@OrdosWay: Yes, Rainbow Arts released the game in 1987, but had to withdraw it from the market because it was way too similar to SMB. However, the funny thing is that Nintendo has released Great Giana Sisters to the Nintendo DS!

To nitpick a little, the game was actually released by dtp entertainment AG, not by Nintendo.

However, Nintendo does have obviously forgiven Giana for imitating Mario, otherwise the game could not have been released on the DS.

It's true. I like Giana Sisters 1000x more than Super Mario, but the fact is, that Giana Sisters is a ripoff. Check the title screen that says: "The brothers are history". Also, the producer was sued by Nintendo and had to stop sale. Sad bud true.
