  • I have seen a lot of videos lessons on you tube but I got to say that you are the best teacher I have run across. The way you lay out the lesson even I can understand it. I was able to play it within two to three hours and it sound great. My question is, when are you going to put the second part on you tube?

Keep up the great work because you are making a lot of people a better guitar player.

  • Awesome!! Great job! Love the way you broke it down!

  • hey garry , nice work ... capo on 2nd fret and you'll have James in 1970 , more original sound ... check it out

  • 10 people obviously have no emothions at all.

  • @ArchiePerry1 you spelled emotions wrong lol. i dont care though. probably just a typo

  • This is a really good tutorial, thank for doing such a great teaching job! :)

  • Nice guitar sound, good singing too. What kind of strings did you use for this lesson?

  • hilarious at the start xD

  • great intro, way to improvise on the words. I was singing along and i almost forgot the words too.

  • great intro, way to improvise on the words. I was singing along and i almost forgot the words too

  • I have played guitar for 47 years but just could not get the intro to this song right. I have it right now. Thanks Garry!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i enjoyed that

  • It that a Taylor 114 your playing? are you uesing the built in pick up?

  • Thanks this is great! I wish you could put the whole song up though..

  • truthfully i think the song sounds better with i just cant remember the words after thirty years

  • Thanks a lot man, I learned to play Fire and Rain from this video about a year ago and now it is my signature piece for guitar. Every time I see my in-laws they beg me to play!

  • im getting it kinda ill come back lol soooo hard

  • Gary, you are simply fantastic. What a wonderful you have my man, thanks. Bless you.

  • @spavlic Taylor 714ce. I have one.

  • GREAT JOB

  • Great video, great performance!

  • Hi Gary, I have been playing since I was a teenager in the 1970's. My two sons who are now teenagers have picked up the guitar and so I have returned myself. Your vids have made that relationship with them that much richer. Thanks for that gift brother!

  • Do you have a DVD with instruction on the whole song??

  • Hey man, thanks for posting this. I got the feel of the whole song from this. Great work. I'm gonna play it tomorrow night.

  • Great voice and picking! Great you can laugh at yourslef a bit too! Thanks for the post buddy! Dave the guitar guy

  • Great lesson, I wish you would do the rest of the song! I struggle with reading tabs and correlating them with the rhythm of the notes. Great lesson tho, 100% better than all the rest!

  • Comment removed

  • great job on the lesson !

  • good lesson ;), but you could have said that last bit, a bit slower .. 6.4.3.2.6.4.6.1.6.2.6.3.6.2.3 i had to get a pen and paper out and listen to it twice to get that =) lol. kind regards george

  • Great playing my friend and you sing really well also! I play this tune too and even after 30 years I forget the words too!

  • Best teacher ever, fire and rain superb. Jone Kvinge Stavanger Norway

  • great lesson, you are a star.. cheers.

  • r u using an amp to emphasize the sound of the guitar

  • Good teacher! thank from Italy

  • This is great. I have wanted to play this forever and you are the most patient, methodical, accurate instructor I have ever seen. Thanks! Do more Neil Young, James Taylor, etc.

  • I really wish you did more videos. Nobody else has the patience and detail in their breakdowns, coupled with the best overall closeup of the guitar showing both sides. I have wanted to learn James Taylor and Neil Young my whole life but no-one could teach this like you. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

  • your lessons are great! just finished learning your here comes the sun lesson. started working on this one. really bummed that its only the intro though.

  • @fenderfreak07 Once you have the intro down the rest is pretty much the same but less frilly!

  • @oldbloke135 oh gotcha!

    thank you!

  • love this song. The tabs are all a crazy mess and you broke it down really well. Thanks a bunch, great video

  • is that you ricky bobby?

  • Thanks for the lesson. You made it easy to learn a difficult intro.

  • very good.

See folks you don't need leather pants and a head band to be cool

  • best teacher

  • hey garry great video you should learn how to play alright by darius rucker! i would love how to learn how to play that song thanks!

  • very nice paced instructional video.

  • how are you signing if you don't have a head?

  • His right on that A chord thing, I got that from a Mel-Bay book long ago LOL.

But you really need to play it the other way as well and with just your first finger alone.

Great playing thanks for sharing, a great song

i forget words too, I didn't forget them 30 years ago LOL

  • Very good but agonizingly drawn out. I ain't complaining, just saying. I surely appreciate the lesson, but if somebody needs that much hand-holding and instruction they're probably not ready to play this song. It's actually quite simple once the CAPO and chords are revealed. Thanks again. Your video is head-and-shoulders above 90% of the other lessons for this song (on youtube).

  • @garythemessage - good comment - this is a great lesson but a bit 'laboured' for the more experienced player

  • Thanks Gary, big help for me as a beginner.

  • I just can't remember the words after 30 years .............hahahah

  • great lesson. helped me alot. But may i suggest to anyone having trouble with the D chord lick to A chord change at about 4 minutes into the lesson. You dont have to even worry about holding down the 4th string on the A chord. I just use my first two fingers on the 2nd and 3rd string while hitting the 5th string. Its the last note in the riff. Its much easier to finger it this way and ur still playing all the same notes the way he teaches it

  • Just beginning to play, so here is basic question: what key is this in, given that the capo is on the third fret?

