I read all your comments. I don't agree with the idea of the shape of our bodies or our hormones etc deciding who we are or what we are to do in life. To me the overriding principle is consciousness , sentience, living by instinct might be find for animals but our intelligence and sense of right and wrong makes it impossible to live by instinct, the intellect rules us or there wouldn't be a feminist movement in the first place.

All that means is that men's relationship to the world isn't the same as that of women and that's a great thing. Male and female Oedipus' complexes are very different for instance and this is a cornerstone to the individual's psychology. Now that doesn't mean that we can't choose the life we want to live because of our genders. That remains entirely up to the individual at the end of the day

Actually, I had just given a presentation in my neuroscience class on this one tribe in South or North India that is matrilineal and the neuropsychologists found that all the female's spatial abilities far out-performed the males.

Really, we will never be able to know if there is anything natural to gender. Because extremely young children are influenced early on by our gender roles. Baby girls and boys are treated differently as soon as they are born. Developmental psychology has found that 2 year olds already understand that pink is for girls and blue is for boys.

Think about it, as soon as we're born and our parents see what genitalia we have, we are fit into a certain gender role and treated in a specific way, prevented from doing things that are not within our gender role, and etc. We can still recognize that we are biologically female or male or intersex, but beyond that, we're human with a wide variety of traits and characteristics. We would have more freedom I think.

I'm more under the impression that it's more a search for acceptance for alternative sexual lifestyles such as homosexuals, transgenders et al. No matter what you do, men and women have a different physiology, different bodies and different thought patterns. Yes, it is more difficult for gays and trans and intersexed people, but much of it has to do with those traditional gender roles. I'm not talking about men and women's bodies, just the gender aspects. Psychology research has shown that men and women's thought patterns aren't actually all that different, contrary to popular myths. There is more similarity than difference because we are all human.

She often tells me that now some of his friends back in his country also want to move to Europe so they can find themselves a suitable, decent wife and not divorce just 6 months after the marraige. Also, she says that her boyfriend is a very kind, considerate and strangely manly guy, which is why she's still with him I guess.

To me the overriding principle is consciousness , sentience, living by instinct might be find for animals but our intelligence and sense of right and wrong makes it impossible to live by instinct, the intellect rules us or there wouldn't be a feminist movement in the first place.

All that means is that men's relationship to the world isn't the same as that of women and that's a great thing. Male and female Oedipus' complexes are very different for instance and this is a cornerstone to the individual's psychology. Now that doesn't mean that we can't choose the life we want to live because of our genders. That remains entirely up to the individual at the end of the day

Gender is socially constructed differently across different cultures. In Tahiti, gender is nonexistent and men and women and intersexuals are seen as being the same (besides the physical/biological sex). On the island of Vanatinai, women are aggressive and commit most of the violence while men are emotionally expressive and passive.

Actually, I had just given a presentation in my neuroscience class on this one tribe in South or North India that is matrilineal and the neuropsychologists found that all the female's spatial abilities far out-performed the males.

Really, we will never be able to know if there is anything natural to gender. Because extremely young children are influenced early on by our gender roles. Baby girls and boys are treated differently as soon as they are born. Developmental psychology has found that 2 year olds already understand that pink is for girls and blue is for boys.

Think about it, as soon as we're born and our parents see what genitalia we have, we are fit into a certain gender role and treated in a specific way, prevented from doing things that are not within our gender role, and etc. We can still recognize that we are biologically female or male or intersex, but beyond that, we're human with a wide variety of traits and characteristics. We would have more freedom I think.

I'm more under the impression that it's more a search for acceptance for alternative sexual lifestyles such as homosexuals, transgenders et al. Yes, it is more difficult for gays and trans and intersexed people, but much of it has to do with those traditional gender roles. I'm not talking about men and women's bodies, just the gender aspects. Psychology research has shown that men and women's thought patterns aren't actually all that different, contrary to popular myths. There is more similarity than difference because we are all human.
