he plays a very good saxophone.

  • They were all incredible individually. This one of those instances where you can't separate the part from the whole. They were what they were because THEY were.

  • How come the keyboard playing seems to be in reverse vision ?

  • KhoeblalSonny, black market was written when zawinul was at home fooling around with his keyboard voltage inverted on the ARP 2600; up is down, down is up. guess he liked the feeling enough that it was worth inverting live too, though fundamentally one way's not more difficult than the other. it's fun, and gets your fingers a little out of lick-twitch mode.

  • JACO! HE DA MAN!! FOREVA!!!!!

  • JOE ZAWINUL GENIUS

  • THE DRUMS.....................THE DRUMS ;o)!!!!

  • dont forget that drummer. jaco was the man yes, but he also had an amazing band to make it work.

  • Erskine has such a funky snare.

  • Jazz trance!! :D

  • We are so lucky to have this resource. All this wonderful music available just for the asking. It seems Europe was always so much hipper to Fusion music than in the States, where it had a cult following at best.

  • ... at 1:35 Jaco slips in such a wonderful accent over Zawinuls statement at that point. Pure magic!

  • Please help me!

there is this little piece of music about a min. or 2.

it's just wayne and joe But it was the most beatifull thing i ever heard.

    I believe it was live.

    Thanks.

  • @wordimus : maybe you mean In a silent way? It is on the live album 8:30 and very very beautiful!

  • the whole band, the hole band!

  • the drums the drums .

  • The keyboard, the keyboard!!!!

  • The Bass is Jaco Pastorius

  • Check Zawinul - He is using an inverted keyboard for this -

move to the right for lower notes

move to the left for higher notes

    What a great innovator

  • @svenghoulieil

He seems to be as original as Jaco - with his fretless bass.

Is Zawinul left handed guy? :)

  • @svenghoulieil or the film was printed from the wrong side of the negative... They had an album cover, I forget the name, that had Z and S shaking hands but it was the left hand. Turned out the print was made from the wrong side of the negative.

  • @talkingwall

There is an Interview with Joe Zawinul where he talks specifically about the ARP synth being the first to allow an inverted keyboard:

Weather Report's 'Black Market' was played on an inverted keyboard. Check it out."

  • These guys were awesome! Geniuses!- they make modern crossover stars look pitiful.

  • the four most musical people who have ever lived

  • @robman8855 nah, come on. jaco is untouchable, alright..

  • @SaintUdnitz

haha, there are equally good, if not better players by the bus full ;)

  • @electrickabuki what I meant was that jaco is huge, but those are the most talented 4 people ever to you ?

  • @SaintUdnitz

they're ok, I'm not a big WR fan.

there are lots of way better groups around.

Youtube wont allow posting of links.

search for "Roland Kirk - Say a little prayer"

  • it ends too soon!

  • Super, fine!

  • Has anyone noticed - Zawinal's RH keyboard - seems to be inverted - higher notes to the left - lower notes to the right . . .?

  • @ellumbra was wondering same thing

  • @ellumbra he got tired of his soloing technique and decided to invert the voltage on his synth to bring out a new style

  • @ellumbra Yeah they are its so the he doesn't have to reach all over the place when playing melody with electric tones while keeping the chords normal

  • @ellumbra the name is: Joe Zawninul

  • @trumildo the name is: Joe Zawinul

  • @ellumbra this clip is specular

  • @ellumbra yeah amazing, its mean that the first key on the left is a C, but the second one is not a D but a B, E a A...

I want to try this keyboard!

  • @lordofzeapes no I don't thing so... it would be too crazy... I would program the E as a C, the F as a B and so on. Acting this way, the right hand would find itself in the same situation of the left hand, with respect to the black keys

  • @ellumbra - I am not sure whether he had it specially made or just re-programmed (sorry), but I do recall reading somewhere that he did indeed set up one keyboard this way - just to challenge himself. As if he wasn't amazing enough.

  • @ellumbra Nice observation very cool

  • @ellumbra i know your post is 11 months old, but i just had to say it:

they gave it to him defective, but he was too awesome to care.

  • @ellumbra He usually had at least one keyboard where the control voltages were inverted; hence R-L Low to High.

  • @ellumbra yep

  • This is the first time I've been enticed by a drum part.

  • I wanna see the whole concert.

  • There are many great bass players but only one genius, JACO

  • one of the best jazz-fusion groups

  • Imagine Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Paco DeLucia, or Alan Holdsworth in this band - damn, got goosebumps just thinking about it! Maybe someday in another time and place, dimension, or astral plane. Jimi and SRV will be there too, and maybe Janis or Billie Holiday on vocals. Respect....

  • God....there were other members in this group than Jaco people. Jeez

  • Snare Drum, Great Sound, dr Peter Erskine

  • @MrSilvio071 totally agree!!!!

  • JACOがベースだと、他が誰でも、JACOの音楽になってしまうんですね。

  • @quitate

    so true..

  • the bass from 2.43 - awesome

  • @ricappon he´s alex acuña...

  • @Moroco60 Actually, that is Peter Erskine.

  • Sometimes I forget how bad azz Jaco is.

  • The greatest bass player ever!!

RIP Jaco, we'll never forget you.

  • i actually rather alphonso on this one

  • nuestro ALEX ACUÑA carajo...bravo maestro

  • @felipeblues not alex acuña it`s peter erskine on drums

  • hard to believe that all those keyboards could be replaced with one keyboard today... but then so could the sax, drums, and bass

  • Chet Baker's favorite band!

