  • The little girl in the red dress is now in her 50's.

  • I read from some older post before about this song as to why there were children in the show. I don't know how true it was though it was humorous. Gary Lewis requested for some girls to serve as back up models for the show and so was the request granted, with little girls. Thus the grimace on his face at the start of the video. I think this is scripted though.

  • Great Upload..Thanks

  • Those little girls are the singers own children which frequently appeared on hullabaloo.

  • How they got this litle girl to stand there for 3 mintues is beyond me. Today, however, those guys singing to a little girl like that would probably be considered pedophiles in today's PC world. Back off Gary, you're inticing little girls into the horrid world of rock and roll! Ha!

  • Gary is more charming when he is not playing the drums.

He should do this more often.

  • Jerry Lewis spent a lot of money and called in a lot of favors trying to get Gary's career going. I always wondered what Gary would have sounded like "live" without electronic enhancements. All his recordings are obviously enhanced with echo-effects, multi-tracking, etc. This apparently live performance must have been lip-synched, otherwise Gary would have sounded different.

  • Gary Lewis is the son of Jerry Lewis and this song is a tribute to his Dad .. Jerry was always the clown ! ..good upload and lets not forget the wonderful work Jerry did for Muscular Dystrophy over the many years ! ..My Uncle also had his band on the Jerry Lewis Telethon many years ago .. I so wish I had that tape today !

  • @dturner5923 I know that Jerry was Gary's dad but I never heard that Everybody Loves A Clown was a tribute to Jerry. Where did you hear/read that? I would like to see some documentation. Thanks.

  • @John1948Five Hi there I guess this is the best documentation I can come up with ..hope this satisfies .. The movie The Family Jewels starring Jerry Lewis in which He played a clown ..era 1965 ... the same year this song came out ..coincidence ? perhaps but I think not ..

  • @dturner5923 Well, I guess we can call it circumstantial evidence. LOL

  • @dturner5923 Here is why I don't think Gary would have made a tribute to his dad:

    "Gary Lewis tells The Globe:

"Joe had problems his entire life and I blame our father. Jerry Lewis is a mean and evil person. He was never loving and caring toward me or my brothers."

"(My father) doesn't really care. He's more worried about his career and his image than his own family."

Comedy is not funny." ~ tabloidbaby[DOT]blogspot[DOT]com/2010/01/gary-lewis-blames-father-for-brothers.html

  • @John1948Five Jane Fonda also had a lot of problems with her Father ..but she still managed to do a backflip for him in the Movie on Golden Pond .. I guess it's just one of those things we will never know .. but hope that there was a little love there along the way .. I don't believe what the Tabloids write .. it can always be mis quoted .. there was no mis quote when Jane Fonda did her interview ..

  • This is probably mentioned earlier in the comments, but the bass player is the late Carl Radle who later played with Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, and then in Derek and the Dominos.

The guitarist, Tom Tripplehorn, is the father of actress Jeanne Tripplehorn.

Thanks for the answers on the little girl, I too wondered if she was in the Sound of Music. (And she was/)

  • I'm sure glad songs in those days were only 2 1/2 to 3 minutes long cause that poor little girl would have a crick in her neck forever!

  • These guys had nothing but good time music. Very popular during the mid 60's Right in the middle of the British Invasion. I remember when my big brother brought this album home. The cover shows Gary in a clown custom.

  • A frase only....beautiful remembers...

  • Those little girls must be at least 50 now. It was kinda creepy how Hullabaloo always had the dancers (like these girls) standing still as statues.

  • @lemurianchick I'll bet that those 'little girls' now 50 or so, still experience plenty of little child moments as I hope we all do. Our youth is still vibrant and inside and by just a stroke of the musical key can be reopened in all of its vivid tecnocolor. "Music makes the Memories."

  • When songs were of love and innocence. That little girl tells more than most videos will ever do. I love the innocience of the old tunes.

  • That little girl staring at Gary is ADORABLE!!!! Too cute!

  • @Rightsideup Direct from Central Casting!

  • This guy was great...then he just poofed!!!

  • @Greenhornet270 He got drafted.

  • I think the lead singer is the son of jerry lewis.

  • @havebold123 That's right. That's what got him the best songwriters and production people in the business. It oped the door and then his talent took it from there.

  • @havebold123 yes sir and a playback singer also....

  • Why do those kids looked drugged? I am going to have nightmares tonight!

  • Thess guys had a some catchy songs

  • @genericgeorge Jerry lewis made a movie about a clown in a concentration camp that he didnt finish i wonder if this song relats to that

  • I remember seeing this rerun on TV. At the end of the song, the little girls ask Gary for his autograph and he says, "Sure! I have one from my father too, would you like from from Jerry Lewis?" and she goes, "Is he anybody?" lol so cute!

