Clearly you didnt read what I said. Im sorry, I didnt realize Warsaw/Joy Division werent playing punk shows in 77-78 but they were playing "Joy Division" shows. You dont even know what youre saying. I never called them a typical punk band, the nazi imagery went along with the territory. Sex Pistols did it, New York Dolls did it, Siouxsie Sioux did it, and a whole mess of others. It was for shock value, what are you missing here?

@unfamous13 It was more than just shock value. Bernard Sumner and especially Ian Curtis were fascinated by National Socialism. Not that they agree with the ideology, but they were just interested in the subject. I too am fascinated with the subject, but I'm in no way a Nazi.

Well early punk was a bit into Nazi kitsch what with the swastikas and even the name Joy Division. But of course the whole Nazi kitsch trend pretty much ended the moment actual Nazis started forming punk bands and everyone who wasn't a complete cunt quickly disassociated themselves from such imagery.

The cover (Hitler youth drumming boy) was drawn by Bernard (he uses surname Albrecht in the credits). It's a fold out that also includes a picture of a Nazi solider pointing a gun at a boy. Guess its the Warsaw connection.

even in their 'punk' days they were still had an exceptionally unique style. i mean, this isn't just simple 'anarchy in the UK, let's ride our skateboards and spraypaint profanity on the burger king' music, but rather this sort of velvet underground-meets-neu! hybrid that should not in the least be passed off as 'a band that would one day be interesting attempting to find themselves and struggling to do so'

@squidvicious27 and i totally agree. i just think it's become somewhat of a lost art. punk used to essentially be music that was just too different (perhaps even bizarre) for the average music fan to get into, a sort of artsy, bohemian approach. it was always confrontational, but because it was so against the grain. now, at least in a main-stream sense, it's about riding your skateboard and thumbing your nose at everyone. but, again, i mean more 'mtv punk', if you will . . .

The mistace is to compare Fame with Success, two different things, Joy Division inspired pretty much all the music we know, as also did the Sex Pistols, and meny bands that might not be that famous for the public opinion, but they are more than successfull for the people who got the knowledge to apreciate their greatness.

Never compare them with some random star that has only achieved fame, but not greatness.

@tehvenom After Ian passed away, Joy Division was no more. Some sort of pact between the members to not continue the band if one of the members were to leave or something. But the remaining three went on to form New Order. So it couldn't be a Joy Division song from after Ian's death.
