Thank god for Rufus Thomas, for you youngsters that dont know ,hes a brother that was on the stax label that made dance based songs in the late 60s early 70s..dubbed as the world oldest teenager!!!
That is real talk at the end Joe. I like ICE-T on Law and Order SVU , but I don't agree with him when Ice-T says that the 80's were wack, He was in the movies Breakin 1 and 2 and he dissess the 80's. I dont understand why he disses it and that is a part of his genration.
I love this interview, it was so pure. That''s how you are supposed to leave the game. He's dressed sharp, better than cats that's muti platinum now, he's at Peace with his contribution. I Love It
@AddisTunes Joe (Roper) Ski Love went to my high school Cardinal Hayes as a freshman but he transferred after only a month. He & a few friends caught a bad beatdown because He and his friends tried to stick someone up in Parkchester. Parkchester was a nice part of the BX. Little did Joe know that the dude they tried to stick was crazy azz James the head of the stomp committee. Joe's cousin supreme's teeth were kicked out. Joe transferred to Columbus and years later he blew up with Pee Wee
@Dirtymoney8 I'm happy for Joe. If anything, I'm reliving my glory days when dudes handled their business without guns. I saw alot of shyt growing up in the 80's and I must admit I do like retelling some of the stories especially since I matured and dont do any of that stuff anymore. It's nothing but an OG and his Barbershop talk about New York in the old days. If you knew dudes from that cloth, stories like this are common. Its a NYC Thang.
Yeah. Everyone has his own perception of hip hop I guess. Souljah Boy did what others ain't do, whether you like his music or not. Bottom line, if he wasn't successful no one would care about him.
Wow! Joe Ski Love made a good point when he talked about the whole Souljah Boy situation. He is not lying we all come from different places and points of view. Good point Joe Ski.
I can keep going and mention alot of artist & groups who did "dance songs". To keep this simple, if you don't like, you don't have to listen to it but at the same time you bitching about what's being played on t.v. or radio..wtf are you doing? thats easy, bitching about the wack ass shit you here on tv/radio..and guess what?...they're still playing it...I love the old school music, wish those rappers got props for their shit, but that movements gone now, what you hear now is what it is til then.
@gregnice25 name some wack shit back in the day. And when you do, can you tell me how many radio spins it got? Can you tell me if the wack rappers back then were in movies, on TV Shows, in front of the mainstream shucking and jiving being paraded around as stereotypical success stories? If you can answer those questions and come with some consistency, then I will take what you say more seriously.
@gregnice25 By the way, this is not about going back and dwelling on the past. People understand there is evolution in all aspects, but at the same time, people want to preserve the culture they grew up with in hopefully expanding that same measure of intellect and awareness that was going on in the 70s and 80s...I don't see that today. I see slaves with self hate and the whole "gettin' money" mentality squandering their money on bullshit!!!! No empowerment or even a dialogue is being raised.
ok dumbass, if you think about...who stopping Soulja Boy for doing his song?....no one...not you, not me, not anybody...oh wait, it doesn't stop there....D4L...laffy taffy....who stopping them for creating their song? ...no one....wait wait...Quad City DJs...C'mon N' Ride It (The Train)...that came out in the mid 90's....who was talking shit about them making that song?...no one...The music they came out with is not just for KIDS, is for everybody to enjoy. Did you forget , their "DANCE SONGS"?
JOE SKI, YOU ARE THE TRUTH AND YOU DEFINITELY SPOKE IT....HIP HOP WILL ALWAYS CHANGE,...PEOPLE NEED TO REALIZE THAT...SO FUCK YA FOR DISSIN SOULJA BOY, THE KAT MADE A "#1" HIT AND MADE HIS MONEY, LET ALONE, HE'S BLACK...SO YALL BROKE ASS BLACK FOLKS, NO NO...YOU BROKE ASS PEOPLE OUT THERE DISSIN THIS KAT, FALL BACK, CUZ WTF ARE YAAAALL DOING? .........NOTHING!!!
@gregnice25 When you get off your knees sucking white corporate penises, make sure you gargle. You can get off the record sales and making money bullshit. That wasn't the reason why hip hop was created. Your opinion is that...an opinion, but at the same time, it's motherfuckas like you that are the reason why this music is an embarrassment. Know your history if you want to have a legitimate debate instead of the "You're a hater" and the "They making money" comments. I welcome it!
Yeah but Soulja boy thought he was a gangsta AS WELL as a bubblegum rapper. Which is why nobody respects him. Check out a song called "Test my nutz" by Soulja boy. This ringtone rap's gone too far now JoeSki, so I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one.
HipHop is a full human experience. Stop letting the corporate machine tell us who we are and own our identity as individuals and a people. Respect all. In the words of KRS:"Cause I don't walk this way to portray or reinforce stereotypes of today-like all my brothers eat chicken and watermelon - talk broken English and drug sellin-see I'm tellin and teachin pure fact-the way some act in rap is kinda wack and it lacks-creativity and intelligence-but they don't care cause the company's sellin it"

As much as I liked the Pee Wee Herman song and Joe Ski Love (even though it was corny as hell), I can't agree with him on that. He's trying to be politically correct. ...Joe was where he was supposed to be at in his day..THATS WHAT MAKES HIM A LEGEND. Commercial america has finally found the perfect formula to plug everybody into that will produce the biggest return for their investment. Musical ART used to be a constant battle between the artist and the business, but now these "artist"(cough, cough) come in saying..What do I have to do to make a million. ART ISN'T PRODUCT. Its cool if your lucky enough to make dough at something u love...BUT...
