@MetalicaFan2007 I've heard tons and tons of their shitty songs, luckily everyone around me realized they were shitty and grew out of liking them around the age of 12 though, so I haven't had to go through the pain of listening to them for quite some time. Yes, it was a great movie. maybe try watching it on your own time so you don't have to write a report. I am only 13, but i would have done exactly what alice did. I also watched the movie in school, but still became addicted to it! =D
youve got to be kidding in sure women would have fought but they werent allowed! we were stereotyped as weak housewives who had to rock the baby serve the dinner serve society. we were always serving, serving, serving. women demanded the right to vote for a reason. go look up the whole movie iron jawed angels and watch what the women went through. if that doesnt have an effect on your warped perception of this then you have problems.
I don't see why you have responded to my comment with that statement.
The point I made - that public opinion is not a good enough reason to deny people equal rights - stands. Many men, if not most, were against women getting the vote. Even many women were also against it. That's what I was saying.
Of course there were many women who wanted to fight for the right to vote and et cetera but couldn't because of fear and et cetera, but that doesn't take away from what I said
That is not what you said. you basically told me that public opinion was enough to deny women the vote!go back and read your comment. better yet i quote
"And homophobes today think public opinion is a good enough reason to deny equal rights to gay people.
If we had left it to public opinion women would still not have the vote."
I am only 13, but i swear to god i would have done exactly what the suffragettes did.
Not to be sexist, but the reason men got so mad is because we fought for our freedom, the right to vote, etc. and women asked for it like it was candy...
@Epikcs It's not like women could have even fought for their right to vote anyway. Women were not allowed to serve in war. "Our place" was to aid the soldiers. If we could, we would have fought right along side the men. Women weren't asking, they were demanding the equality they were being denied.
youve got to be kidding in sure women would have fought but they werent allowed! we were stereotyped as weak housewives who had to rock the baby serve the dinner serve society. we were always serving, serving, serving. women demanded the right to vote for a reason. go look up the whole movie iron jawed angels and watch what the women went through. if that doesnt have an effect on your perception of this then you have problems.
my class today at school watched this movie. very well done im still kinda confused who is the women on the horse i know she is important but who exactly is she again?
@pencil977 the woman on the horse is Inez Milholland (played by Julia Ormond), an international activist, war correspondent, and labor lawyer. She became a symbol for the National Women's Party (NWP) as "the woman on the horse" leading the disenfranchised women to liberty and equality. She also campaigned in Europe for peace talks shortly before WWI (obviously it was unsuccessful). She was a powerful speaker and traveled the country speaking for the Suffragist Movement.
My high school Women's Studies teacher had us watch this movie today...the bell rang before it ended but half the class ((including me)) stayed until he kicked us out. I only had to go one room over for my next class but I was almost late anyway. Needless to say that we liked the movie, right?
@immaluvmachine there are actually 48 stars. By 1912 (when this parade took place) all the lower 48 states had joined the Union. It's easy to tell a 48-star flag apart from a 50. A 48 flag has 8 columns and 6 stars in each column; whereas the 50 flag has 11 columns, but 5 stars in the first and only 4 stars in the second, then 5 and 4 again, and so on, giving it a diagonal appearance. As you can tell here (between 1:30 and 1:34), the columns have an equal amount of stars.
What is this? Just an insult to the feminists/? It is sad to see that the same kind of misogynistic speech is still used to tried to silence women as when the suffragists worked for the vote.
Amazing movie, amazing scene. The sad thing about it is that all of this is absolutely true. HBO didn't have to use the magic of Hollywood to make the suffrage movement more exciting. These brave women carried their banners through rain and sleet and snow; and men, honest respected members of society and lowlifes alike, heckled them and beat them and dragged them through the streets while the police watched- before arresting the women.
