  • Graded today with him and his son! It was great, I passed, but I've never done 4 hours of karate before...might take a while to recover.

  • Kanazawa Sensei is a Grand Master all the way, he is the real deal.

  • grading on friday yaaaaay

  • So... how do you get a Dan 10? What are the "kata" moves of Dan 10?

  • Umm..."kancho"? Kancho is a Japanese prank where you jam your index fingers into someone's butthole. Why does it say "Master Kanazawa, Kancho" in the description?

  • @renshiboom

this is 館長(a superintendent) , not 浣腸

but both of them have the same pronunciation ;)

  • @renshiboom It actually also happens to mean President....

  • @renshiboom kancho obviously has different meanings, it also means the chief instructor of skif - japan, therefore the chief instructor of the world (kancho) which is the highest position you can have in the shotkan karate international federation

  • wait - an empty mind is a state of control?! I know a lot of people in control then lol

  • He must be good at karate and I'm sure he's a lovely guy . . . but he is no more Zen than the most obnoxious commenter on this video. You always were and always will be. As is he. PS JDS for the belt :-P

  • Shihan Kanazawa is indeed a living treasure. One of the greatest living Masters of the Martial Way.

  • I have also the black belt with 10 Dan.

  • @15081508100 yea, and im yoda's master ;)

  • I have also the black belt with 10 Dan.

  • Is this "Mushin" concept in any way similar to the "WuJi" Shifu is trying to teach us in Taoist Wushu? I know "Mushin" means "Empty Mind", while the concept I'm trying to grasp is stillness of mind and removal of any additional or useless things in the mind.

  • @AndyRaslan Empty Mind, means letting go of the effort, the learned way.... so that you can act spontaneous and natural in the moment.

So i would say yes... it all points to the same mindstate, the same level of attainment in Martial arts.

  • @AndyRaslan LoL

  • The man is a living treasure. Respect. Im a novice karate practitioner of the ITKF.

    Osu!

  • NICE PRET-A-PORTER OUTFITS!

  • Trained with him and his son today, will train again tomorrow morning.

Learned as much today as my whole time as a karate student.

  • what ever you say abou this sensei can be your own opinion but sensei kanazawa is amazng :) aged 80, 10th dan hes doing great for his age and is amazing at his karate i hope that when i get into the dans that i am able to be good like him and follow in his footsteps :)) <3 x

  • Most people whether martial artists or not could learn alot from this man. I have been practising karate for 7 yrs and aspire one day to be half as good as this man.

  • ''The USA is wealthy and the lifestyle is very relaxed'' ??? can't believe he said that.

  • @ImIwilliamImI compared to life in Japan, life in the US is cake.

  • @rAFiCoRe

Yes, but America is still not a wealthy country with a relaxed life style.

The American dream is a big lie.

  • @ImIwilliamImI mh got to give that one. :D it all adds up to the same anyway..... we are screwed, all together.

  • @ImIwilliamImI I think the "American Dream" gives people the choice to do whatever they want, and so most people obviously pick the easy path, which is what I think Master Kanazawa is referring to.

  • @Yamtendo

If so, the American dream exist in many countries.

U.S.A has so many problems right now, they are parasites living on debt.

  • im a 10th bob

  • lace0mafia u went to a mc dojo am i right lol

  • as a martial artist i want to say the uniform that we call gi i never liked wearing it

  • by 8 i was a black belt in tae kwon do and by 11 i was black in karate now im 16 and i forgot names and catas because i have memory problems i feel ashamed

  • Mushin is something that hit me I train In kempo Karate I also do Hatha Yoga and I have to say Mushin is what I experience from Karate and Yoga it is such a great feeling and so free from exes thought etc OSU

  • OMFG either he has the ultimate secret of Rogain (for men) or he is just that fuckin healthy.....wow

  • 2:40 i expected him to fly :-P

  • AND A SEVENTY YEAR OLD TITTY AT DAT

  • 0:25 TITTY

  • you mentioned kanazawa-samas daylie routine: Can you tell about his daylie routine plz. I myself am a karate teacher, so togther we could spread karate healthy and happyness ; )

  • wow

  • DAmn.it's hard to beleive hes 72. His movements are that or a 30 year old. He looks as if he's late 40's

  • omg i dont think i ll be that fit when i reach 72

even if i continue learning shotokan karate!

