ed r+ optical - the benchmark for d+b . steppa neuro-funk. see our video response for another classic :jonny l's "lets roll" as a tasty soundtrack to our our video project..
If I didnt know this was from 1998, Id've put this at about the last couple of years, production wise is way ahead of there time. there's a reason I love ed rush and optical and this track is why. it just hands you an imagination into a world beyond, this stuff is as unearthly as it gets.
I remember instantly falling in love with this when i heard Andy C play it on his Kiss 100 show back in 98! What a intro! and this tune is just bad bad bad!
@Voitzify I can't really remember what techstep is, but if Ed Rush and Optical are meant to be like it then I'd say that Neurofunk uses punchier, less clicky-clacky drums and not necessarily harder but more growling and "hairy" bass. If you want pretty much the typical Neurofunk sound then look no further than Phace and Misanthrop's "From Deep Space" album, but also check out Noisia, Spor, Black Sun Empire etc. :D
@megabacon23 .. i actually used to sit on my drums and play to all my dnb stuff . neighbors werent happy , so had to use metal coathangers as sticks and that killed it lol . often the neurofink dnb has a live kit feel i find
such a dope track. the tunes these guys were pointing out at the time and the stuff Matrix was doing then too is still so much better than stuff now a days.
ed rush + optical - wormhole and matrix - sleepwalk the two best dnb albums of all time IMO.
Because while i think Ed, Optical and Matrix were hot and that wormhole was a big album, it seems to me that Wormhole was a bit repetitive. The beats and atmosphere,
a bit short and heavily looped. not much variation going on.
I have to revisit concussion. I really dig Decoder's earlier stuff on hardleaders like fog and some other joints I can't remember the names now and his kosheen work but if memory serves the concussion album sounded pretty samey like your comment but I will go back through my vinyl and pull that album to listen too again.
@mrdrastic you would have to be more precise with your observation cause d&b in itself is supposed to be repetitive, as most dance music is. I think that this album was ahead of its time.
A full sounding track means it's well produced, unlike those "mixable" tracks that are missing something and seem to be done in two hours for party people who have no clue about music production.
Great tune and such a good memories from this 1. Really good vibes and groove. Good tune to listen for a change to this modern DnB overdrived reese bass madness. I am forced to give 5 stars for an ol´ times sakes.
very true, space funk is what i think OPtical coined it. A very different groove from the dnb before it,with his techno glitch influences and tight punchy acoustic drums.Interestingly enough it is always Optical that is blamed/credited for the influx of big dirty distorted bass sounds, however when u listen back to them now you realise they were tame by todays standards.I would say it was more the copycat producers who jumped on his style afterwards, that misinterpreted 'dark' for 'noise'.

Man, just think how the simplicity of the drums can produce such a MAD beat. This IS music.
Just as 'MrWillsim' stated, the drums sound exactly like a live kit.

I agree that fog and that stuff, the earlier stuff was hot.
But def revisit Concussion. I only mention it, because it was one of the few albums that drew me into Drum N Bass in the first place.
Even back in those days, Concussion was a classic, just like Wormhole and Source Direct's Stuff.

worm hole is the bench mark in my opinion.
It has so much weight to its self,
yet it leaves enough room for a dj to mix and run other tracks over it!
These days it seems drum and bass is so full of (fat sounds) there is no room for mixing thus killing the art of the live set.
