Bought an aeropress from your store and love it! I'm also a regular customer for green beans.
I'm going to display my ignorance here, but I'd be interested to get from you why exactly what comes out of the aeropress is not espresso. It sure tastes like the espresso I've had when I've been to Italy. Furthermore, articles I'm looking at define espresso as a concentrated coffee beverage brewed by forcing a small amount of nearly boiling water under pressure through finely ground coffee beans.
Tom, I tried something today I think you'd be interested in trying. I made Turkish coffee (with an ibrik I bought for your store, using the instructions you sent with it), and then poured the whole mixture into my Aeropress! The result was a Turkish tasting coffee without the grounds. It was pretty cool!
@JosephandElissa Interesting ... I have never tried to use the aeropress as a filter like that. Makes we want to get out an Ibrik and try it right now - except its the weekend and I dont have one here at home. Boo...
@dasnumerator Meaning does the top of the Hario Slim grind right into the aeropress well? No it doesn't really. It's a better travel mill than the larger Hario though, because of size and weight.
I love my aeropress. it makes the smoothest, least bitter coffee i have ever had. but don't make your coffee according to this demo. follow the instructions that come with the maker. 1) 180 degree water is the recommended temperature. DO NOT boil the water; it makes the coffee more bitter and it will shrink the rubber plunger over time. 2) use the provided funnel to avoid spilling grounds or water. 3) use the provided stirrer to avoid accidentally lifting the edge of the paper filter.
how come all the videos i see on this thing show people pouring water all over their tables or counters, spilling coffee grounds and making a huge mess.... ugh. how hard is it to film and edit a good clean video for informational purposes?
@pugggs Because it actually DOES make a bit of a mess. It'd be non-factual if you edited that detail out. It's not a big deal -- quick wipe up takes care of it. But if you can't stand a little spill mess, this isn't the device for you.
If the extraction is "one-dimensional", try splitting it into two phases with boiling water to finish. Just add the bitterness/tang you require from the second steep, then top up to length.
@TheBeebopper I've noticed there's no reference to a pressure release in the plunger so a double infusion could only be done by removing the filter. I expect that's too messy considering your comments on "upside-down brewing".
Love mine. Use it almost daily. Doesn't make espresso...more like Aeropresso. I use a variation of the recent championship method (200ml of 176 F water, inverted, 20g of coffee, stirred for 8 sec., wait for 22 sec., press for 17 sec.)
Love the video. We use these to serve coffee in our festival coffee. We make it a little differently however a fine cup. Check out our press me designed for many coffee shot per day. Thanks again for all the videos.
@gserack yeah, the packaging is tired. the pointless testimonials from Karen in Apto, Ca and other people are funny but the product works well so i can't complain. someone needs to make custom shell art aeropresses.
the aeropress does use more coffee per ounce than other brewers - it basically makes a concentrate. I then add water to make the strength that want. There is now a fine mesh screen that you can buy instead of the paper - but I use it both with the paper disks and the screen. The screen is convenient for travelling.
@lauraleesmithagain (paper absorbing oils) was exactly what I had thought as well. Not addressed in this video. Perhaps with the filter being so small and the dose being high, there is less negative paper effect.
Hey about the expresso thing you really should come over to Iceland and teach them a lesson over here. I can't stand their use of expresso at the main cafes and roasters here.
@klarinetta heh - i think it's funny when people write expresso. You used to see it everywhere in the US and now everyone as corrected it to espresso. but some people serve something that isn't really deserving of being called espresso - i think they *should* call that expresso. gas stations should serve expresso beverages. -t
@klarinetta It's not a handsome brewer, but I can't agree with your comments about the cup. I brew with it on most weekends at home. I am using the new Coava Disk filter in it ( .008 size) which has some interesting results - more body for sure. Anyway, to each his-her own! Thanks for your comment... -Tom
What is the black gasket thing on top for using with the Skerton grinder? I saw in another video you were using some sort of pink/red duct tape configuration. The black looks better.
Great video! I've had an Aeropress for about 2 years now and I can't imagine what I'd do without it. Can't wait for your review of the new Sowden Soft Brew!
Thank you for this video demonstration - it inspired me to buy an AeroPress as well :-) I'm glad it also works upside down. There are some pro's recipes on the Aeropress Championship website which I have tried out. One can very so much, this device is just great. Enjoy great coffee (you surely do at Sweet Maria's!) :-)
I must admit, since making the video I have been trying the upside down method once again, But this time I have been doing it in the sink. No more bad spills...
I have actually been enjoying the upside down way, although you cannot add more water so you are almost always making a strong extract, that you will want to dilute with hot water afterwards
@sweetmarias I've found that doing the upside down then flipping and letting the sediment settle for a minute on the disk before i press allows for a much cleaner cup. What is your technique with the disk?
Nice Tom, I've been waiting for an Aeropress video. I've had my Aeropress for 2yrs and love it; it's the perfect coffee maker for work. Now I just need to sneak a Baratza grinder into the office.
great vid! -- had the aeropress a few weeks... i've been trying per the instructions, but got bitter results -- had my best results using this technique... sweet smooth Ethiopian Haile Selassie. Not sure... maybe was the umpa-lumpas ;) thanks!
Thanks for the comments. Yes, newer models are certified BPA free. Not sure that the old "milky plastic" ones had BPA, but the newer ones certainly do not. I like the Hario Skerton - it's inexpensive relatively and grinds easily EXCEPT it can be hard to hold/grip.

@sweetmarias How much more coffee does it require? Can't we just let coffee sit longer in the device if we want a stronger taste?

Doesn't the aeropress use like twice the amount of coffee than a press? Also I would think the paper filter would absorb much of the oils/flavor. No?

Am I the only one who think this device is only good for traveling and camping as it's portable and made out of plastic and that's it ?
For me the cup is so smooth and has so little acidity that all of the coffee's complexity is lost. It's like an cup in mono.
Doesn't matter if I use 205°F water or 175°F in both cases it's an cup in mono.

But geez, I didnt realise the changed plastic was due to BPA.