  • takuma sakasaki

  • This guy is an inspiration. I can be very lazy and not train hard sometimes, and this guy motivates me. To find anything in life that can keep you going is great, but this guy found something to be passionate about for all those years... Just awesome.

  • Only in Karate can you wear glasses an feel safe.

  • is he an undead??? he must be a gud example of living fossil wkwkwkw

  • @Han893 he's alive I think he lives in hawaii

  • @TheShotokankarateguy hmmm i know shotokan karate is the best among other branches!! i think he's one of the guy that must be feared hmmm anyway he's really old man dude that cannot be touched by some random ppl

  • @Han893 shotokan is a good branch of karate

  • @TheShotokankarateguy another gud branch probz kyukushin ryuu karateka

  • next year he turns 80..... this person is astonishing. he'll live 10 years more and still whoop ass...

  • @NiggaJoaozao Actually, in my opinion Goju Ryu is the best and before I get flamed or trolled saying "I haven't tried Shotokan so how do you know?", actually I am brown belt Shotokan and blue belt Goju Ryu. I am only blue belt as we had to move to somewhere else and Shotokan was the nearest available karate club.

  • SHOTOKAN, best karate ever (L)

  • He is 72???? He looks like he is in his 50s.

  • as far as fighting goes, ill have to see him fight to see if he's a grandmaster, as they do in my school, but as far as culture goes and traditions, he knows his stuff.

  • to say the least though, this is captivating and brings insight on the true meaning of Japanese Shotokan

  • I train shotokan, and this guy is amazing,my Sensei is the most amazing man iv'e ever seen though,we actually have a top 3 Dojo in America not because of how many blackbelts we have, even though we dominate all our tournys, its a very small place but because our sensei kept tradition, which i think helped our mental spiritual and physical strength.he himself is an older man at 59,i wish the younger generation would keep the tradition and fundamentals of Japanese Shotokan, yet i'm only a Orange belt

  • shotokan karate 4 life

  • ...if this is a legend of karate, shaolin monks are myths of karate without even knowing it.

  • How can you respect some ppl that calls themselves "Grandmaster" when you know they havent done SHIT to get to that level? Seriously tho. When compering these so-called GM today to some like Kanazawa or Oyama they dont stand up.

  • @Kinghercules morihei ueshiba was a legend, all the ones dat came after him will never compare. i think this is the way of martial arts; its about the journey 2 the art not the actual technique, it doesn't matter when they were born, they would still b just as great. eventual the styles change so much that they hardly compare 2 wat came before, den another guy comes along and makes a master piece by connecting the dots. that in itself is quite profound...

  • @nuky100

Hmmm...IDK....I think it does matter. Just because you read a few books and learn from over the internet dont make your ass a GM. Just because your friends promote you to 9th or 10th dan and you make up a name for your school but havent changed the style you trained in dont make you GM. Just because you got your 1st dan and joined the army and made it to general but havent continued training in the Arts and you wanna create a new style doesnt put on Kanazawa's level.

  • @Kinghercules well 2 say that stuff u have 2 know the person and where he's coming from; u say one guy doesn't know anything; yet, were u there when he threw his first punch, got his first belt, do u know what he went thru 2 get that 10th dan title/ grand master title, do u know how many hours he trained 4 ? ur just judging someone, thats easy, i can judge everyone i c on the street. what i was saying before was, its not the teacher or technique's that makes a good martial artist its the person

  • @Kinghercules

You dont have to be there if you know their history. If they told you their history or even if you read their history. You dont have to be there.