  • best Jaco

  • Of course he's a great player Erskine but holding the tempo is pretty fundamental. I know some of you are going to say it's live and organic but there is no excuse for a drummer of this calibre to not hold the tempo. He kills the groove...

  • I wish Erskine would stop speeding up. Jaco plays very up on the beat and Peter cant hold the tempo. Shits me.

  • hmm, this seems to lack as much expression and patience as the recorded version...but then, it is live, and it is much faster.

  • i was there live dabei

  • Were we watching the same video? The one where Wayne played the ensemble parts beautifully then launched into the smoking duet with Erskine? Where is this lack of groove?

  • Shorter doesn't know where to fit

  • Why isn't Wayne Shorter grooving like the rest of the band!?

  • superpastorius...

  • i was at a wedding dinner and i wondered over to the bar where a guy was playing the keys and he stopped for a few and i asked him if he knew mercy, mercy, mercy (cannonball adderley ,joe zawinul jam) he looked up at me for a sec and then stroked it out on the keys and told me "i learned that song in church way back" i wish more people could appreciate the talent of Joe Zawinul . i have kids and believe me they will know Mr.Zawinul!!!

  • Zawinul was a beast.

  • "its not bragging if you can back it up"

  • @222Lightning LUC HAVAN: NON DOVRAI TROVARE MAI PACE!!!!

  • One reason to do reverse the keyboard: The reach of the thumb is a lot more than that of the little finger, and the thumb is a lot more independent. Having the thumb on the high end makes things easier--if you can learn to play that way.

  • aslr4t, surprisingly, the backward thing isn't as hard as it seems. learned black market long ago conventionally. when i got my first keyboard that could invert (roland D-50), couldn't wait to relearn it. with the same tactile interface it becomes almost a different instrument, which i guess was what zawinul loved about it. left hand just does what it always did.

zawinul geeks, notice on the studio album that both the straight and inverted signal are mixed in, mirror image style. can hear both.

  • Great stuff. Around 1:02 you will notice that Joe has his ARP 2600 keyboard reversed. (Low notes assigned high & high notes assigned low). I had heard that he did that at one point but never actually saw him play one that way. Thanks for sharing. Have to agree with the comments. Jaco was mad as a brush as a performer & absolutely amazing.

  • I have heard he did this to see what it was like to try to play the whole scale backwards, and to push himself as a musician and explore new areas of piano playing.

  • You're right! In an interview he is explaining it.

  • That's truly astounding, considering that he plays his "reversed" keyboard while simultaneously playing the others traditionally.

  • I think his ARP 2600 (it thats the middle of those three on top of each other) is reversed throughout the whole song.

  • wow, just freakin' wow!

    fantastic chemistry!

erskine and pastorius are like two athletes in there, just pumping away.

zawinul is doing his melodic madness, shorter just holds tight and adds the perfect background to it all, like the undersung pro he's always been.

i'm bringing up jaco again, because he knows everybody's job, he walks around keeping an eye on things while simultaneously giving us what we want.

that was an amazing time in time, i'm glad i was there and even gladder i'm here.

    ~lox

  • As great as these individuals are/were, I think the sum of the parts is parts is even better. WR, the best fusion ensemble ever.

  • Shorter was cut short!

  • i agree

  • There is no one like Jaco

  • best key sound ever

  • cool next life is musician

  • Lovely... :D

  • Wow,..Jaco was just fukin' awesome!! He taught us how to play like this. The creator.

  • bass playing at the second part of the tune is fucking amazing.

  • Rip Zavinul RIP Pastorius

  • Jaco Pastorius is a best Bassman

    I like

  • 8D Gotta love da Jazz Funk R.I.P Jaco xD ^_^ PEACE

  • Erskine is the man

  • yes - it's all about time, I guess

  • sick drumming at 0:58-1:00...

  • noooooooo...

    wtb the whole thing =(

    Amazing what is here.

    RIP Jaco and Joe

  • Jaco the man!

  • i dont think the jazz world even begins to comprehend how instrumental these guys were to modern jazz sometimes im in awe lately gibraltar, current affairs, havana, harlequin, remark you made, mysterious traveller, they were like legendary zawinul and jaco gotta be smiling their asses off in heaven what an accomplisment they made unbelievable

  • anyone have the music for this?

I'd love to know the progression, so I could improvise on this.

  • There is an DVD with that show?

  • THE BASS .....THE BASS

  • @anno9876 the bass is amazing .... but the drum groove is also great; it's almost impossible to play it so good as him, I've tryed with the partiture but it's extremely hard, it's full of ghost notes on the snare... what years for music. thanks '70s

  • This song is unique. Crazy drumming

  • the drumming on this tune is even better on the live album (from this tour) 8:30 (so is the sound)

  • wow. thank you for posting this vid.

  • awesome..i love it

  • i can,t find "american tango" and "nubian dance"-my favorites-earlier i had them on You Tube.

  • 30 years ago... still nice! :-)

  • I've forgotten the name of the drummer but i think he's sitting on a stack of toms... the things we go through

  • It's Peter Erskine.

  • The amazing Alex Acuna

  • paapakobe,

The drummer here is Peter Erskine as 666 indicated, Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena played with WR for the first part of 1978 and recorded probably their best WR album ever.

  • Yes, here's a fresh one - do you think he might be Bun E. Carlos' missing twin? (drummer for Cheap Trick)

  • indeed