This movie is so cool! I admire the women who made it possible for us to have rights today by doing stuff like this. It's so cool to see the banners as they would have been in the 1900's, because you normally see them in black and white.
wow, until i watched this movie, i didnt even know america had a suffragette movement too! we watched this clip in history once, but the music in the background was "cant hold us down" instead
Saw this movie the other day. Heard the cometary and was important to know. Know that the facts are kinda mixed and not exact in some places. The headlines on all the news papers were real from the time. There was so many dangerous riots on the suffragetts. Also the presidents wife dies soon at this time. Really interesting to read about. I luv how they mix their parade version of Lauryn Hill's song with the actual song, I thought that was very interesting and cool. It was an amazing movie this should have been in the movie theaters.
omg i LOVE the music in here. My history teacher is letting us watch this which gets me out of 3 days of homework. i loved this scene. This is actually a video that schools can show and kids wont get bored!
i saw this last year in my ap us history class, i love this movie, and i love the music it has. but this scene is like..woah...i remember my classmates and i were going crazy at the fact that the policeman just walked away, we couldnt believe it all XD...i just wish they release the soundtrack for this movie XDD
Actually, I kinda agree with gracem713. I think what she meant is that, either being pro-choice or pro-life, we have fight to eliminate what drives a woman to make that choice insteid of settling for the legalization or ban. I don't think a woman is happy to have to make that choice, so let's fight more for eliminating those causes. Both sides need to stop fighting each other (to me they're both fanatics) and help both woman and babies, cause neither have the blame for inequality.
This video clip reminded me of the modern gay/lesbian rights movement. The gay community every year has parades and throughout the world there are both ridicule and violent opposition to their efforts. This movie is an inspiration to any modern day activist.

People you shouldn't've given gracem713 all those minuses, just expresseing opinion, although gracem you should learn to express yourself a little differently. Not all feminists agree on the same issues, and not all see abortion as an exploitation of women. I agree with koshersaltine, it's more to do with choice. I personally don't approve of abortion in general, but I don't think the government, especially one nurtured by a patriarchial society, should dictate what women do with their bodies.
All I can do thank all of them. It's important to point out that all of these feminists were pro-life. I don't know why now when you say you are a feminist they think you are for abortion. Like Alice Paul said herself: "Abortion is the ultimate explotaition of woman." We deserve better.
Don't be as fanatic as religious people. Put yourself in their beliefs: life begin at conception. For them, it's a baby so, would you agree someone killing a kid? I'm in the middle of both points of views, but both need to free their minds and put themselves in the other's shoes. That's the only way we can tolerate.
just because you agree with someone on a lot of things doesnt mean you agree with them on everything. To do that is patently ridiculous, and while she didn't support abortion she was for women to have the right to choose what to do with their own bodies, to agree with the rstriction of womens choice over what to do with their own bodies is anti-feminist.
Actually not true. Several of the early feminists defied the law by opening their own abortion clinics to help the poor who we not allowed BC and couldn't feed the children they had already. This is a very old argument.
I'm a major in history @ WSU, and early feminists didn't open abortion clinics. Maybe you say that because you believe feminism started in the 1900, but it started in 1800. Without the medical advances, do you think they would have perform abortions safely? Actually, if you research Susan Anthony and earlier feminists, specially the one that published a newspaper back then, you'll se their statements were more pro-life that today pro-lifers. It's kind of ironic but it's true.
I was surprised to see your response. I actually have a book of original documents (copies, granted) that do mention here and there the need for either the improvement of the social norms or the introduction of publicly allowed means of dealing with the unwanted and supportable (i.e. not enough food) pregnancies. I won't say that any major members of the movement agreed with the idea, but others did. I'll look for the book on line.(I was a history major too. Almost went to WSU. Neat!:))
But Birth control, I.E. the pill and the like was commonly wanted, Alice Paul I think it was fought for that, though all my books on the subject are at my parents house while I'm at school.
Last note, promise. I was about to sign out when I remembered a diary of a midwife from the 1750's I read. She performed abortions on a regular basis, though she never described how. I would argue then, that certain technology for it did exist, though it was very likely rudimentary.
im watching this in social studies..............does anybody know which person is carrie chapman catt??????
