The meaning of the ad was rooted in Barry Goldwater's personality combined with the high stakes of the Cold War. Goldwater was rather hawkish, and the implication of the ad was that if Goldwater were elected, he'd start a nuclear war with the Soviet Union, thus resulting is massive needless deaths.
