  • That line looks like a lawn mower needs to go down it because of all the grass growing on it near that cantilever.

Also why does that line look like it hasn't been used in years if that was the twelve train of the day?

  • @Trainking922 The line hasn't been used in years, years ago between the 60's & 70's the Seaboard Coast Line railroad operated this line, until it became CSX in the 80's & abandoned the line in 1989. The Georgia Department of Transportation bought the line & leased it to the Heart Of Georgia Railroad to operate & the line reopen in 1999, to the Heart of Georgia railroad. Hope that helps :)

  • Thats the sam short line!!!!!!!!

  • I wish it would run thru to Vidalia/Lyons. Would make for a nice long ride.

  • @ACLTony Done that before long ride 6 hrs

  • @georgiacentralfan - Thanks for your response!. Does this train run to Vidalia regularly or was your trip a railfan special? Also, when you rode to Vidalia/Lyons what speeds did your train run? I understand that back in the day trains on the Central of Georgia and Seaboard Air Line ran at some pretty good speeds.

  • @ACLTony They used to come to Vidalia every 3 months, but they can't know because of their track conditions(rebuild in progress). The only time they go through Lyons is if they are going to Savannah. The only time I've ridden to Vidalia from Lyons was on GC about 6 years ago

  • @georgiacentralfan - Good news that the line is being rebuilt! I visit the Lyons area a long while back and stayed several days. Saw a daily local westbound freight, usually during the 5pm hour. Ran slowly at about 10mph. I hope speed and traffic increase on that line. I'll email the SAM/HOG and ask when they plan on running a tourist/passenger run through that area again. I was saddened that the beautiful depot in Vidalia was torn down. IMHO, that was criminal.

  • Awesome, private passenger railroad company? No Amtrak?

  • No Amtrak down there. This is privately owned but open to the public to ride. They got dinner trains, lunch trains, Christmas trains, etc. You can google Sam Shortline and the website should come up.