BAD ANALOGY...hiphop has elevated since then and all this commercial shit is taking us backwards. Every mc in hiphop back then was UNDERGROUND. Its like if u enter a bboy battle in 2010 and bust out a windmill and win like it was still 1980. Cats today that haven't stayed up on their lyricism or musicality are suddenly getting props. Every year hiphop kept raising the bar with lyrics, dancing, djing, ect. Then suddenly..BAM...mfs came in..BOUGHT HIPHOP OUT 4 A PIECE OF SILVER or other shiny object
Look, let's get this straight right now.I dont know why Joe Ski even TRIED to compare himself to Soulja Boy bc,he(JSL) wasn't trying to shit on Hip Hop by doing what he did,in fact Hip Hop "dance songs" where nothing new,but the SAME artist would put DIFFERENT cuts on the same album,NOT talking about Lambos and Gold dog houses and shit! The difference is rappers weren't trying to become REPUBLICANS back then.
@NorthCentrality Exactly. The "artists" of today have a different audience than back then.To me the kids were alot smarter and had more home training back then, than now. Kids today ,cant pay attention longer than 20 mins to 1 thing, unless that 1 thing switches up alot on it's own.So Soulja Boy is a direct reflection of where the youths mentalities are right now.
@NorthCentrality LMFAO!! YEP! But i think skills will prevail anyway!! If we just stick to our guns and stay true to the true spirit of Hip Hop and be creative then it will all work out. Those of us that choose to chase the wrong set of ideals will separate themselves from Hip Hop.
Joe Ski was deep on this. I respect him so much after hearing him talk. Pee Wee dance definitely formed my early interest in "rap music", but I can totally see what he's saying.
DAMN!! i SAID THE SAME SHIT!! I dont like SOUJA BOY, but I cant diss him because I liked PEE WEE HERMAN DANCE. I learned that every rapper has their audience.. appeal to you audience. KEEP IT REAL
This was far from a wack track . It was a formative joint where a joint was made for a particular dance , WHICH EVERYONE NOW IS DOING TO DEATH , The difference is there was balance in the game back then . There was room for this record alongside P.E , BDP , Ice T , EPMD , Run DMC , Rakim . Kane , G Rap , Mc Lyte , Latifah , De La Soul , Slick Rick Dougie Fresh
nuff respect to u joe ski, i understand what your saying out ring tone rappers, but if you listen to the lyrics of soldier boy he aint talking bout a dance he was talkin bout disrespecting women super soaking the hoes and super man is a man ejaculating over a womans back. these are not lyrics for kids in the charts, i would let my son listen to the pee wee herman any day over soldier boy. u cant really compare will smith, mc hammer or vanilla ice to the likes of lil jon lil wayne, soldier boy. 1
the reason why souja boy and 99 percent of tha niggas out now are called ring tone rapper joe ski no diss to you but, all them kats sound alike , when you dropped ya joint you were tha only kat talkin about pee wee herman and u had ya own style, now all these young kats are tha same..ohh im 19 by the way
dude the comment u seaid is right on point... and i all ways say that south has messed up rap...... only ppl i like from the sought is the geto boys and outkast
That was a fresh interview. Luv the respect and luv what he is doin with himself. If you read this Joe i broke out the dance in the club when they played your song. I am the only one that knew how to do it. Much respect dude.
I respectfully disagree to a certain extent. I know and underdstand that music comes from ones perspective. But back then everyone from Joeski Love to LL Cool J to Public Enemy could rhyme and on top of that they had dope beats. Now rappers are just saying Jingles with bad lyrics and are making millions. If you don't like R&B singers you can't sing then why does everyone want us to listen rappers who can't rap!!!!
My man is still looking kind of cool. I am 36 and it is wild when you think of how long ago these times were. Getting driven around with the system blasting at 11,12, 13. The hip-hop back then (the modern, good stuff) had hot beats and lyrics and VARIETY in topics. Now everyone is a killer and a dealer and rhymes the same. The mid 90's was the only other era that compares. SAY JOE!
Man, I loved Pee Wee Dance, cause the movie was one of my favorites. I recently picked up Joe Ski's single on vinyl "Say Joe/My Girl" Couldn't believe it when I saw it. $1.00
i feel the old school shit it was a simpler time in hip hop and life but i dont agree with the ice t analogy back then these fun records were hip hop the corny songs have had ther time and passed im still with ice on that one
Peace to you Joe-ski...For a brief time in our Hip hop lives...we had a "SKI" in our tag...thanks for the jam too....and ur right...It WAS OUR OWN EXPERIENCES..who you knew and their particular flavor, as long as it was def.....
j-dilla, say huh what! that joe ski love ladies and gents. when i see cats rock this t-shirt , i alwayz think of joe ski and how the dj'z back in the day use to cut that part like dilla did. good work D-Nice!!
Was on point with the Souljah Boy situation! Pep's need to get over the fact of what hip-hop has become today. Internet and all this technology wasn't there when we was growing up! I'm 30 something and growing up in my era there's nothing that can explain how beautiful the hip -hop experience was for me growing up. Pep's need to get over what hip-hop has become and thank god that they we're able to experince the early ecensse of hip-hop back in the day! The Golden era was 87-97!
Im so glad Joeski got to speak his peace on his record and hip hop today. He makes a lot of sense & his record still gets played to this day on my turntables & will always bring back great memories from 1986. Thanks Joeski.
Yet another introspective video D-Nice. Thanks for this. I like what he had to say about Soulja Boy and artists like him. I just want to point out though that Soulja Boy and other ringtone rappers aren't representing the kind of good clean fun that he did on that record. Their brand of fun is a lot more pretentious. Great video tho! Look forward to the next 1
That beats STILL fucking niccccccceeee

to passthemicyaheadcase & Joeski Love
