I don't understand how people think that tricking a fish with artificial bait from the comfort of their boat is more noble than spearfishing. I consider spearfishing one of the most noble forms of fishing, since the hunter also endangers himself to catch his prey.

well you guys... My name is Robert Arrington and I speared the fish myself. Not sorry in the least bit about it! I'd challenge any one of you to go hoop in the water 25 miles off the coast of Panama/Columbia and spearfish by yourself.... I've been in and around the water my whole life and that marlin was one of the most intimidating fish I've ever seen. Ya I speared it but I've caught as an angler numerous Blue and Black marlin and as a captain I've put countless people on their fist billfish!

I'm a keen recreational angler, and fish for both fun and for food, releasing any fish not kept to eat. One reason I DON'T spearfish is that "spear & release" is not an option. Given that marlin are rated as "pretty ordinary" on the plate, high levels of mercury etc.. is the killing of this fish really justified? I don't accept the "self defence" plea, given that the diver could have just left the water at any time- an option the Marlin didn't have...

People who go on spearfishing trips kill several top predator animals that are already threatened, so the idea that only a couple hundred fish are killed is, put simply, wrong. Spearfishing is fine but killing a marlin, through any means, is unsustainable and should be discontinued...

Cornering a bait ball in a boat, jumping in with a double band gun and shooting a hunting billfish SHOULD be illegal, in the US and everywhere. using a lure at least requires a tactic, a presentation, finessing a fish to the boat on thin line. I myself have caught a few 190+lb sailfish this way, and can call myself a sportsman. you are a poser, and you should pawn your speargun to buy some fishing tackle.

@johny71 Big difference between cows and marlin. The marlin is threatened, while domesticated animals are used for food and won't likely ever go extinct. People who go on spearfishing trips kill several top predator animals that are already threatened, so the idea that only a couple hundred fish are killed is, put simply, wrong. Spearfishing is fine but killing a marlin, through any means, is unsustainable and should be discontinued...

@johny71 Commercial fishing is absolutely responsible for the destruction of most fish stocks. Spearfishing these threatened animals still does not help the stocks and depletes them locally. Protecting these animals from all forms of fishing gives them the best shot at recovery. It's similar to hunting bison; if I was in charge of conserving bison in the early 1900's, I would understand that most bison were killed off by Europeans acting unsustainably...

That method of conservation would give the bison a fighting chance at a full recovery. Concerning prey fish being depleted, there is a National Geographic article concerning the overpopulation of small fish in the ocean. It turns out that the overfishing of large fish has caused a trophic cascade, allowing prey fish to grow uncontrolled

@johny71 People shouldn't use the sustainable nature of spearfishing as an excuse to kill marlin. Marlin, some tuna, sharks and other top predators should be protected from harvesting. 90% of these fish are gone, and most stocks of fish are set to collapse by 2048 if sustainable fishing is not established. To Robert, thumbs down. If you really had respect for the outdoors, you would have left that fish alone. Respect the outdoors by scuba diving instead of killing.

Spearfishing is by far the most sustanable form of fishing there is. And "not a sport?" Obviously said by one who has never had the balls to try it. How sportsman like is sitting in the safety of a boat and catching one of these awesome things? @RobertArrington you can't call yourself a show host or even a sportsman. Cornering a bait ball in a boat, jumping in with a double band gun and shooting a hunting billfish SHOULD be illegal, in the US and everywhere. using a lure at least requires a tactic, a presentation, finessing a fish to the boat on thin line. I myself have caught a few 190+lb sailfish this way, and can call myself a sportsman. you are a poser, and you should pawn your speargun to buy some fishing tackle.
