It seems a trend on here for weak people to talk about strong people. IE critiquing musicians. Is this what computers are for? Jealous people venting in an anonymous way. ha ha Just watch and shut up!
Well said...there is far tooooooooooo much these days of "if I don't like the player, approach or style...the position of asshole and critique ensues based on perosnal taste/ preference.
Neither of these guys grab me on an emotional level based on my musical taste...but they are very, very, very fine players...I say judge the playing, not your personal likes and dislikes!!!
to alexsalinas32381...you are right...next to my own this is one of the best comment I've seen yet. Most people with negative comments cant play there instrument as good as they would like to. so they have a musical insecurity which causes them to vent. Youtub allows them oppourtunity to do so w/o never being seen or heard.... But you and I know ...like there comments....there playing is probaly not worth hearing either. Musicians hatin on other musicians is as bad as black on black crime.
I hear what you are saying but I don't agree that Weckl is playing more than what is called for. There is only a drummer and a bass player. They both have to fill out the space.
Incidentally, I think the 2 albums with the Akoustic band were his best playing. I don't mind what he is doing now with the new technique, but I feel it is definately not as musical as before he made Transition.
But that's the idea! Weckl is Weckl! He is not Krupa,Roach, Morello,Rich,Blakely,Jones (Take your pick)or Haynes. He is Dave Weckl. I like the fact that he has his Jazz roots but he is not playing everything Jazz lick that has been played already. That is the point of Jazz;to create something new. To do your own thing!
oh nonesense! they're both doing a great job. while dave may not be my favorite (not by a long shot) his playing is surgical. you can't say that he's not listening. that's just silly...
i agree i think both of these players are too busy for my liking but hey theyre very skilled players who are doing quite well for themselves all over the industry so what the hell do i know
i want to know one thing, why is there so many dave weckl haters.thats his style.if his swinging is so bad,why do musicians keep getting him to play on songs that he has to swing on.(fucking idiots)

But he hasn't played for anyone (significant!) that's the whole point!
He played for Chick Corea a couple of times, but Corea's just commercial jazz anyway.
Look at Gadd, he's played for everyone from Steely Dan to Wayne Shorter! Those guys have good ears, they really want something specific from their drummers: Groove!
Only played with Corea?? No groove??Actually Weckl has played on over 180 albums & with some pretty significant people for whom groove will have been fairly important e.g. Madonna, George Benson, Diana Ross, Dave Matthews, Simon and Garfunkel, Peabo Bryson, Arturo Sandoval, Natalie Cole, Dave Grusin, Barry Manilow, Brecker Bros, Mike Stern, Sade etc etc. Get your facts straight boy

Sorry, I haven't really followed his career. I just hear what I hear.
You argue stating Barry Manilow as pretty significant?! LOLOLOL Like who gives a shit about madonna?? And how many times has he played for the Breker bros?? Please...
I really cannot think of anything more disrespectful to say towards the MOUNTAIN of lesser known jazz musicians then to listen to the same old same old. Go and learn some history, but a couple of books about jazz musicians you've never heard of. Learn something new.
@givinitsome You should really do some research yourself, pal. Chick Corea has created some of the most pivotal jazz albums in history with some of its greatest drummers, including Roy Haynes, Lenny White, and Steve Gadd. And Dave Weckl has performed many, many times in many situations with both Brecker Brothers. I can't think of many things more disrespectful toward the art of jazz than to discredit the music Corea has given us in saying he is "just commercial jazz."
@givinitsome Frankly, I don't what you think I know. You said yourself you haven't followed Dave Weckl's career and yet you still claim he hasn't done anything significant. If Weckl's playing does not suit your tastes, that's fine, but until you've actually put in the time and effort it takes to study his contributions to music, you have no business making wild claims about his career and the people he's played with, especially those whose influence REMAINS as strong as Corea's.
agree totally. Weckl is an amazing drummer technique wise, but sometimes it seems as if he's in his own world. He doesnt seem to be listening and playing off of what Patitucci is doing.
I could listen to this all day! It's magic!

@liquidex648
He's become a much more "sparing player" of late and sounds much better for it IMHO...
I'd prefer to have seen Al Foster on this one as on the original cut..
...this being said DAVE CAN PLAAAYYYY!!!

Sounds to me, Weckl is improvising his fills with Jon P. trading 4's.

Sorry! Still Human!

Quite right he's not a Krupa, Roach, Rich, Blakey, Jones, or Haynes.
All those guys have one thing in common: Swing!
I think the others here are confusing the music that Weckl plays, with HOW he plays it. The former is clearly better than the latter.

Of course Dave Weckl listens to what's going out. He's one of my favourite drummers. Check out his electric band performances and his tuition DVD's.

@gdbdrummer I didn't say Chick has always been commercial. The pivotal recordings you speak of were a long time ago.
You've not shown me you know anything more than a limited range of musicians and recordings.

Weckl isn't all that bad....He's just too clinical about the whole thing, and he can't swing well.