I understand what you are sayin. I just dont agree. There's no way you can tell me that you're equal to me when you read books and trained on your own and I had to go thru the ranks, fights, sweat, blood, tournaments, failures, & anxiety of passing or failing from the dojo (not you per say).

  • @Kinghercules

    ..... Shut, the fuck, up.

These Grandmaster's have supreme skill and understanding, and that ideal of "haven't done shit to get to that level" is pretty hard to justify with over 50 years of experience under that 10th Dan black belt.

  • @Cha0sB1k3r

"over 50 years of experience under that 10th Dan black belt."

    WTF you talkin about?

Who the fuck you talkin about?

Cause Im talkin about ppl like General Choi and Hwang Kee.

    Now what?

  • @Kinghercules It's true.

  • ty for this Video

  • wtf that kids a brownbelt?!

  • I was lucky enough to attend a Shotokan class in California led by Kanazawa-sensei. I was an 8 year old blue belt at the time and I had no idea what kind of man he truly was. It's cool to see that he stands as an inspiration to people even today.

  • FOR EVER!

  • Respect for the grand master!

  • I'm a 24th dan in my own invented martial art system. Now bow down to me everyone.

  • bullshitsu.

  • I used to do shotokan now i dont. When i was doing shotokan he signed my gi

  • Sensei Kanazawa?oh yes.he the largest one.all of my respect his!

  • Wa do Ryu 4ever

  • This man is one of my heroes. I wish i could meet him one day. If i had the money I would train every day just like him cause I wish to reach his level of understanding of karate.

  • legend

  • you get stripes on your belt to tell rank not everyone may be a black belt

  • A legend huh? Why does he look like he runs a black belt mill? Even the kids seem to have a black. Does he only work with high ranking students or something?

  • @PalaceOfExile nah no ahaha.. he works with everyone .. there are many black belt students coz , in japan even the little kids achieve faster the black belt , or something like that hehe... but he has already come to my coutry to teach... i just couldn.t go .. a shame hehe

  • @PalaceOfExile Because its not about being a black belt. Its about mastering yourself, forming good relations with others, staying consistent with your goals, and of course Shotokan kicking the crap out of your competition if you have a broken arm (which Hirokazu did, and also did so 3 times in a row).

  • Merci jp goguet

  • Bravo maître jpaul goguet

  • My mum and dad were 2 of the 3 original students to be taught by this incredible man along with Shiro Assano upon their arrival in England in the 1960s

  • hai sensei!

  • oss sensei

  • i think i saw you say the same thing on a zen buddhism video with Gudo Nishijima haha.

  • wow, he still has his hair, its even colored aswell!

  • oss sensei

  • cult

  • Shotokan is one of those few traditional arts that has not gotten stuck in the past, but evolved and developed through hundred years. Or thousand years, depending on how you view its history. This art, that I myself train, is always cutting edge and modern.

  • ok then i will try this empty mind in a sparing match soon i hope its as good as he says i actaly hawe no problem thinking abaut nothing just never tryed in a match before

  • @joonascun this is simply bullshido.all u need is a focused mind.emptying ur mind and think of nothing will get u knocked out.i never see any instruction on how to empty the mind.i think it is simply forgetting everything unimportant and focus on the business at hand.thats how u get mind like water, able to think fast, not no thinking.

  • @khairuleven "Empty mind" means simply being here and now. The clutter of the mind takes us away from being here and now. Kanazawa is preaching the benefit of staying present. Nothing "bullshido" about it.

  • @HarryBallbag Well thats one level of interpretation, being in the now. But thats not the whole meaning at all (though it is a step in the right direction). It means to transcend thinking altogether. It is a level of understanding that is beyond pure intellectual theory of; there is no you to think, you are one with all.

  • @RoastLambShanks You are thinking on the lines of the "atman". Kanazawa is simply talking about mindfulness. No religious baggage, karate-ka are not obligated to buy into any of it, and so not bullshido.

