I enjoy most late 70s and early 80s punk but this band is way over hyped. Nothing real special here. Feel free to attack me fan boys but I don't see why I'd listen to this more than once.
@ahhhitsrob So you don't like it? Then piss off, nobody here gives a damn about your view on music, despite how righteous and unique and relevant you think it is.
@ahhhitsrob this part of their music isn't hyped it's their post punk that's hyped and it deserves to be both albums unknown pleasures and closer are two of the best albums for the last 30 years
@GamesFrontiers What's the connection with Rudolf Hess and this song? The real story is that it was Barney who yelled "You all forget Rudolf Hess!" before performing "At A Later Date" and the song about Rudolf Hess is "Warsaw".
Is it just me is there a nazi theme running through a lot of Joy Divisions material and imagery? From the band name, to album artwork to song titles like Warsaw. Not knocking it, just curious!
Clearly you didnt read what I said. Im sorry, I didnt realize Warsaw/Joy Division werent playing punk shows in 77-78 but they were playing "Joy Division" shows. You dont even know what youre saying. I never called them a typical punk band, the nazi imagery went along with the territory. Sex Pistols did it, New York Dolls did it, Siouxsie Sioux did it, and a whole mess of others. It was for shock value, what are you missing here?
@unfamous13 It was more than just shock value. Bernard Sumner and especially Ian Curtis were fascinated by National Socialism. Not that they agree with the ideology, but they were just interested in the subject. I too am fascinated with the subject, but I'm in no way a Nazi.
@xenbay wiki/Joy_Division#Early_releases wiki/An_Ideal_for_Living read over these two links from wikipedia, saves me just copy/pasting what I was going to say.
@misternipples100 Never, EVER mention that band on a Joy Division song. Also, this song isn't "alright;" of all the words of all the languages, not one can accurately convey the greatness of this song.
Well early punk was a bit into Nazi kitsch what with the swastikas and even the name Joy Division. But of course the whole Nazi kitsch trend pretty much ended the moment actual Nazis started forming punk bands and everyone who wasn't a complete cunt quickly disassociated themselves from such imagery.
The cover (Hitler youth drumming boy) was drawn by Bernard (he uses surname Albrecht in the credits). It's a fold out that also includes a picture of a Nazi solider pointing a gun at a boy. Guess its the Warsaw connection.
even in their 'punk' days they were still had an exceptionally unique style. i mean, this isn't just simple 'anarchy in the UK, let's ride our skateboards and spraypaint profanity on the burger king' music, but rather this sort of velvet underground-meets-neu! hybrid that should not in the least be passed off as 'a band that would one day be interesting attempting to find themselves and struggling to do so'
@squidvicious27 and i totally agree. i just think it's become somewhat of a lost art. punk used to essentially be music that was just too different (perhaps even bizarre) for the average music fan to get into, a sort of artsy, bohemian approach. it was always confrontational, but because it was so against the grain. now, at least in a main-stream sense, it's about riding your skateboard and thumbing your nose at everyone. but, again, i mean more 'mtv punk', if you will . . .
Hey everyone, If you love Joy Division then you should check out my channel new videos are added every week! We already have the full peel sessions and an ideal for living. Closer, unknown pleasures and some original Warsaw stuff will be coming soon...
@megalomania29 his voice is somehow different here. Whatever, this song is probably the best Joy Division song to me, the real Joy Division the way I have imagined they might have sound like, so dark and scary, sinister. They say this is Punk? No way if you ask me, this is Joy Division, one and unique.
@MythiKirSteN Now this guy...ha..this guy has got to be the most original fellow I have ever seen youtube to this date. NIce joke bro, thumbs up. Everybody like it so he can feel cool.
@UnDead3180 That majority of human beings like shit. They don't want anything deep, powerful, and emotional. They just want simple, faggoty, forgettable noises.
@UnDead3180 Joy Division never get that famous? The mistace is to compare Fame with Success, two different things, Joy Division inspired pretty much all the music we know, as also did the Sex Pistols, and meny bands that might not be that famous for the public opinion, but they are more than successfull for the people who got the knowledge to apreciate their greatness.
Never compare them with some random star that has only achieved fame, but not greatness.
@tehvenom After Ian passed away, Joy Division was no more. Some sort of pact between the members to not continue the band if one of the members were to leave or something. But the remaining three went on to form New Order. So it couldn't be a Joy Division song from after Ian's death.
@emersontotalyconfuse joy division got there name from that book.."house of dolls" about the 2 camps the ss put the jew woman into ..work division and joy division....
@SuperGrimupnorth you're right,i saw the information on wikipedia. The old 80's & 90's gothics of here(brazil) used to say that this camp was "made" of gays and transvestites,i think that they was wrong. but where they put the gays? excuse my bad english.
@emersontotalyconfuse ..if you listen to "no love lost"..it says half way through...the line...."no love lost in the house of doll's" ..house of dolls ,bein the book from where the name of the band came from..and where the song also came from
Those two chords, and don´t get me wrong, is the sound of evil. For real, if you were about to put down death, coldness and pain on instruments... you don´t get much closer to this.
I love to philosophy about the untold stories behind Division´s songs.
@landscapeofbones Humans don't give a f**k about genius, unfortunately. The sillier and hollower the better :( There is a reason Ian Curtis felt how he felt; humans are sh!t and life sucks.
