  • always loved this video, mtv never played it like they did their 'pet' artists.

  • Total Classic Ian...thanks!

  • My favorite Ian Hunter song!

  • I have loved this song from childhood!!!!

  • Was just listening to this today while running with my iPod. If I could sing, and had a cool band, we'd cover this song. I've never seen this video - so here I am today in 2011 - I have listened to the song hundreds of times. It used to PISS off my boyfriend at the time too - because it was true, while I was dating him, all the good ones WERE taken.

  • Ian Hunter Rocks!!! This One is My Fave of His Solo Work. Thanks.

  • Another Great Track by the inimitable Mr. Hunter. Gee...wouldn't it have been cool if Clarence had played the sax, and been the "butler/valet" character? RIP Clarence, and keep on rocking Ian Hunter! Whoooo Hooooo!

  • Ian without his shades is just troubling.

  • For some reason, gorgeous Ian reminds me of Roger Daltrey in TOMMY in this video.

  • @SnugglySara Ian is not as wierd

  • This coupled with Martin Briley's "you ain't worth the salt in my tears" just completes the womanless 1983 high school dude double shot. Breaking up with your dignity intact only to find out everybody else is paired up.

  • Not long ago I came across another version of this song, but it was much slower. This is the version I remember hearing on MTV when I was a kid. So glad to see it after all these years!

  • @Yabbadabbawhat100.....yeah, I had this slower version on an old 45...didn't like this version as much as the faster one. I actually never remember seeing this video on MTV, ever. I did in fact see it played a lot on Friday Night Videos. I wonder why.....great song, great video, amazing ladies!!

  • Amazing how many albums he's done that are great from start to finish, this one too.

And there is another, slower version of this song on the album. Not a remix or slowed down like with today's stuff but a totally different arrangement.

  • This one got me into Ian/Mott at the tender age of 13 back in '83. For those who can't figure out why they love this song so much - it's the melody and that voice. BTW - another terrific/timeless song from this album - Seeing Double

  • It's The Big Man Clemons playing here. He's providing the music for the sax-syncing butler.

  • I still love this song... the video... the big hair... and that diner turn..still complicated!

  • the 1st song i ever heard by the great IH and have loved him ever since. cant wait to see him in Sept

  • Someone posted this video years ago and managed to i.d. the actress playing the object of Hunter's obsession. Anyone remember who the woman is? I think a few of the background girls also went on to bigger things, but I don't recall whom.

  • One of my favorite videos of all time. Classic!

  • Is that the Big Man (Clarence Clemons) on sax?

  • @bucky468 tonight on Little Steven's Underground Garage he had a version of this song with The Big Man on sax.

  • I remember seeing this one as a teen on the late, great Friday Night Videos before it went to crap. At the time I taped it on my Betamax and had it for a few years along with a lot of other episodes of the show.

    I miss that Betamax

  • That guy is a genius song writer of all times!!

  • taken

  • Ian Hunter is one of the best song writers ever.

  • @time903 you are correct sir!

  • Great song and video!

    Mott the Hoople fan here.

  • The song and video are cool-but if I remember correctly there was another song on this album called Captain Void And The Video Jets. I can't find that on youtube (or maybe another band did it and I'm remembering wrong). Does anyone remember or have it?

  • @maidenrulz1 No your right both of those songs are on the album "All Of The Good Ones Are Taken" it came out in1983.

  • The butler was played by Arthur J. "Captain" Haggerty (1931 - 2006). He had an interesting background - check his IMDB page.

  • I finally found it!! all these years later thanx for the upload!

  • Toasted cassette FTW LOL! ^__^

  • I'd forgotten about this one. Thanks so much for the upload. I remember, in an interview, he said he's supposed to be an Arthur type character in this video. God, I miss those days.

  • Is the big guy the same guy who was in Stir Crazy?

  • @nezpercenathan I think he was the same guy. The name of the guy in SC was Erland van Lidth De Jeude (he's in Wikipedia). Unfortunately, he died in 1987.

  • @nezpercenathan No, the big guy was Captain Haggerty. You can check out his imdb bio but his real claim to fame was as a prolific pioneer in the dog training world. He was quite often mistaken as the guy from Stir Crazy but he was Mr. Clean.

  • Now that, people, is a great song!

  • How could you NOT love this guy? Looks just like Robert Plant and is wildly cool...And look at his butler when he swigs from the champagne bottle in 1:25..heehee . This is the best of the 80's!!

  • maybe I was mistaken, maybe I got it wrong, but all of the good ones are taken in my song! great line!

  • thanks for sharing a great video!

  • Love It! Thanks...

  • I don't know the name of the bald butler, but he was a popular character actor in the 80s. For the fans--Not only is Ian sans-shades in a few scenes, but he's strumming his signature "H" guitar, which I've heard, has since been lost to time. I really liked htis song a lot when it came out..

  • @Braindazzled I dont know his name either, but I do beleive I recognize that large bald man from a few movies. Like I think he was the fighter in the Popeye movie ( with Robin Williams ) and also played a giant in the Terry Gilliam film Time Bandits. I'm going to try finding out on Wickipedia ( did I spell it right ? ) in just a minute.

  • @Skulldini No, his name was Captain Haggerty. He passed in 2006. He was a prolific pioneer in the dog training world. he wasn't in the Popeye movie but he was in a lot of other movies.

  • This video was played a lot in Canada on MuchMusic. The butler was played by the late Captain Haggetty who was famous for an NYC Dog School. Ian still has the entire Diner Set in his garage.

  • true...damn it.....maybe there is hope to find the perfect one....i thought i might have found her a few times in the last few years, but it didnt work like that ...fuck.....

  • Dam ! I don't know why I love this song so much!

  • @durangosteve Because it's such a catchy melody.........and there isn't a man on the face of this planet who hasn't felt like there is no one out there for him!

  • @dmnewton You got that right brother!

  • Awesome song (it'd be funny if it weren't true) Awesome video. The butler always reminded me of King Kong Bundy lol I also always saw it on local syndicated shows in the 80's

  • Anyone know the name of the actor who played the butler in the video?

  • I love Ian Hunter, I love this song! Thanks for the posting

  • how true is this, all the good ones are taken...

  • blessed

  • Loved this video/song, taped it off friday night videos back in 83 I believe.

  • For some reason MTV didn't like this one . . . which meant that all the syndicated and network video shows played it, which was cool, because my studio didn't have a cable hook-up but had a directional antenna for old school TV reception (kids, ask your parents). I almost sold an indie comic book based on characters in this video. and I don't know who the girl in the red leggings is, but 3 o'clock one morning when I was running low on energy and caffiene, I wanted to marry her . . .

  • @SmithNorthwest

I'd like the blonde in the black dress, with the single off-center ponytail, who looks like she's trying to dress like Stevie Nicks. ^_^

  • @SmithNorthwest Ian was always the man!

  • This is one of the few times you see Ian without his shades....
