Actually, if he did not go soon they would be forced to spend the night at the airport since their legal flying limit would be up. He would not be fired.

he wasn't an idiot. there was a misunderstanding -- they were using non-standard phrases to communicate, and they mistakenly went first to the wrong exit, then believed he had clearance for take-off when in fact ATC was telling him to wait for takeoff clearance. there was radio interference from both planes trying to radio in at the same time.

the KLM pilot is the biggest idiot in aviation history. taking of without clearance with fog and on an airport which is not used to Jumbo's.... He knew the Runway was also used as Taxiway because he had just used it himself. That's the problem with older people. They always think they know best. If he had just listened to the ATC nothing would have happened.
