i had a pet magpie too, not this kind, the UK kind, found in road when a juvenile. It would peck my head every morning to wake me up and get in bed with me, but when outside if other magpies came anywhere near it would hide behind me, or if was on my hand would grip my hand twice as strong. think its parents had tried to eat it or somet but it escaped.
@magnusalexa That is sad that it escaped. I think it is so cute how he used to peck your head :) Same with Moses, when the wild magpies came anywhere near him he would freak out and be so scared. It was because Moses was not a part of their group and appeared weak because he had no clan of magpies. That is probably the same with yours too.
I am so sorry to hear you lost Moses. We have two magpies that found their own way to us. They are now 5 & 7 months. Of course we took care of them & gave them what they needed in order to survive. They are now family members who give us much happiness. I am tired of all the misconceptions about Magpies. They are generally based on little evidence & lack of understanding. Mildew & Squawktina have even taught a few people we know that magpies are really not so bad.
@MissSamanthaaudrey Hi and thank you for your comment. I agree completely with you, everybody seems to be so scared of them, when truly they are one of the most beautiful birds one could have. You are so lucky to have two of them, they must be older now seeing you left this comment six months ago. I hope they are doing well and it is very very wonderful of you to be giving them such a great life!! You are blessed to have them in your life.
Wow. I loved this video soooo much. Thankyou. We have a pet magpie. She is only about 6 months old. We love her to bits. They are the best birds. Please check out my vid. "bird loves dog". Spread the word...Magpies are the greatest.
I had a Magpie we rescued. It had fell from it's nest on to the ground it was so young. We raised it till it was a good few months old and it was so friendly! I moved away not long after so I don't know what happened to the poor thing but we rescued loads of birds. Pigeons... Crowns.... Even Sparrows but the little magpie was the sweetest! :D I bet you can guess what we named it! ... How do you distinguish a male Magpie from a Female? x
@XPXdani That is so kind of you to have helped out so many birds! I am sure your lovely magpie is doing just great in the wild. You gave him a second chance at life :) What did you name your magpie? I am not exactly sure how to tell the sex of magpies, but I was told females have more white than males. x
@biancaebony Actually, females have less white. I think the subspecies is dorsalis, from Western Australia (unless you aren't from there, if not, he cannot sit still long enough for me to tell!). (Moses could be a she... I dunno)
@biancaebony Moses... I think you will find is a female rather than a male. The males have a 'white' back and the females a 'grey' back. We have found that the females have a more social personality. We have a pet female magpie we call her 'Aussie' and she has a wonderful personality.

Yes, though they have a different form of intelligence. Only mammals have a cerebral cortex, which gives them a great advantage in memory, perception, awareness, thought and communication. But blackbirds are extremely good problem solvers. They can count (up to 16, give or take an intelligent dog can count to 5, tops), make/use tools, trick tracker predators and take advantage of other animals. They are also, as you know, very social animals, which keeps their minds stimulated.
@BongaFish Problem is that it's biological.. Tiny colons so they can take the high nutrient stuff out of food and dump the rest to keep light. So maybe they need a nappy (diaper) or something
@BongaFish Right. Magpies, Dolphins,Great Apes (including Humans), and Elephants are the only animals in the world capable of passing "the mirror test".
That is where they are put in front of a mirror with a dot placed somewhere on them. If the animal recognizes itself by it's reflection, it will remove the dot.
This shows that the animal has individuality, and high intelligence, and most likely some form of imagination. These animals could be next in line to evolve human like intelligence.