  • @khairuleven

you have no understanding about zen

  • I hope, I will be as fit as him, when Im 72! amazing, he looks like 45-50!

  • i wish he could be my master

  • Who would win in a fight, H. Kanazawa or Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage of the leaf village? Kanazawa has a 10th Dan in Karate, but Sarutobi can cast a Fire Dragon Flame Missile and can summon Enma, a Monkey King that can transform into an Adamantine Staff. Who'd you bet on?

  • @vafles Suck your ass.

  • @vafles i would bet on the guy with more health and strenght

  • @vafles wtf are you talking about?

  • @JockeTheMaze

    hey asshole wanna fight

  • @marvzsz havent you lost enough already?

  • martial skills are not define by belts geez belts are for losers!!!!

  • I don't know much about shotokan as I practice Korean style. Is shotokan similar to Kyokushin? This gentlemen has the quintessence of a master, humble, patient, good technique, right mind :) Seems he has made the world a better place; as masters should

  • Awesome man. But how can that little boy in the start have a black belt? Is it a black belt he is wearing=

  • its a junior b-belt. he knows all about karate but he is not mature enough for the full b-belt

  • It's a junior black belt man. In Japan traditional black belt rankings aren't issued untill the man/woman reaches the age of 16 if i'm not mistaken. It gives the kids a chance to develop mentally and physically, allowing them to be able to safely control their knowledge.

  • Dear sir, he is 72 years old.

Consider any "ordinary guy" or even a professional fighter at 72 and then come back to assess his skill.

  • sorry man your not really an authority on martial arts. you have no place on rating a grandmaster if you've never trained in a martial art. his hand, foot, and blocking techniques are superb, and his attitude is in the right place. he's not cocky or full of himself like the ufc faggots who wrestle naked on the ground.

  • @Raitsogen Well put. UFC are dancing men in underwear with swollen ears and ego. Nothing but roid raging tiny mushroom heads that do nothing but cock measure and roll over each other in lust and call it "mixed martial arts"

  • @Raitsogen Speak the truth!

  • @Raitsogen look man he is 72 years and he looks so strong ,thats what we say martial arts , I have been practicing karate for 13 years ,since i was 8 years old , and i felt a deference when i stopped doing it ,I was extremely strong when i was doing karate ,but now i feel like i am weak..............karate is the best sport

  • @Raitsogen Seems like you didn't bring your Mushin the day you wrote that comment...

  • @Jitkyundou

dont say shit if you aint done shit!

  • Awesome,..I'm not a Shotokan guy,..but as a martial artist, this gentleman is a "Master".....

  • Ditto for me. Osu!

  • @fanofkimboslice well put... A short video can't really show how much of a Master he is.

To call him amazing is a huge understatement. I know...I have trained with him several times in my Martial career.

Awesome is a good word to describe him.

  • was this video shot in 2005? so does it mean Sensei Kanazawa is 77 this year (as of 2010)?

  • its unbelievable to think hes that age!!

  • @alastive

no he is 80 this year, celebrating his birthday at the Kanazawa Cup in South Africa

  • 72years old :O nice speed and strength ...

  • i've watched his kata videos and have been amazed on how crisp and flawless his kata is, it amazed me that someone that potentially deadly could be so wise at the same time. truely a dying mind set in these days

  • That guy is in his 70's?!?! Damn, he looks better than guys in their 50's! True testament to what martial arts can do for a person, both spiritually and physically.

  • When Japanese people age they often look pretty young even in their 80s :P

  • so awsome

  • being humble --- one of the most difficult things to do

  • you are very ignorant

  • I beg to differ. Having met the man, trained with him, broken bread with him and talked extensively with him it is certainly not only about money. The man is truely humble. He gives very freely of his most precious comodity and always had - his time. He takes the time to explain a technique and has immense patience with all of his students. He takes sometimes more than an hour at a seminar or competition to sit and sign suits and to talk to students. A true embodiment of true budo.