  • great song, negative comments are like ammonia gas coming from the swamp, err farts, just ignore them.

  • One of the most played and popular songs that I remember from the 60's.....what great memories these are!

  • I always associated Leon Russell more with Joe Cocker, but to know he helped produce this band is, well, Far Out Man !!

  • wow great

  • I'm 20, and I love the Sixties! This is so good. <3 Dayum.

  • @juhjuhjane

We must keep the music of the 50's alive. Young folks like you are the key! If you like this, try my website. It's not published yet and it's a work in progress but it has some stuff on it you might like. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think! (You tube is ridiculous...) • the things he says are kind the things i did but at the end dreaming for a girl and not knowing when to start thats how i ended help girls

  • Catchy tune - more rock groups need accordion players.

  • @jcice3 - Just another form of a keyboard.... it worked!

  • One of the most under rated band of all time. Leon Russell was very instrumental in the writing of these wonderful songs. I often wonder where all the band members are of these great 60's bands? I guess they all went behind the boards in the studios across America.

  • @taypar11

Is that true? Wow, I thought I knew most music trivia.

    I believe it.

Leon was a genius in his own right.

  • Really cool sounds, They had a great producer, made their sound crist mallodic. However the coulnt produce it in person... anyone else notice that...But it didnt diminish their sound, or their hit potential

  • wonderfull mr gary lewis and playboys...nice music for our heads....i like songs of the gary....thanks brother

  • Could this song have been a tribute to his dad Jerry Lewis?

  • Wow who came up with that idea

  • Is the little girl staring at Gary, KYM KARATH who played Gretl in the Sound of Music?

  • @bobbyshermanfan Yes !,,,she is!!

  • @bobbyshermanfan It surely looks like Kym... As you may know [or not],she was also in one of the Brady Bunch episodes from the early 70s;,,, She has a big crush on Greg,, [who has no interest in her] ,without realizing how much Peter likes her..

  • is gary lewis jerry lewis son

  • @melfriend7 yes

  • @melfriend7 Sure is! I'll bet you're under 30! Ha! Ha! Cheers!

  • @melfriend7 Yes

  • At the time, I was living in the Roosevelt Gardens neighborhood in Norfolk VA and my older brothers were both in Southern California

There was another show like Hullaballoo called Shindig and, a little later, one called Where the Action Is.

  • @Fersomling Where The Action Is came on at 4:30 in the afternoon from the Baltimore station....lived in Gettysburg then....I'd make sure I was home for it....Paul Revere and the Raiders always on....

  • @centralparocker

Speaking of which, is was Gettysburg considered part of Pennsylvania Dutch Country when you were there?

Are there many Amish and/or Old Order Mennonite farms in the area?

I have a Pennsylvania Dutch connection.

  • Makes me think of old times and my mother passed in 2010 so it makes me kind of sad in a way and brings back the memories of her.

  • this song reminds me of me when i like a girl and i acted like a clown and she was always quite and i tried to make her laughf but it never workd :(

  • always liked this song ...... even though it might seem dippy to some ....... just has something about it that sounds good!

  • Gary Lewis and the Playboys were, and still are, a great group. This song is one of my favorites (I'm a clown). The two girls on the set were a nice touch for a such a good song. What I think Gary is trying to say that clowns, like everyone, have feelings.

  • when he sang this song he told his daddy he wanted girls to sing to and his dad didnt want any groupies after him and that is the reason for the young girls

  • i miss those days! even though i was only a pre-teen. listen to 60s pop all the time.

  • Is it just me, or does Gary Lewis look like Prince Charles in this video?? And what's with that accordian??

  • @meximando Hey now, that's my uncle on the cordovox, John West. He would rock out with his cock out...Gary made him play naked for audiences.

  • i love them. still listen to them. i miss entertainers being well-dressed and well-mannered. i dressed just like those little girls. thanks for the great memories. yeah, we actually looked like kids. <3

  • I dont get what are the Little girls there for just staring.

  • @MrTabby5000

Hullabaloo was a stupid TV show and they girl would always stare blankly ahead. Dumb show, Shindig was 10 times better.

  • @mitchflorida Has anyone ever told you that you are quite opinionated? LOL

  • i love this song it reminds me of me

  • One of the Greatest groups ever. Gary was drafted in the Army and didn't squawk about it,nor did his father Jerry,he took his hitch like a man,and could have avoided it!

  • who is this adorable little girl with the red dress?:}

  • great song. why cant they make music like this anymore? do we not have the tecnology or equipment to do it?

  • @archie977

    no talent

  • I love the vintage metal swing set and other play equipment, especially the merry go round. Reminds me of my 60's and 70's childhood.

