I've only been playing starcarft for a few weeks, but I think he put it there so that he could block off his main economy from ground attack. With a hatchery and sunken temple down in front of that ramp, it would be impossible to get through if the attacker tried an early zealot rush, as you could clog up the rest of the ramp entrance with a few drones or a zerglings.