I'm so sorry to hear you lost your darling Moses. It's sad I know but you gave him a wonderful, full and exciting life experience! Could you please tell me what you fed Moses in the early days when he had just fallen out of his nest? I have a magpie nesting across the road and she has lost her babies for two seasons now and on one occasion they ended up on my doorstep in such a bad condition that they were irretrievable and I eventually had to take them to the vet. Any suggestions?
@nunnayerbeeswax Don't take them to the vet! They can't afford to look after them so they euthanize them. Find a wildlife carer or rescue service. I recently got a rescued rainbow lorikeet from Kanyana Wildlife Rescue (Perth) & it has a broken wing and the vet was going to put it down! If you want to feed baby magpies, they will eat small pieces of minced meat. Mix it with a product called Wombaroo Insectivore mix from a pet shop. They eat insects in the wild so this makes up for it. Goodluck!
@CheesyProdo I am sorry to hear that about your bird. It is really sad. I think parent birds kick out certain babies because they know something is wrong with them. I guess it was not meant to be unfortunately
i thought cats eat birds lol look at moses hes like proper getting mouthy with the cat nd the cats like 'u wot diked' then moses like backs off a lil god im too stoned to even write this why i put magpie into youtube i dont know
I had a pet magpie when I was young - same deal - abandoned by his parents. They're a very smart bird and LOTS of fun, as you know. Mine would come inside, but he mostly stayed outside and would come when called. He also loved his tummy being tickled, as well as having mock sword fights (finger versus beak). One day he found a girlfriend and never came back - although I'm sure I heard him every now and then - he had a distinctive call. Great video, and thanks for posting.
@h3adsh0t69 I watched this video and it made me so happy, I commented. Then I noticed Moses recently died and I felt so sad. Very sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose a pet with so much character and personality. RIP Moses.
Moses is such a character- you are very kind to have rescued him- had he fell out of his nest? I was surprised to see him rolling about on his back playing- never seen a bird do that before! He was funny the way he was playing with the newspaper.
@forestdweller68 thankyou!!! yes he had fallen out of his nest, so we raised him :) haha yeh, he is hilarious we never saw anything like it before either. glad you enjoyed the video :)
Does Moses like shiny things? I heard they like to steal jewellery lol. I have some coming to my window sill for seeds and bread- they are not friends with a Mother Jackdaw though- she has a fledgling who she is very protective off bless her.
Wonderful footage, my family would often rear baby magpies that we found during spring, usually when their parents were killed on the roads or they fell from their nests. We NEVER removed any from a nest (good luck trying). Its amazing how tame they can be, we once had one who would tap on the window, and when I went outside she would fly up to my shoulder and nuzzle in under my chin, and make little chirping noises. Usually they would revert back to a semi-wild existence as they matured.
@techstyle123 thankyou :) yeh he was so cute back then. has changed so much. i keep forgetting to post another vid but will next week! make sure to check it out in a weeks time :)
yep, if they dont let it go theyll regret it later.....its better to let it go and be free than die and mourn for its loss.....who knows that magpie might have offsprings :) so let those rescued birds go after they heal ok?
Excuse me Baldoxxx4000 we have now had Moses for almost 4 years.
He is the happiest, healthiest animal alive. We simply cannot release him, he has no idea how to hunt for himself in the real world and he would not be accepted in to any magpie families, due to territorial reasons.
He loves his home, and dying is a part of life, so it must be accepted.
He would not be alive if it were not for us, he was found nearly dead at a pond, with his head bleeding, so he is a miracle.
Your policies against the pet trade have almost wiped out several bird species (e.g. Grey Cheeked parakeets in S. Am.). Stop trying to control others and master your own life.
I have a magpie called Pecky (my friends kids named her) she's so similar to Moses. I found her when she was very young. Now she's free to come and go and she did go for a few days but now she doesn't leave the backyard. I'd like her go off and do Magpie stuff but she's too tame now I think. She's awsome ;)
Birds usually dont like to play roll over, it makes them feel insecure and nervous. This is why they dont do this in nature. They only lie on their backs when they are dead.
But magpies are different, they have the largest brain among birds. They are acting like cats and dogs. They dont seem to mind lying on their backs.
I just got a magpie the same way you did. Poor little thing was kicked out of the nest. Raising it now. Seems to be going well, the little thing has made a huge recovery over the last few days.
I need some help but. What do you feed your magpie? I'm not sure, so i've just been giving it mince.
They are said to eat anything once they discern it is edible. LOL But that doesn't mean you should feed her anything of course. Try giving her normal stuff you would give a bird, or even human food (low in salt, fat, etc) that is healthy, and veggies & fruits/nuts/seeds. Don't feed her anything that will cause gas; birds cannot pass gas. LOL
Look for pet shops that stock Vetafarm or Wombaroo brand bird supplies. When young especially you should be giving it a proper hand rearing mix. In the instance of magpies I'd mix it with an insectivore mix and some average grade non-lean mince. Don't just feed it bread or weetbix like a lot of ignorant people do - it may survive but its like feeding a human baby nothing but french fries and thinking you've done a good job when it survives.
We have had Moses for 4 years, so we know what to feed him. We mix his mince with Wombaroo, and he eats everything from potatoes and pasta to apples and grapes. He gets everything he needs, plus we let him out outside for 2 hours each day where he feeds on insects in the backyard like worms and etc. And trust me, we know we are doing a good job, we are not idiots thanks.
@biancaebony Yeah they are a great little bird. I love mine. best thing I did was raise it. Don't listen to people who don't know. ps. thanks for your help with feeding advice from ages ago. was a great help.
Thanks for the reply. I'd love to see. You're right about them pooing everywhere! I have 3 of them lol. But 1 is free and pretty much only comes in to sleep. Just be sure to give him Insectivore mix in the mince now and then, so he doesn't have deficiencies or leg problems when he gets older.
insectivore mix hmm im going to have to tell mum to get him some! he runs around in the grass outside and eats slaters and different bugs but i will definitely tell mum to get some thanks :)
:o ooh... i decided to accually try to get a Falconry license so i can get a redtailed hawk :) but i still might get a magpie since I know were thousands of nests are ill search for them see if i can find any :)