  • Very nice song.

  • Somebody wake up the drummer and the kid on the swing.

  • I love this song! thanks for the additional info on Gary and the band!

  • LOL!! I love the story behind the little girls there. So funny and so typical of Jerry Lewis. I love this song, and all of GL&P songs. What a great era. Take me back.

  • isn't the little girl fixated on Gary just adorable? I hope they did that in one take or she may have wound up with a stiff neck ??????? And I might add..it's refreshing to see the comment (sierria) wrote at age 15....didn't think today's teenagers would even give this a listen...that's refreshing....you have good taste (sierria).....

  • Very cute..I just love the little kids looking on.

  • Thanks for uploading this beautiful music!!

  • THIS WAS AND IS A GREAT SONG AND YES... HIS DAD JERRY PULLED A GOOD ONE ON HIS SON...WOULD NOT EXPECT LESS FROM THIS FUNNY MAN.

  • kid ended up witha stiffed neck

  • @roborat91 ha ha ha ha! for sure !

  • yes, that is Kim karath at age 8, on Hullabaloo! She was the youngest actress in the film SOM!

  • That little girl is precious, looks like the youngest Von Trapp from "The Sound of Music".

    Larry

  • Is that Peyton Manning on bass?

  • OF COURSE AT MY 6 DECADES... I REMEBER WITH LOVE THAT SONG...

    THE OLDIES ARE JUST GREAT

  • My favorite. The beat is a killer. This was one of the best groups around but they didn't seem to get the recognition they really, really deserved. Could it have been because he was Jerry Lewis' son? Just a thought. :D

  • @9876543217303 he wrote theis for his dad for his birthday i think

  • @TheDeanmartinfan1 That's a good reason and it's a great song!

  • i wonder how old is that little girl now.

  • @mr94chevys10 Oh c'mon. Don't try to make something dirty out of something that was cute and sweet.

  • @John1948Five everyone today has that mentality is so sad really....

  • @John1948Five

MR94CHEVY YOUR A REAL NASTY JERK, WITH A FILTHY MIND. AND YOU SHOULDN'T USE THE''CHEVY''NAME EITHER I'M A CHEVY GIRL WHO DOESN'T LIKE YOUR COMMENT!!!!!!!

  • @mr94chevys10 You got a lot of negative votes, but I understand your point. I like the group and the song, but I always thought he was singing it to his girlfriend. I am not trying to be dirty and it is cute and sweet, but I also don't understand why they had him singing the song to a bunch of little girls. Back then there would usually be women with miniskirts and white go-go boots dancing to the song. But I am sure it wasn't his decision, but the show's producers. Jerry Lewis' son was cool.

  • RIP Carl. The best of the best.

  • Is that Peyton Manning of The Indianapolis Colts @ 0:38?????!!!! Remarkable resemblance!!!!!!

  • @GREATWHITE2 LOL...I was just thinking the same thing!!!

  • this is cute cause i dont think u would see little girls being so interested in being around rap stuff like today

  • How ddi they come up with the idea of him singing to this little girl?

  • OH YO GARY, YOU ARE DEFINATELY THAT GLEAM IN YOUR DADS EYE.

  • just silly, see the lil' girls starring on Gary.

  • Love it!

  • Had to get my dose of Gary Lewis and the Playboys today. I love the "feel good" songs! They don't seem to exist these days.

  • I was three years old at the time of this show .It's funny, the kids do not seem to be bratty like the kids today. Maybe thats because the parents did not spoil the hell out of them back in the day. Jus ta thought.

  • I love this song! And cute kids.

  • Boy, don't the kids just look thrilled to be there?

  • Hello, this a excerpt from "HULLABALOO". Transmitted by the NBC Network on September 20th, 1965. The host was Jerry Lewis. Gary was his co-host.

Other acts in this program: Joannie Sommers, Barry McGuire, Paul Revere and the Raiders. This episode is one of the programs who survived in color.

  • Gary Lewis performs at a little place in Plant City Fl. called Red Rose Inn once in a while.I got to meet him one evening. My claim to fame lol. He's about the favorite of all who've been there. One of my favorite songs.

  • what are the little kids there? and what is with that little girl staring up at the singer?

  • @hellotelephone1

    What?

  • @hellotelephone1 I believe that this was the episode that Jerry Lewis and Gary Lewis hosted together. Gary said that he would like to have pretty models there while he sang, like the other singers had, and the joke was that they gave him a little girl instead of the sexy older girls they usually had.

  • @TheLimePopsicle oh ok, then that makes sense. Thanks :)

  • @hellotelephone1 You're welcome!

  • @hellotelephone1 The appearance of the little girl staring at Gary and unmovable goes with the lyrics of the song: i.e. "everybody loves a clown so why can't you?" ...or "I can say a joke or two and you won't even care to laugh...". I believe it is very appropiate and insightfully done.

