Listen, stealing magical artifacts from strange creatures is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical arboraceous adventure.
dont ge t me wrong i LOVE the old games i just find it funny that the king dies and grahm throws on the crown and sits down, maybe to use the dead body as a foot rest??
3)yes rpg pre dates computer games, to pen & paper versions that included stats and character development. If you want to define rpg only by the terms of taking the role of another character that has to complete various objectives any platformer, shooter, sports game, fighting game or game period qualifies as an rpg. Now when put in context of a video game, a rpg contains some sort of 'improvment' system where by something, even just a weapon, 'lvls' up. Otherwise it's an adventure game
1) the only zelda that qualified as an rpg (instead of action/adventure like you see it classified in general) was the second for the nes. That had a lvling system. 2) no you don't "see" your char on screen in BT so you can't see them attack, but the difference between onscreen movement and movement through a 3d world first person style is insignificant. so yes if your going to nitpick about not being able to see your char attack theres no movement, otherwise there is.
Is there really so much confusion about what an RPG is? Really? As a member of a well-established adventure game creators' community, King's Quest (and all Sierra "Quest" games) are ADVENTURE GAMES, not RPGs. Period.
Actually not 100% true. There was one game they made called hero's quest (later changed names due to copywrite I believe to quest for glory) that did qualify as an rpg, had a status screen with stats and everything.
Incorrect on both accounts. 1) a rpg has a stat system levels etc. Kings quest has none of the qualifications of a RPG. It's a graphical Adventure game. 2) Bards tale WAS a RPG there is character movement, you create characters they have stats, etc. Try looking up the game before you describe it.
I thought I remembered a troll or gnome that was in the screen to the right that I could never get passed. He would steal all my stuff. Does anyone remember that? Why didnt you go over there?
If you annoy the gnome with the secret name, he gives you a key instead of beans. The key lets you into a cave system you can use to climb to cloudland. It's not as good as getting there on the beanstalk, because of the thieving dwarf. I don't recall how you annoyed him though; perhaps that was the consolation prize for not guessing his name?
Jajaja me acuerdo de jugar este juego cuando tenía 8 o 9 años, llegaba a la parte del gigante pero no sabía que hacer, si hubiera sabido que había que esconderse... jaja. gracias por subir esto :)
You should have seen the sega master system version. As soon as you walk into the throne room, the king slouches over and dies. No explanation. Just one dead guy and a new king. The game doesn't even tell you if he died or not, he just slouches over.
seems like a bit of a weird kingdom to run... bunch of leprechauns, giant, ogre, witch, and only like, only 2 people left in the Kingdom besides Graham since the king died (who are derelicts!)
Geez, Graham doesn't wait long, does he? Not so much as a minute after the King dies, and he puts on the crown and hops on the throne. The king's body's just lying there, but he goes for the throne first.
Thanks for showing the "correct" way to play the game to earn maximum points. When I played, I only knew about the alternate ways that got less points:
1. Throwing the dagger to kill the dragon.
2. Slinging the giant to kill him.
The ogre and dwarf are not seen in your walkthrough.
Oldgame is ooold :D I remember first time I played this at my uncles IBM PS/2 286 computer, and I tried to cross the bridges outside the castle by compensating for their arch and walked up to the bridge directly from the side... SPLASH, I went into the water and got eaten by the crocodiles :)
There are three ways of getting past the giant: magic shield, hiding behind the tree and killing him with the sling shot. You can get maximum points with the first two ways, but by killing the giant with the slingshot you can't get the maximum score.
@marneedear Yes, you can also use the ring. The giant can't see you and falls asleep. You take the chest. But when the magic fades, you beome visible again and you lose the ring and 3 points. I guess you were never meant to use a lot of items - dagger, ring, etc. - if you want maximum points.
Well done! I like how you one-upped the max score. I believe that in this version of the game, you can get the magic shield before the magic chest, and then just stand around when the giant approaches you because the shield will protect you.
159 points of 158? What?

It's not classified as an RPG -- it's a graphic adventure game. Ultima or Wizardry would be an example of an early RPG.

So the king dies infront of you and you just deside "I'm gonna be the king now!" over his dead body?
Work's for me. ^^

HAH! Back in 1983 how did ANYONE ever guess that if you sped the game up the giant would fall asleep?
So this is really only a 15 minute game ay? I never beat it.

It's only a game but rats don't like cheese.
Mice do but rats are lactose intolerant.

...Why did the king just drop dead?
DragonLS 4 years ago
Because his time was up.
HBourgoin 4 years ago
Yes, but HOW did he drop dead? Suddenly standing, and going like "Oh no! I'm too old! I fall to the ground!" seems a little weird.
DragonLS 4 years ago
It's because of the deleted scene, you actually drug him after he changes his mind about handing over the crown.
There's no way you go through all that trouble for nothing!

Wow 159? How'd you manage that? I remember I got a 204 out of 202 in Space Quest, still don't know how though.
