@jode72 Nope. Eight people think this overrated, druggy hack, is only famous because he played bass solo and died at a young age. "Cliff Burton roolz" anyone? Same idol worshiping crap, different genre.
That riff at 2:40 blows my mind! So beautiful, yet tense at the same time! I'm not even a huge fan of this fusion style, but you can't deny good music when you hear it! Nice...
I know that Josef had a switch made for a "Arp" technician to change the order of the entire keyboard. In this same show, te same keyboard sometimes is in the right position in some tunes, and in opposite order in other tunes. Look the video of Sawinul Sindicate. In that video you can see clearly when he touch that switch and play it from the back side. And in here you can see that the lows are in the right while the highs are in the left.
If you look at the video of "A Remark you Made ' from the same concert here on You Tube you will see he has it back to normal with higher notes on right. Must change it according to which song he is playing at the time
Two of these great musicians have left the earth: Joe Zawinul and bassplayer Jaco Pastorius and we miss them very much. I am happy that mr Shorter is with us, he plays a very good saxophone.
They were all incredible individually. This one of those instances where you can't separate the part from the whole. They were what they were because THEY were.
KhoeblalSonny, black market was written when zawinul was at home fooling around with his keyboard voltage inverted on the ARP 2600; up is down, down is up. guess he liked the feeling enough that it was worth inverting live too, though fundamentally one way's not more difficult than the other. it's fun, and gets your fingers a little out of lick-twitch mode.
We are so lucky to have this resource. All this wonderful music available just for the asking. It seems Europe was always so much hipper to Fusion music than in the States, where it had a cult following at best.
@svenghoulieil or the film was printed from the wrong side of the negative... They had an album cover, I forget the name, that had Z and S shaking hands but it was the left hand. Turned out the print was made from the wrong side of the negative.
@ellumbra Yeah they are its so the he doesn't have to reach all over the place when playing melody with electric tones while keeping the chords normal
@lordofzeapes no I don't thing so... it would be too crazy... I would program the E as a C, the F as a B and so on. Acting this way, the right hand would find itself in the same situation of the left hand, with respect to the black keys
@ellumbra - I am not sure whether he had it specially made or just re-programmed (sorry), but I do recall reading somewhere that he did indeed set up one keyboard this way - just to challenge himself. As if he wasn't amazing enough.
Imagine Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Paco DeLucia, or Alan Holdsworth in this band - damn, got goosebumps just thinking about it! Maybe someday in another time and place, dimension, or astral plane. Jimi and SRV will be there too, and maybe Janis or Billie Holiday on vocals. Respect....
Of course he's a great player Erskine but holding the tempo is pretty fundamental. I know some of you are going to say it's live and organic but there is no excuse for a drummer of this calibre to not hold the tempo. He kills the groove...
Were we watching the same video? The one where Wayne played the ensemble parts beautifully then launched into the smoking duet with Erskine? Where is this lack of groove?
i was at a wedding dinner and i wondered over to the bar where a guy was playing the keys and he stopped for a few and i asked him if he knew mercy, mercy, mercy (cannonball adderley ,joe zawinul jam) he looked up at me for a sec and then stroked it out on the keys and told me "i learned that song in church way back" i wish more people could appreciate the talent of Joe Zawinul . i have kids and believe me they will know Mr.Zawinul!!!
One reason to do reverse the keyboard: The reach of the thumb is a lot more than that of the little finger, and the thumb is a lot more independent. Having the thumb on the high end makes things easier--if you can learn to play that way.
aslr4t, surprisingly, the backward thing isn't as hard as it seems. learned black market long ago conventionally. when i got my first keyboard that could invert (roland D-50), couldn't wait to relearn it. with the same tactile interface it becomes almost a different instrument, which i guess was what zawinul loved about it. left hand just does what it always did.
zawinul geeks, notice on the studio album that both the straight and inverted signal are mixed in, mirror image style. can hear both.
Great stuff. Around 1:02 you will notice that Joe has his ARP 2600 keyboard reversed. (Low notes assigned high & high notes assigned low). I had heard that he did that at one point but never actually saw him play one that way. Thanks for sharing. Have to agree with the comments. Jaco was mad as a brush as a performer & absolutely amazing.
I have heard he did this to see what it was like to try to play the whole scale backwards, and to push himself as a musician and explore new areas of piano playing.