Magpie's are protected and as such it's illegal to take them from the wild. There is a reason why you need a licence for some animals. Any person willing to take one from the wild does not deserve to own a pet in my opinion. Obviously they have no understanding of the animal if they are willing to catch one.
How do you know they don't have such a license? How do you know this is a wild-caught magpie? How do you know it's illegal where they live? How do you know this is an Australian Magpie (and not a perfectly legal European magpie or black magpie)?
And I find your conclusion fallacious too, just because someone is willing to break the law does not mean that they cannot care for an animal. Was it a rescue? If anything, your willingness to jump to so many conclusions only supports your ignorance.
Yes, it was a rescue. If it were not for us, Moses would be dead. We have had him for 4 years now and he is extremely happy and healthy!! I am sick of people judging and saying it is illegal. Get over yourselves, we gave a bird a new chance at life!! Thankyou KippTheKidd for being on my side!
@biancaebony I don't know why people are being like that, the magpie lived a happy life that he deserved and the owners did all they could do for him to have happy life.
heyrey007: No kidding! Though, they're pretty big birds, and I'd expect the same kind of mess from a parrot that size. Birds are pretty hard to "potty train."
I've actually heard of diapers or birds. I wonder how that'd work with a crow or magpie?
Aw now I want a real pet magpie. After seeing this I don't get why we haven't domesticated them and sold them in shops (maybe I just live in the wrong area).
Did you raise it from a chick or did it just warm up to you?
I have a pet magpie too, I found him/her yesterday, I named mine maggie nd if it is a boy it'll be a nickname for Magnus, how did yyou get it so playful, mine seems to like me alredy though, it ws by aa rod alone so my girlfriend and I saved it
i have a pet magpie too his name is nata. they make awesome pets they are so playful and sweet they are like a naughty little puppy trapped in a birds body. lol . the weird things he does always cracks me up !!!!!
i know a farmer who had a pet magpie, he was playing with it one day and it saw the light reflect off his eye and it pecked his eye out. Be careful they love shiny objects, we have magpies in our garden and they stole one of my earrings that fell out.
OMG! He must be so comfortable with you to lay on his back like that! That is a very trusting and playful position for any bird, especially for a predatory bird like a Magpie. How did you guys find each other? Was he a rescue?

