  • Hi, like Bloody Mary's! The Brits claim that the 'Bloody Mary' was named after Henry VIII's daughter, Queen Mary (Elizabeth I's half-sister) who in her attempts to return England to Catholicism chopped off a lot of heads. She is known affectionately here as Bloody mary...:)

  • @RemiEsther In fact, the drink was named by the Wannamaker heiress in the early 20th century. She was a friend of Ted Healy, and they were big drinkers, often with big hangovers, so she'd ask for this and her name WAS Mary. Of course, the historical reference came to mind . . . These were virgin Mary's, if I recall. They really only offered champagne for booze, but I went into the kitchen and bummed a shot of whiskey, they were kind of shocked, ha ha!

  • @slobomotion ..would have liked to be a fly on the wall when you were downing the Whiskey! Bet they're still talking about it, lol! "Well, there was this American girl & you never guess what she did.....?" Well however the Bloody Mary is named after, it's a bloody good drink, eh??

  • @RemiEsther It was a mere small shot of Scotch and I prefer bourbon, but I asked nicely and I tell you I was all eyes in that kitchen! They had the fresh fruit in a basket, same as in any French home, they are cheap here, that is dessert, you share a piece with three or four people, ha ha!

  • @slobomotion ...lol! Pass that slice of pear please...!

  • @RemiEsther Can you believe I was mingling with this hoi polloi? I cannot!

  • @slobomotion .."oh, yah! Yah, dahling!....haw! haw! haw! Where did you park the horse, what! haw! haw! haw! "

  • @RemiEsther One of the women was upset that she had 800 euros stolen from her while at the buffet breakfast, but I was floored. All that cash on you? I usually only carry like a ten eurocent piece for a beggar or a charity box, you know? I actually did have my VISA card disappear at this hotel but it was easy to call in and cancel. Can you believe I was in with this crowd? They were mostly really nice, actually, but my horse, oh, you mean my bike? The tires are flat, ha ha ha!

  • @slobomotion ..800 euros!! You know when people are walking round with that kind of cash, they are seriously not in the real world!!! I hardly carry any cash at all actually..it's just easier with a card & everywhere accepts them, so....Now a horse would never have flat tires dahling, just have to get your man to change it's shoes now & then, lol! Oh & bung it a bale of hay...!

  • @RemiEsther I know, it was all I could do not to spit out my virgin mary across the table in shock! It is a bloody miracle if I am out with more than a 20 eurocents piece on me for a beggar, y'know? We keep small eurocoins up in the apt in a tray & I go looking every other day for like 3 euros as my pocket change FOR A DIRECT PURCHASE, ha! I'd be in serious trouble were I to be mugged, I often don't even have on my wedding band to placate 'em! This was a fascinating milieu.

  • @slobomotion ...they're lucky they didn't get the Virgin/Bloody Mary all over them after a remark like that!!!! Wonder what they were planning to do with the cash....? Dinner at the Ritz...?

  • @RemiEsther The money I saw flung around this week was astonishing. The Paris group meets monthly at Carr's and the head pays for everyone's drinks, some stay on to dinner at their own expense. I went twice and no one blinked the second time when I ordered several tequilas, do you know how expensive they are here? Again, I found the group really, really nice and a bit straight, but what do you want, they are civil engineers. At least they can converse!

  • @slobomotion Hi! Yeh, groan, tequilas very expensive here too, although it's years since I've had one! I remember having several (!!!) in Beverly Hills. I'd never tasted them before and was shown how to lick the salt and bite the lime, lol! I guzzled down glass after glass thinking how delicious they were, while everyone quietly watched & waited!!! I do not remember what happened after that, lol!!!! I was aware though, that wine glasses were moved discreetly away from me at dinner tables!!!

  • @RemiEsther The really good tequila I had in Mexico is the mild, cheap local stuff. It's very hard to get. They have a tequila bar in the capital of Iceland, run by a guy from Angola! On Cape Cod in 2000, my spouse and I discovered "the oyster shot," which is a raw oyster in tequila with lime. You better only have one or two, ha ha! If you ever get a chance to try a "Long Island Iced Tea," hire a babysitter and don't drink more than one! It is all the clear alcohols!

  • @slobomotion ..Oyster shot you say? Sounds like some sort of medication, lol!! Well I suppose it is in a way...Sounds deadly! Think I'll try the Long Island Iced Tea, had heard the name before although didn't know what it was...definately not tea then eh, hahahhaa!!!!!

  • @RemiEsther At a hot night out at Maxwell's in Hoboken, New Jersey, probably to see the Fleshtones, I innocently asked for an iced tea at the bar. It took me about five minutes to realize it was making me drunk. The bartender explained it was a Long Island Iced Tea. They cost a lot but you only need one drink for the whole night. There are some vids up about this. Yeah, oyster shots were divine, egad. Vodka possible but tequila the "best" way to have them.