  • @johnbsan broken bread? wtf like jesus did?

  • Nice comment. I agree. Its aggravating when people suggest that a man like Kanazawa is only after money. Its not about the money, its about his love of karate. Now... with that being said. The man is certainly entitled to make a living, just like anybody else. He's got to eat too. It just so happens that he makes his living off of karate. What's wrong with that? Without people like him, none of us would know anything about karate. We should be thankful. The haters are jealous. Osu.

  • oss!

  • *osu* :P

  • i competed in the 2009 world championships in athens, greece and it was just amazing to c how many people Kanazawa Kancho has brought together and how many lives hes changed

  • Kanazawa is the epitome of dedication. He stuck to his guns, did what he thought best for himself and was eccentric all along.

  • OSS SENSEI!

  • *osu* :P

  • ive trained with him evrytime he steps into australia, ive takena 5 year break after starting sinc ei was 5, im now 20... he remembers my family and i always and its always to train under him or his son (whos a freak!!!!) looking forward to seeing him in 2012!

  • Shotokan 4ever

  • Amen

  • Mmm this wad nice..have had the pleasure of being graded by the great man..memories...and what a grand man he is

  • he looks pretty young for his actual age.

  • he looks like he's 50

  • he is 78 years old he has now stopped trainning people over the world but i think that he still trains by himself although he has stopped trainning people he is stil going to watch the world titles in Australia in 2012.

  • power of karate :)

  • Shihan is the certificate that allows a black belt karate practicioner (no matter which dan is) to become an instructor and therefore to open a Dojo and teach Karate

  • he is ama zing period

  • Wasnt there a title after 10th Dan? Shihan or something.

  • No, 10th Dan is the highest rank in Shotokan. Shihan is sort of an honorific title (means master instructor). A Shotokan practioner called Shihan doesn't really need to be a 10th or even a 9th Dan, as the title is mostly distinct from the dan system.

  • "at the age of 72 ..."

    A shiver trough my spine.

  • 78 by now

  • Wow...fifty years of hard training to reach 10th degree black belt! That's the real deal.

There are so many fake dojos out there that hand out black belts like door prizes.

I agree with another comment below - karate is good for exercise and discipline, but without lots of kumite, it is utterly worthless in a fight.

  • the same could be said of any art or system.

  • the embodiment of the art itself.... a true master of the art, he's living his life practice, enjoying the art... so what retirement? my only question is.... is that hair on his head real? if it is.... that's unreal!!

  • mplzR

    yes.youll are all right

    I bad exprest that

  • Sorry I though he was chuck Norris!!!!

  • wow. he's awesome. i met him and he's a really nice guy.

  • shotokan and go dju rju come from Okinava.

shotokan oficiali bring to Japan master Gichin Funakoshi

go ju rju, Higaona Kanriona, bring from Okinava to Fujian, province in China...

  • I am perfectly aware of that as I am a shotokan practioner. Shotokan-ryu and Goju-ryu are both seaprate styles of Okinawan karate though. Your last statement could be understood in a way that Goju is a sub-style of Shotokan, while it actually is not. Goju-ryu was founded around 1930 by Miyagi Sensei, a student of Master Higashionna Kanryo. So in a way Master Kanryo was indeed a founder of style that later became to known as Goju. Shotokan however was founded 5(6) years later by Master Funakoshi.

  • I do shotokan =)

  • i bet you do ;D

  • ye i too :)

  • you train karate for youre self, not for a fight,

for a fight,Man invented the gun.I am 34 now,and train karate from 4yr of my life.

several time I win tournamenti in my country.

But,that is for me,not for talking around.

i train Go Dju Rju stile of Shotokan karate and have second dan.Now i have school of karate and train kid's

my son has 4yr and hi train year and a half

    I'm from Serbia

and sorry for very bad English

    And some more

in street fight, the most importent is first hit.
