  • What a shame they (the media) wanted her to stay that little girl with the big voice. She turned into a beautiful young woman and was mis-managed. but she survived

  • Excellent rendition. Proves that Helen could have been a great R&B artist like Mary Wells.

  • Excellent. Helen was certainly up there with American R&B vocalists such as Mary Wells.

  • great song ))

(only I wish if higher recording level sound available ))

  • I can't believe this girl wasn't popular in the states....she's awesome

  • she had a world class voice... she should have chosen better songs overall.

  • dont be daaaaaafftt !!!!

  • ahh ok, sure she does.

  • Don't talk utter shit man for fucks sake

  • Its fantastic to see a clip I didn't know existed to accompany this song - worth a 45 year wait! Just one of THE best singers!

  • Thanks for the RARE Video of Helen!!! She really Belts Out this Classic Song.

  • Absolutely superb version of this song

  • great brit version with mucho soul

  • well said

  • Great...¡¡¡

What an intelligent comment! You wouldn't happen to be antisemitic would you? Just a guess...GROW UP. What a pathetic reaction to a music video. You either appreciate the music or you don't. Bringing racial prejudice into the picture shows you up for what you are, a sad inadequate individual who wastes his time and energy hating complete strangers because they were born into a different religion.

Just so you understand why I was so angry at what this imbecile said, I'll repeat it for you " I hate her, fucking yid [jew]"

Disgusting comment from a prejudiced low life...

  • There are truly some evil people around, saturated with prejudice and hate. The rest of us need to be careful not to absorb their spirit and become like them.

  • kelling123 I think this version is awful, but not because of the persons ethnicity or race. just a bad cover. a performance is subject to anyone's critique, but the other stuff has nothing to do with the music.

  • "Awful" version? Your comment makes me wonder which 'version' you think isn't. Apart from the amazing Shapiro voice, the punchy brassy arrangement here is more powerful than every other I've heard. Much as I love the original, this Shapiro rendition, for me, surpasses even Smokey.

  • Awful because there is no soul to it, and this is soul music. To me her voice more suited for show tunes, pop, standards, etc.,

  • The advice of a mother to her daughter about playing the field doesn't take a great deal of 'soul' searching to interpret. "Soul music" is it? Great singers are beyond such limiting record-company imposed categorization. Shapiro's one of them.

  • Barbara Streisand one of the best singers ever. But her few attempts at soul singing were rather pathetic. Many r&b singers have covered country classics, Ray Charles "I can't stop Loving You", Dorothy Moore "Misty Blue", Candi Staton "Stand By Your Man, Joe Simon, "Chokin Kind. They did not do an exact cover and attempt to sing them as a country singer would. Paul Weller's cover of Sister Sledge's "I'm Thinking of you" was very different interpretation.

  • Anyone can cover a song indeed. And your theories are just that; your own theories (though I could summon a good argument against the 'goodness' of Streisand's bellowing!)

However, I still protest your "awful because there is no soul to it and this is soul music" comment. I say it's a great sounding version of a song written by someone put into the 'soul' music category by the marketing constraints of the period. You don't like it and I do but your reasons are too conservative to ignore.

  • Agreed. "Soul" is such a ridiculous name for a genre of music.

  • Naw. Her voice falls flat on the higher notes. Too much of a monotone.

  • @terrafirma91 This is sung with the same interpretion as Smokey Robinson. The difference, Helen is a woman with different timbre to her voice. The song itself can seem monotonous, good song though it is.

  • I am so surprised! This is such a good version - It really suits her voice. I like that 1960's organ as well.

  • She's good but search Marta Kubisova from Czech Rep. She is the best singer in teh world. See her version of Happiness.

  • Wow! An excellent version of an excellent song. I wish I was 40 years older!! Britain's best EVER and most underrated female artist.

  • My new love......the woman is incredible!

  • This almost sounds like the original version in the U.S. Amazing!

  • It was a shame that Helen's management couldn't look beyond the "teenage heartache" stuff she was given to record in the early days. This clip shows that she was really much better that that.

  • IMO I would have substituted a sax for that organ though!

  • She is great. And even more strange is that she is a Jewish girl from Britain who sings Black songs and then turns into a born again Christian. I love it.

  • She was BRILLIANT...such a rich voice.

  • I don't see that shadow in the profile. If the producers were concerned, she'd be wearing a high collared evening dress instead of displaying here long neck...hehe

  • David Archuleta sang this song in American Idol

  • Yea and he was great.

  • I can see she was really R&B, too bad she didn't grow her hair out and make it in America.

  • I always heard about her but never actually heard her sing, pretty darn good!

  • The way she sings it, it sounds like it was penned just for her voice. Glorious!!!

  • TYLS used to feature an Album slot-this was not a single for Helen

  • Hi! It was a single-one of Helen's last hits-I remember buying it. The other side was "He knows how to love me", which later became a Northern Soul Classic.

  • @thefamilycat It was released as a single on Columbia DB 7340,the flipside is He Knows How To Love Me

  • Another rare gem which I've never seen. I thought I'd seen almost everything Helen had done but there are quite a few have escaped me after all.

  • Thanks Wizard for that! Really appreciated.

  • Fantastic! wizard1963uk thanks so much for sharing this with us.She recorded this originally in '64 but this looks like late 60's. Where and when does this come from and , more importantly, have you more like this?

  • hi

sorry i dont have anymore this is just one in my collection

  • This looks like its from the TV pop show Thank Your Lucky Stars which ran from 1961-66? Crikey Helen could belt out those Motowns, an understated talent.