don´t be so ruff to that bird!
but let me tell you something, before i do explode - humans especially you should start to respect the rules of mothers nature and not having a bird and a useless cat together in one room.guess that fucking cat killed the bird, or what is the reason for not uploading more maggie videos?
The bird and person are playing, if the bird didn't like it then it would fly away.
I'll have you know cats are quite smart, they know what they can kill and can't. You know a lot of the times the animals even form somekind of friendships among eachother.
Also, if you're pissed off by people with no respect then delete your youtube account or stop commenting. Your comment was VERY rude... and 'respect mother nature"? give me a break, calling a cat 'useless' on your behalf shows no respect.
DemonPaws - in german - Teuflische Pfoten, cat´s know what they can or what they are allowed to kill?i´m sorry, but stop praying to your cat/s!cat´s don´t know nothing!if they kill, than they do it because of their instinct and not because they are allowed by the owner noar to eat.
my family has been breeding cats for years, currently we transfered the bussiness to my aunt, she owns about 30 or so cats now.
Owning, breeding, caring for cats for years I know what I'm talking about. I succesfully kept cats and small animals such as mice as pets with no problems.
Cats are domesticated they are not like wild animals who are unable to be trained. However I'm not speaking for all cats, but most. My point is you have no idea to judge this person, even more in such a rude way.
Watch 0:53 and try not to laugh. XD

@biancaebony
Does Moses like shiny things? I heard they like to steal jewellery lol. I have some coming to my window sill for seeds and bread- they are not friends with a Mother Jackdaw though- she has a fledgling who she is very protective off bless her.
forestdweller68 1 year ago
@forestdweller68 Yeah, I think they like shiny stuff. According to my dad, next door had a pet magpie with a simlar past to Moses who stole nails.

Usually they would revert back to a semi-wild existence as they matured.

yep, if they dont let it go theyll regret it later.....its better to let it go and be free than die and mourn for its loss.....who knows that magpie might have offsprings :) so let those rescued birds go after they heal ok?
Baldoxxx4000 1 year ago
Excuse me Baldoxxx4000 we have now had Moses for almost 4 years.
He is the happiest, healthiest animal alive. We simply cannot release him, he has no idea how to hunt for himself in the real world and he would not be accepted in to any magpie families, due to territorial reasons.
He loves his home, and dying is a part of life, so it must be accepted.
He would not be alive if it were not for us, he was found nearly dead at a pond, with his head bleeding, so he is a miracle.
biancaebony 1 year ago 3
@Baldoxxx4000 Another know-it-all tree hugger. Feh!
Your policies against the pet trade have almost wiped out several bird species (e.g. Grey Cheeked parakeets in S. Am.). Stop trying to control others and master your own life.
Good on you, Bianca! And viva Moses!
You might like my bird vids, too.

TheLamelyNamed 2 years ago
Hi Biancaebony
I just got a magpie the same way you did. Poor little thing was kicked out of the nest. Raising it now. Seems to be going well, the little thing has made a huge recovery over the last few days.
I need some help but. What do you feed your magpie? I'm not sure, so i've just been giving it mince.
Tiggerplane 2 years ago
They are said to eat anything once they discern it is edible. LOL But that doesn't mean you should feed her anything of course. Try giving her normal stuff you would give a bird, or even human food (low in salt, fat, etc) that is healthy, and veggies & fruits/nuts/seeds. Don't feed her anything that will cause gas; birds cannot pass gas. LOL
tall32guy 2 years ago
Look for pet shops that stock Vetafarm or Wombaroo brand bird supplies. When young especially you should be giving it a proper hand rearing mix. In the instance of magpies I'd mix it with an insectivore mix and some average grade non-lean mince. Don't just feed it bread or weetbix like a lot of ignorant people do - it may survive but its like feeding a human baby nothing but french fries and thinking you've done a good job when it survives.
ferretallica 2 years ago
We have had Moses for 4 years, so we know what to feed him. We mix his mince with Wombaroo, and he eats everything from potatoes and pasta to apples and grapes. He gets everything he needs, plus we let him out outside for 2 hours each day where he feeds on insects in the backyard like worms and etc. And trust me, we know we are doing a good job, we are not idiots thanks.
biancaebony 1 year ago
@biancaebony Yeah they are a great little bird. I love mine. best thing I did was raise it. Don't listen to people who don't know. ps. thanks for your help with feeding advice from ages ago. was a great help.

