I find it interesting how you use your thumb as a pick. Very unique, there's nothing wrong with different technique. If you ever get the chance, check out Victor Wooten. He, in my opinion, is the most talented and most technically advanced bassist I have ever heard of. OUTSTANDING composer. He does a fusion of jazz, funk, and bluegrass. He has a really interesting slap style (one that I am adapting along with Les Claypool's, another bass idol of mine, lol).
@Kizales Actually, I only use my thumb as a pick for the riff/song that I thought of while listening to my best friend's drawn-out bullshit drama conversation with his girlfriend.
Otherwise, every other riff (aside from the tap-triplets/sextuplets at the end clip) was performed with a Clayton 0.63mm triangular pick.
Less Claypool fucking rules, no mystery.
Are you familiar with the works of Christopher Squire (of Yes)? He is one of my inspirations. One of the biggest, actually.
@RantingRamsay Yeah, my mistake, I noticed that you were using a pick after I made that comment, haha. The sound gave it away, as well, since picks give a more crisp tone rather than the warmth of using fingers (INNUENDO, HAH!)
Les Claypool is the man. Primus is never afraid to exile themselves from the norm and just make a wacky, quirky sound that is so original that they are practically a genre on their own! The Brown Album is my favorite, lol.
@Kizales Check out "Roundabout" by Yes. Squire's talents really shine through in that one. Probably one of the pieces that really inspired me to pick up a bass.
Don't let him fool you, He smokes a cigarette and shares it with his bass guitar all the time. He starts smoking on a cig then later he just sticks his smoke in between the strings at the head of the guitar.
I'm not saying this just because but I've always had a fascination with bass lines. Even as a kid I would normally pick them out first from out of the background of songs. Rockin' stuff, man! \m/>_<\m/
I enjoyed the Death Song. Nice country-ish vibe to certain parts of it. Great job overall, you are now officially an inspiration as I look to get back into the wonderful world of low-end...
@PedroBenolielBonito Right on, and thanks. A lot of the stuff I play around with tends to be very melodic and/or harmonic when I'm playing without other musicians, because I rarely hear single-note lines in my head, and like to hear the full sound.
I write more "traditional" metal-style basslines when I turn on FLStudio9 and load up a pre-created drum loop, or one that I have pieced together myself hit play, and play along with that.
@RantingRamsay Well I'm more of a punk bassist, both because I'm not that good and because I like strong, simple, solid bass lines. However I also enjoy musicians like Mike Dirnt (back when he could play) or Steve Harris, who build more complex basslines. But usually when I compose, I am thinking of the song's melody as a whole, not just the bass part. Usually the songs come into my head in quasi-finished prototype form, and all I have to do is find the notes and tweak the whole thing a bit.
@ZurkonTheDestroyer You should see me when I've actually had time to practice 15-25 hours a week. *chuckle* But enough of my lack of modesty; Thanks. :)
@leotab21 Nah, it was sitting in an ashtray on the desk in front of me. There's just an open window to my left (right side of the video) that was carrying the smoke past the camera.
@CasinAandC Well, attempting to uphold some semblance of modesty, I'm pretty fuckin' sic "in my prime", which may be a time coming again soon, as a long-time friend and fellow musician just tonight proposed embarking upon a djent studio-project, and I responded enthusiastically. Hopefully, we'll have something to show for it in a few month's time.
@darisinggamer oh no, those aren't lies. *chuckle* I am indeed VERY out of practice.
A lot of those cuts took multiple takes before it had few enough mistakes that I was "happy" with it.
In my "prime" (with my hitherto unnamed band of 8-years time) I was known as the "1-take King" in the studio, usually only needing a single take to record a perfect bass-line from song-start to song-finish.
PM me here on Youtube and I just might link you to some archived video footage... ;)
@SaberX1138 Thank you kindly. I appreciate the praise.
Yes, that line always reminds me of Tool, which is why, I think, I've never used it. Another example; I refuse to cover any Tool song (though I can play many) because I respect them so much I would consider it an affront on their music to attempt to emulate it.
All you need to play the bass well is a sense of timing and practice. With those two things you can learn to play even better than me... and I think I suck! lol.
@Zeon707 Yes, the second half of the first riff I played has always reminded me of Tool. I've always liked their music, and so I guess it is no mystery that their style/influence would creep into my own playing. :)
That was pretty badass, Ramsay. I really enjoyed watching that. I find it highly interesting to hear how other people play, though I still have no idea how to finger tap. I find it highly confusing and.. I don't quite understand the technique for it, as well as, sloppy finger picking and slow transition between notes on more advanced songs, like some In Flames or some Pearl Jam songs. :/ Practice makes perfect, I guess.
Finger tapping isn't "hard", really, just takes timing and dexterity. The real trick is learning to get the index finger on your right hand to land exactly where you want it, which can be difficult because typically the right hand only has to worry about vertical placement, not horizontal.
@MGOPantallica I've pondered using it in some way like that a few times, but still haven't come up with anything I've been happy enough with to utilize.
@RantingRamsay I see it as a break, in maybe a prog-death-thrash song. Kind of chaos suddenly falling into that one bass melody sort of thing, you know?
@JohnathenDavis To be honest, I'm not sure. They're the standard factory pickups that come with the Ibanez GSR205BK that I was playing.
To continue the honesty, I've never been that in-depth with my bass-buying. Usually, when I pick up a new axe, I play around with what's available until I find something that sounds good. I don't think about modifying it, I just take it for what it is.
A few of my musician friends give me shit for that, but I stand by my methods. *chuckle*
WOO! LAMB OF (MOTHER FUCKING) GOD! YEEEAHHHHH! \m/ ... Fuck they were good with Metallica...
Maybes you could "invest" in a cable/setup to hook your bass up to your PC and record it? The volume was actually fairly good mate, sounded pretty wicked too. The bass made my mouse move about the screen xD
... If this is you when you haven't been practicing much... Wow.
*glances at time* i really should be logging but I will watch anyways...
I remember your bass solo from your very first Live Show. Really liked your playing for being out for so long, and it gave me a few ideas to work with as well, so thank you. I have a funny feeling tomorrow I will be doing improv over your playing.
I really think we should sit down and just talk about music during a live show one of these days, lol. We have a bit of a differing views as far as taste goes but...yeah.
