It's because all the cruse ships today are all maned by 3rd world country crew, except for the officers. It's called flags of convenience because their regesterd in some ass hole country like liberia, liberia today has I believe the worlds largest merchant marine fleet. Give me an American built and an American crew ocean liner, their is none today.
Such a shame, it almost brings me to tears. I mean to me, this ship is as much a piece of americana as the statue of liberty. I'm glad she's been saved.
Beautiful and FAST ship! She could lap today's "passenger ships"... in reverse! Gibbs put those massive funnels on to keep her from breaking the sound barrier for sure!
I was researching quite a bit on this ship. It holds a very dear place in my father's heart as he sailed on it when he was a young boy. I read somewhere that the ship was inspected and found to be in sound condition and could run if fueled. I think whatever amount of money it takes, it is definitely worth saving. The govn't needs to realize that they spend millions on so much unnecessary crap... for once they should put their money to good use. History must be preserved, not scrapped!
@starcraftflyer17 Ok, you want to know why its not sailing? It hasn't sailed since 1963.The SS United States is about 60 to 70 years old. She sailed for the United States Lines, her sister ship is the SS America, which is now the SS American Star, which is wrecked, and now fully sunken.
The SS United States must be restored, all her classic furniture back in her. And let her sail for another 30 years! The SS United States is the last true Ocean Liner that needs to be saved. She only sailed for like 17 years. She must re-sail!
She would look completely different if she would be rebuilt as a profitable cruise ship for today. The entire superstructure would need to come off and be replaced w/balcony cabins. Had she been rebuilt in the 1980s as planned, her original profile more or less could have been spared BUT today's passengers want balcony cabins. In the 1980s, ssUS career probably would have mirrored that of ss Norway. 10-15 years of profitable operation only to be scrapped when age and mechanical problems set in.
@grantgalea she will NEVER be a cruise ship! she was built as a TRUE atlantic going ocean LINER. never as a cruise ship. there is a very distinct differance.
@wrather The 5.8 million buys her for now and gives the conservancy 20 months to make it into a self-sufficient landmark. If they can't do that, she goes to the scrappers. The first hurdle is to get the EPA to approve her conversion by Feb. 2011.
@wrather It's very important that people understand that the SSUS has NOT been saved. She has a 20 month stay of execution. The 5.8 million is only going to keep her from going to the scrappers during that time. This is not the time to relax. Now more than ever the Conservancy needs everyone's support!
@shipgeek : O I knew it was too good to be true. I don't get it why don't they just tow it to China or India where it could be restored for a sane price?
I don't think we should let our MarketPlace mentality drive every aspect of our society, sometimes it's necessary to spend a lot of money to save something--and as great US liners go, there isn't any competition. Still, compared to the Queen Mary, the US is no palace afloat--and the QM isn't the going concern everyone had hoped. If we are able to save the SSUS, we should learn from the QM and not make the mistake of sacrificing the public spaces--try to keep as much intact as possible.
if she will be scrapped, it will be a terrible loss. I don't understand why the government doesn't seem to care about their nation's greatest historical icon!
I have been doing everything I humanly and financially can in my own limited way to spread the word and support of our great Lady in Waiting. Please everyone rally together and make your voices heard! Save our maritime heritage. Restore W.F. Gibb's dream! SAVE THE BIG U!
if i was rich and had the money id save it. donate it to the conservancy for free and give money to assist in its restoration. all id want in return is a reasonable private cabin on the ship as a home. :) too bad though i have a feeling alot of people dont care and that it will end up in the scrap yard or worse broken and rotting away on a sandbar like ss america aka ss australis aka ss american star and like what will probably happen to ss independence.

@TheBlueRiband1 The SS United States made it's maiden voyage in 1952 and was taken out of service in 1969, not in 1963.

@locke11216 i know she was built as a liner. Then she should be restored back to an Atlantic crossing liner. She would be competition for the QM2 !

If I ever get rich..Lotto...Invent something big...Lady SS.United States will sail again.
I'm not kidding!
But with the huge amount of money it will take and then giving to Charities and so on...I'll be broke again in no time!
[I'd be VERY happy though!!]
