The picture of the square formation looks pretty good to me, on a bit of an angle square but still looks good. That is true that they used that to protect the commanding officer but the archers were also sometimes placed inside the square for protection. The other time they used a formation like that is if they were hopelessly outnumbered and had to fight to the last man. This way every angle of attack was covered until the last legionary fell.

Not very realistic so. They is no record in history that inceniary pigs were ever used against elephants. Only few about pigs for that matter. Against elephants i recommend ballistas. They panic instantly when hit. Even armoured elephants. I play Total Realism mod.

For chariots they loosened their lines, so the enemy went in between their lines on a clear road, then they attacked them on the sides. a chariot was a very fast thing but it is hard to manoeuvre with it. They used the same tactic at Zama BC 202.

Ever heard of the Triple Line Formation? I've been trying to use it rome: total war but it seems a little complicated. Hastati were in the front, Principes were in the middle and the Triarii were in the last line.

yes, as you can read in the discription of every unit (rome total war). the hastati were the youngsters, when u became older and more experienced you became principele, and after a few years of service there you became triarii.

it is not that hard, take 5 hastati put them in a line 4 lines deep (i like it that way), then 5 pricipes put them in a line behinde the hastati (allso 4 lines deep), and then u take the 5 triarii and put them in a line, but this time u strege them so they fit the lengthe of the line of hastati and pricipes, but if u want is to be correct u have to put a line of spearthrowers in front of the hastati and take them off skirmish mode

Nice video but i don't think it gives anywhere near enough credit to the romans. Where are the formations for repelling chariots and cavalry charges where they use the pilums as a makeshift phalanx?

0:23 this is the formation what they used to repell cavalry. Behind this, there were more troops, ready to throw their pilums. But at that time the cavalry wasn't a very effective unit for charges, because the stirrup on the saddle wasn't invented until the Hun's bring it in. You couldn't sit properly on the back of your horse, so they were used to bug the enemy, or to chase, and very rarely to charge.

in that system each man would fight five minutes, then his centurion would blow a whistle and him who was in the front line would go to the end of the formation and be replaced by the man who was in second place ...
