Was just listening to this today while running with my iPod. If I could sing, and had a cool band, we'd cover this song. I've never seen this video - so here I am today in 2011 - I have listened to the song hundreds of times. It used to PISS off my boyfriend at the time too - because it was true, while I was dating him, all the good ones WERE taken.
Another Great Track by the inimitable Mr. Hunter. Gee...wouldn't it have been cool if Clarence had played the sax, and been the "butler/valet" character? RIP Clarence, and keep on rocking Ian Hunter! Whoooo Hooooo!
This coupled with Martin Briley's "you ain't worth the salt in my tears" just completes the womanless 1983 high school dude double shot. Breaking up with your dignity intact only to find out everybody else is paired up.
Not long ago I came across another version of this song, but it was much slower. This is the version I remember hearing on MTV when I was a kid. So glad to see it after all these years!
@Yabbadabbawhat100.....yeah, I had this slower version on an old 45...didn't like this version as much as the faster one. I actually never remember seeing this video on MTV, ever. I did in fact see it played a lot on Friday Night Videos. I wonder why.....great song, great video, amazing ladies!!
Amazing how many albums he's done that are great from start to finish, this one too.
And there is another, slower version of this song on the album. Not a remix or slowed down like with today's stuff but a totally different arrangement.
This one got me into Ian/Mott at the tender age of 13 back in '83. For those who can't figure out why they love this song so much - it's the melody and that voice. BTW - another terrific/timeless song from this album - Seeing Double
Someone posted this video years ago and managed to i.d. the actress playing the object of Hunter's obsession. Anyone remember who the woman is? I think a few of the background girls also went on to bigger things, but I don't recall whom.
I remember seeing this one as a teen on the late, great Friday Night Videos before it went to crap. At the time I taped it on my Betamax and had it for a few years along with a lot of other episodes of the show.
The song and video are cool-but if I remember correctly there was another song on this album called Captain Void And The Video Jets. I can't find that on youtube (or maybe another band did it and I'm remembering wrong). Does anyone remember or have it?
I'd forgotten about this one. Thanks so much for the upload. I remember, in an interview, he said he's supposed to be an Arthur type character in this video. God, I miss those days.
@nezpercenathan I think he was the same guy. The name of the guy in SC was Erland van Lidth De Jeude (he's in Wikipedia). Unfortunately, he died in 1987.
@nezpercenathan No, the big guy was Captain Haggerty. You can check out his imdb bio but his real claim to fame was as a prolific pioneer in the dog training world. He was quite often mistaken as the guy from Stir Crazy but he was Mr. Clean.
How could you NOT love this guy? Looks just like Robert Plant and is wildly cool...And look at his butler when he swigs from the champagne bottle in 1:25..heehee . This is the best of the 80's!!
I don't know the name of the bald butler, but he was a popular character actor in the 80s. For the fans--Not only is Ian sans-shades in a few scenes, but he's strumming his signature "H" guitar, which I've heard, has since been lost to time. I really liked htis song a lot when it came out..
@Braindazzled I dont know his name either, but I do beleive I recognize that large bald man from a few movies. Like I think he was the fighter in the Popeye movie ( with Robin Williams ) and also played a giant in the Terry Gilliam film Time Bandits. I'm going to try finding out on Wickipedia ( did I spell it right ? ) in just a minute.
@Skulldini No, his name was Captain Haggerty. He passed in 2006. He was a prolific pioneer in the dog training world. he wasn't in the Popeye movie but he was in a lot of other movies.
This video was played a lot in Canada on MuchMusic. The butler was played by the late Captain Haggetty who was famous for an NYC Dog School. Ian still has the entire Diner Set in his garage.
true...damn it.....maybe there is hope to find the perfect one....i thought i might have found her a few times in the last few years, but it didnt work like that ...fuck.....
@durangosteve Because it's such a catchy melody.........and there isn't a man on the face of this planet who hasn't felt like there is no one out there for him!
Awesome song (it'd be funny if it weren't true) Awesome video. The butler always reminded me of King Kong Bundy lol I also always saw it on local syndicated shows in the 80's
For some reason MTV didn't like this one . . . which meant that all the syndicated and network video shows played it, which was cool, because my studio didn't have a cable hook-up but had a directional antenna for old school TV reception (kids, ask your parents). I almost sold an indie comic book based on characters in this video. and I don't know who the girl in the red leggings is, but 3 o'clock one morning when I was running low on energy and caffiene, I wanted to marry her . . .
always loved this video, mtv never played it like they did their 'pet' artists.

It's The Big Man Clemons playing here. He's providing the music for the sax-syncing butler.

The butler was played by Arthur J. "Captain" Haggerty (1931 - 2006). He had an interesting background - check his IMDB page.