  • Great song and great teaching...And yes could teach the rest of the song,,or just a video of the song so we can work it out....Thanks mate

  • if you could teach the rest of the song, it would be appreciated. i've looked for other lessons, and they don't even play the intro right.

  • Garry,

How about a lesson for Poke Salad Annie? TJW is a fellow "Swamp Rat"!

  • This lesson was unreal. Thanks a lot man it sounded great.

  • hey man i like your video do you think you could cover the rest though all the other fire and rain videos suck.

  • this fag sucks hes using the wrong.

  • thats really good, it helped a lot

  • spot on man thank you !!

  • You make it looks so easy. Practice pays off. Great teaching.

    Thank you.

  • Great Job, Great quality, Great teaching, and great song

  • I've been playing guitar for a little over 40 years, but it comes as something of a shock to learn that I've been playing this wrong for so many of those years. You, sir, are a star - with or without your head. Keep up the good work, and thanks.

  • Insanely good mate ;) Awesome lesson, keep up the good work and thanks a lot:!

  • thanks alot, huge help

  • This is a really brilliantly clear exposition of quite a tricky piece. The beauty of it is we can play it over and over. Sound and speech quality is superb.

  • You are an excellent player/teacher. Thanks and keep posting.

  • is it better to have long or short nails for fingerpicking? does it matter how long your nails are?

  • It's really a matter of personal preference, finger picking without fingernails leads to a softer tone, whereas growing your fingernails long enough that you can use them to pick creates a brighter tones as if you're using an actual guitar pick. As for length, long enough that you can consistently pick with them, so, whatever makes you comfortable with your playing as well as personal life. Be prepared to have people look at you funny until you tell them you use them for playing guitar. :P

  • Hey that's great! Thank you

  • are you tuned down a half step? or is it normal tuning?

  • normal tuning juz capo on the third fret

  • thanks for the vid

  • Great job my friend!!! I will work on it. Looks like alot of fun to play. Thanks man.

    VITTO

  • oh rly?

  • @TheFlgator15 you so cool faggot

  • Great video broski

  • Awesome! Thanks bro! ;-)

    (Another girl magnet song)

My friends tell me they get lucky when they bring dates over and I play "Sweetie" songs.

  • hey your are amazing at guitar and teach, could you please do a tutorial for steamroller by james taylor, it would really be appreciated, thanks.

  • Great job Garry ! Too bad you forgot the words - I wanted to hear the rest of the song . Don't feel bad after 30 years goes by I forget almost everything :)

Any plans on teaching the rest of the song (chorus etc) at some point ?

  • This is kind of a comment on everything--I don't know whether you are inspiring or discouraging!! Awesome!

  • Thank you so much for sharing your passion and talent! You and your lessons are so appreciated!

  • great tutorial. cheers.

  • Just found this vid, and subscribed immediately!!!! I love this song. Just got my first Taylor, and love the sound of the Taylor, and it's so perfect for this song. Thanks very much !!

  • this is perfect, thankyou so much

  • wow dude.. you play with the guitar on your left leg

  • got a taylor?

  • I do!!:)

  • best tutorial i have found :) you rock man!

  • I wish I could play a guitar.

  • Great teaching! A+

  • I have yet to check out your other songs. But you are probably the most clear and easy to follow out of all of youtube. I'm still workin on this intro, but it wont be long. thanks

  • 6 3 6 2 6 4 6 2 5 2 .......3. lmao (8:10)

  • wow u actually sound like james taylor when u sing

  • you're a great teacher! Thanks for understanding what beginning guitarists need.

  • I decided to subscribe to your vids after watching this tutorial. It's rather obvious that you know how to break down a piece into easily digestible segments better than the other tutorials I have seen. I was able to pick-up this intro rather quickly (not that it's smooth ... but I was able to commit the fingerings to memory). Great job! Definitely 5 stars! Will be examining the rest of your vids.

  • wow...... you sound exactly like him and you pluck like a master. Is it harder to play this with a pic???

  • Excellent Garry. Thanks for this. This is the best lesson I've seen for Fire & Rain.

    Al.

  • thankyouu so much man, greatt lesson.

    Thanks

  • One of my favorites, 5*****`s for the lesson I play it but in a different way, but watching your vid maybe I can straighten my version out a little better. Thanks & have a good day, E.J.Moore

  • Really, great lesson!! I'm Firing and Raining already!!! Thank you soo much. You and guys like you make life for guys like us so much easier!!

  • Another great lesson.

We just hope that you can spend some more time to teach the complete song. Intro is not very useful by itself alone.

    Thanks...

  • Very nice job 6/5

  • Very nice lesson-great song and |I love the tone of your guitar

  • very helpful. thanks a lot.

  • 01:48

"pluck string 3 and 6 together"

Is he using the index finger to pluck string 3? Or the middle finger?

  • 01:39

Is it best to always use the right hand ring finger to pluck the first string in this song?

The ring finger feels weaker than the index and middle...

  • I never have commented on these posts before however, you are a tremendous talent as you make each lesson so easy to followthanks from all of us.

  • Great lesson! but I agree with Ryancezz227. This intro is teasing me without knowing the rest of the song. Can you PLEASE do a part 2 explaining the rest of the song. Thanks

  • Hey there Garry! This is f'n amazing... you should sell the video lessons on your website... I would totally but a video lesson for this song!! and many of your others!

  • @mikesheezy07 he doesnt need to charge i aint got money for that
