The original author of FIRST BLOOD said he really like the fourth movie because of the plenty refs made to his book and the fact it was violent and darker.

okay moviepreviewcritic, Stallone mentioned he wanted to do the fourth movie as if it were directed by rambo himself.

It was also closer to the elements of the character of the first blood novel, in which rambo has no redeeming values, he guts and kills everyone acting like a killing machine on the loose, only to be killed in the end originally, but hollywood came and made him friendly.

In actuality, First Blood was before, a great novel from a great canadian writer, David Morell. I enjoyed the movie, and then read the novel. The novel itself, is impressively well-written, for a first time author, such as Morrel. Ted Kotcheff wanted to make Rambo more sympathetic, as much as Stallone.
