Wow. I'm suspicious. Wasn't the NSF involved in New Math and Reform Math? Both are dubious concoctions, and I emphasize CON. Please see "An Inconvenient Truth," the video by M. J. McDermott, if you haven't already. Most of elementary arithmetic could be taught with our coins and dollar bills. But note the cumbersome gimmicks shown in this video. ("Price's Easy Arithmetic for First Graders" is on hubpages.)
The one major problem I see in our schools is textbooks.... there are so many garbage textbooks out there that only dilute the educational process with ridiculous and irrelevant tangents and anecdotes.
There is a long term memory solution for dealing with algebra. This might be useful for people who have problems in math.