he is fully mature, and is extremely large, has his full colours which are the bright white and dark black
he no longer has the speckles that babies have.
he is still gorgeous!!and yes he still SHITS everywhere haha :)
and no we didnt release him, he is our baby :)
i shall post a new video of him and show you all how big he is :) x

Thanks for the reply. I'd love to see. You're right about them pooing everywhere! I have 3 of them lol. But 1 is free and pretty much only comes in to sleep. Just be sure to give him Insectivore mix in the mince now and then, so he doesn't have deficiencies or leg problems when he gets older.
muppetspuppets 2 years ago
whattt you have three!! thats insane!!!
are they playful too?
insectivore mix hmm im going to have to tell mum to get him some! he runs around in the grass outside and eats slaters and different bugs but i will definitely tell mum to get some thanks :)

Magpie's are protected and as such it's illegal to take them from the wild. There is a reason why you need a licence for some animals. Any person willing to take one from the wild does not deserve to own a pet in my opinion. Obviously they have no understanding of the animal if they are willing to catch one.
Tatsu035 2 years ago
... like I'm stupid enough to take 1 from its nest...-.- i wouldn't take 1 unless it was hurt. -.-....
TehRuneSword 2 years ago 2
How do you know they don't have such a license? How do you know this is a wild-caught magpie? How do you know it's illegal where they live? How do you know this is an Australian Magpie (and not a perfectly legal European magpie or black magpie)?
And I find your conclusion fallacious too, just because someone is willing to break the law does not mean that they cannot care for an animal. Was it a rescue? If anything, your willingness to jump to so many conclusions only supports your ignorance.
KippTheKidd 1 year ago 11
To KippTheKidd
Yes, it was a rescue. If it were not for us, Moses would be dead. We have had him for 4 years now and he is extremely happy and healthy!! I am sick of people judging and saying it is illegal. Get over yourselves, we gave a bird a new chance at life!! Thankyou KippTheKidd for being on my side!

heyrey007: No kidding! Though, they're pretty big birds, and I'd expect the same kind of mess from a parrot that size. Birds are pretty hard to "potty train."
I've actually heard of diapers or birds. I wonder how that'd work with a crow or magpie?

okay well fristly the magpie has to be very very young. we got moses when he was only 1 week old!
if you get hold of one, you just have to spend every minute with him and let him sleep with you and let him sleep on your lap and etc.
also we hand fed him meat mince.
and you just have to constantly pat him and love him :)

don´t be so ruff to that bird!
but let me tell you something, before i do explode - humans especially you should start to respect the rules of mothers nature and not having a bird and a useless cat together in one room.guess that fucking cat killed the bird, or what is the reason for not uploading more maggie videos?
men, i´m pissed off by people without respect.!
Nudelsalatbomber 3 years ago
The bird and person are playing, if the bird didn't like it then it would fly away.
I'll have you know cats are quite smart, they know what they can kill and can't. You know a lot of the times the animals even form somekind of friendships among eachother.
Also, if you're pissed off by people with no respect then delete your youtube account or stop commenting. Your comment was VERY rude... and 'respect mother nature"? give me a break, calling a cat 'useless' on your behalf shows no respect.
DemonPaws 3 years ago
DemonPaws - in german - Teuflische Pfoten, cat´s know what they can or what they are allowed to kill?i´m sorry, but stop praying to your cat/s!cat´s don´t know nothing!if they kill, than they do it because of their instinct and not because they are allowed by the owner noar to eat.
Nudelsalatbomber 3 years ago
my family has been breeding cats for years, currently we transfered the bussiness to my aunt, she owns about 30 or so cats now.
