I think this was phenomenal! I know now many so-called dramatic coloratura sopranos of late cannot do anything above a high C and this is evidently considered OK... So sorry - but when someone comes along like Meade who can throw out great high notes like this, I'm more than enthused. If you're not enthused, great! Please enjoy your stars..especially those that "croon" bel canto rather than actually singing it. Who are today's equivalent of Callas, Sutherland, Gencer, Zeani, Caballe'?
I think that the comments of nebeshiku are totally classless. No artist deserves to be so totally disrespected. I think that Meade actually sings the role more effectively than Netrebko because she has a bigger voice. Meade has already sung Norma. Still, in this era of DVD's and so much emphasis of physical appearance, Meade may experience a problem. She absolutely needs to get her weight under control. The days of morbidly obese opera singers is over.
I wouldn't hardly call this amazing as some one put it but okay. For one she has way too much vibrato for me she's probably queasy during performances from the vibrato shakes to her head. I hate the gaps and the slowness through out robbing Anna of it's wonderful belcanto phrasing and lines especially the preparation time so many sopranos take in the singing of this role before the high D it sounds like the singer is taking a rest.
I like this a lot. I am not a critic nor do I have any training as a musician but I do know what my ears like and they like Angela Meade. I enjoyed Netrebko in the role as well and love the recordings with Sills,Callas and Sutherland. I do not like comparing 1 soprano to another. It is like comparing 2 different kind of apples, they are both apples and wonderful just a different taste (that is if you like apples =). Anyway each soprano brings something different to the part and that is exciting.
I too will only lower myself this last time to your ignorance, and yet again, very poor grammar! This is intended to be a forum for intellectual discussion and to expose people to perhaps unfamiliar material. You obviously lack intelligence and maturity. If other people are offended by the senseless remarks of NEBESHIKU, please report this person as I have done.
NEBESHIKU...1) Please, for the love of god, learn the proper use of English grammar 2) Although extremely poorly written, your use of grammar is still nonetheless, VERY offensvie
3) You need to be careful of what words you choose! Words are powerful.
4) You need to realize that Angela Meade is actually quite amazing!
5) See #1 again
6) How unoriginal to attack her for her larger stature. Yes, she is a bigger girl. So what?
7) You obviously are a very insecure person with grammar issues!
@rachanne78 I will only lower myself to your level only this time, if you think Meade is amazing (you must be a whale lover or into Miss Piggy) then their is no need to argue this case.
This girl has it all... all the lard a whale has! Her voice may be big but it's just that a big blob with zero technique, no musicality, this fat had is a train wreck!
COREYISAWAKE, Ms. Meade is exhibiting some very fine singing here. I am not hearing the "sloppy ass" singing that you are referring to. I have been listening to several recordings of her, and have been completely blown away. As a young singer myself, I am inspired by Meade's discipline and musicianship. I am saddened to hear you make reference to her body type, in what I understood as to be negative. Some of the greats were "bigger", both men and women.
@rachanne78 continued... I would much rather hear beautiful singing any day, than see a "beautiful" body! Are you a singer coreyiswake? Don't be so quick to judge. I am pretty sure that Ms. Meade undestands the true meaning of Bel Canto singing. I hear it in her voice. I am so thrilled to see her singing at the Met. She is worthy of the space, as well as the praises she receives, which unfortunately is lot more than I can say for many singers that work in that house.
@rachanne78 only in the met would they dare this roles, they know that the brain dead audiance there will applaud to everything and anything. At La Scala she would be bood off the stage under a shower of rotten eggs and tomatoes. BOO! BOO! BOO! Caprina!
@NEBESHIKU You are absolutely right, at La Scala she would be lucky indeed to get away with rotten eggs and tomatoes only! This is just the most awful, horrible, hideous and dreadful singing I have ever heard from a supposedly serious Opera House. How on earth did anyone think that she is in any way adequate for this!!!! Had I paid money to go and hear her I would have demanded my money back!!
@rachanne78 Yes, I am a critic. And one does not need to perform at La Scala or the Met to criticise. One only needs to have sufficient musical knowledge (which I have plenty of) and ears to recognise sound. Just because she has a big voice and can sing high notes very loudly, it does not mean she can sing opera well. And by the way how often have you performed at La Scala or the Met. At least I have gone to La Scala many times (including to hear Callas sing Bolena in 1957) have you?
@Ariadne7710 Well, fair enough. We have a difference in opinion. I agree, that one does not sing opera well simply because they can sing loudly and sing high notes. I have not performed at La Scala or the Met yet, but that does not mean that I too do not have sufficient musical ears or knowledge. I have attended performances at the Met and watch as many live performances as possible. I guess I am just surprised that some people don't find Meade's voice thrilling.
Respond to this video... Continued...I am not very impressed with many singers of today. I think there is authenticity to Meade's voice and I guess I was surprised to hear a critic not agree. Some of my favorite Anna Bolena's are Beverly Sills, Callas, and Scotto. Who are your preferred Anna Bolena singers, past/present?
Once her technique is under control, she might consider learning the music as it was written.
That way, when she's feeling ill one day and goes out on stage and can't throw out a high E, people will be less inclined to realize that has absolutely no stage presence (irrespective of body type) or stylistic knowledge to speak of.
That she take on Norma and Bolena simply because her voice has the range & general flexibility is an INSULT to tradition and the hard work of many, many true artists.
The girl has it all! Gorgeous voice, outstanding technique and a flair for bel canto. It is sad that the end of Coppia Iniqua was a poor note . . . other than that she totally shines. And yes, you need good high notes for these roles.

Fabulous singing by Ms Meade. Brava! And congratulations too, for her winning the Beverly Sills Award.

Bravissima! Worthy indeed of the Beverly Sills Award!

Wow! An exciting new singer (to me anyway). Just read (1-30-12) that Angela won
the Beverly Sills award. Earlier she was awarded the Richard Tucker prize.
I used to usher for the Met. Have heard Sutherland, Peters, Swenson, Tebaldi, Rysanek.
Albanesa, Nilsson, and many other greats. I enjoy them all. Of course some are more
suited for certain roles and have different strengths and weaknesses. But still, to me,
they are all wonderful.
Tnx 4 posting.

Meade has a voice, but not a consistent or disciplined one.
Bel Canto isn't just pretty singing & acuti; it's placing every phrase on SUSTAINED breath and all the modulations (dynamic, tempo) follow suit.
The singer should be able to sing all dynamics for each note in their range.
Meade's singing is choppy, breathy, doesn't use Donizettian ornamentation & is simply sloppy ass singing.
The voice isn't larger or more facile than R.A Swenson's & even she, a true musician, eschewed this role.