    Gaj

  • i love this my dad showed me thid he said when he was litle it was his favorite song

  • Wonderful song!! The group is nicly dressed and presentable. Why can't groups dress up to perform on stage instead of looking like they have slept in the same cloths for several days.

  • do you know the name of the TV show Gary appears on here and the original date/year it aired. thanks John

  • @beattleBob I don't but from Gary's website here is a list of all his TV appearances: Ed Sullivan, Shindig, Hullabaloo, EMMY Awards, Sally Jessy Raphael, Jerry Lewis Show, Tonight Show, Mike Douglas, Nashville Now and Wolfman Jack. Still searching for more info.

  • @John1948Five well this musta been when teh tune just came out so u can count out a lot of the shows in this list i would say ed sullivan cause shindig was all in black and white if i recall

  • @John1948Five I was going to post that this was Hallabaloo( I remember seeing this show w/the little girls on the set), not sure maybe mid-60s when I scrolled up and at the top it tells you when, where. Sweet!!!!!

  • @livinthe60s1 Yes, I put them up in the title when I know them. Often I have no idea.

  • @beattleBob I can't remember the show but I caught it just as gary's dad Jerry Lewis introduced him saying he even got some girls for him to sing to...in Jerry's infinite funniness you can see his joke on gary...if it wasn't the jerry lewis show then it was within the last several yrs before jerry's age took hold I could see this yr on his jerry for kids marathon may have been when I saw this piece unless it was a clip they did on the marathon from the far past.

  • @beattleBob This is from Hullabaloo. Its available on DVD.

  • Thank you for this. Gary Lewis & the Playboys were my favorite rock group. I liked their songs and I liked their sounds. I haven't heard their music in decades, but I like it no less now than I did then.

  • Thank you for posting this. Gary Lewis & the Playboys were my favorite group. I haven't heard their songs in decades. I find I still like them as much as I did all those years ago.

  • Thank you for posting this. Gary Lewis & the Playboys were my favorite group. I haven't heard their songs in decades. I find I still like them as much as I did all those years ago.

  • Those were the good old days!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Everybody loved him & his Daddy too!

  • I really liked Gary's songs when they came out. Later, when I lived in Azusa, CA, Gary was playing at The Oak Tree Lounge for months. He was playing drums at that time btw and singing. The group would do top 40, then once a set, Gary would break into one of his old songs. I loved those days too. Guy's lived with a lot of pressure I'm sure and I'm glad you posted this. tyvm. Cheers!

  • Great Song.

  • The Fonz once said about this song, "ayyy!", during an episode of Happy Days. He pointed to the radio Cunningham was listening to & then he did his thumbs up thing & said "ayyy!". The Fonz was an alright dude until he got brain damage after crashing into the chicken stand at Arnold's.

  • @jake83777 the Fonz did indeed suffer brain damage, and somehow turned to football coaching, where in 1998 or so he recruited Bobby Boucher and instantly turned his team into the Bourbon Bowl champs.

  • @pbrick6301 aaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy (thumbs up)

  • @11xzxzxz If you don't have any support for the accusations I wish you wouldn't post them here. I have never read anything about statutory rape charges although Gary's drug addiction was well documented.

  • @John1948Five Sure and I apologize. I deleted my comment. I seem to have "heard" that other rumor more than twice but I was wrong to post it though it was mostly to see if someone could verify or correct me... I could not find it on the web before I asked .. so I should have not mentioned it at all. Take care.

  • Delicioso sonido de guitarras para una fresca tarde de primavera o de verano. Hermoso estilo, gran época, juventud que se lleva el recuerdo de haber vivido arrullando sus sueños con tan bellas melodías.

  • Some of the cutest kids in this video. What artist today could honestly do this

  • This was my theme song for years. In 1966 eighth grade had a terrible crush on Theresa Hans. Course I was the class clown. Never thought she would give me a second glance. 1969 graduation day she came to me and asked why I had never asked her out. Never saw her again, went to every class reunion hoping. Still think about what could have been every time I hear this song. Perfect example of just how powerful music can be. drbogo321

  • @drbogo321 I know what you mean. We guys were afraid to ask girls out - rejection. The girls sat home all week end wishing someone had asked them out. High school was hard because we made it so.

  • @John1948Five sounds like your living in a dream world. So you ask her out then what? You go out for a while and she breaks your heart lol. Its one thing to fantasize how things would play out and reality is alot different most of the time. Dont mean to sound depressive maybe its just my life that sux lol.

  • @drbogo321

That's so sad! I love this song. I graduated in 1979. After the ceremonies i was setting in a bus waiting to go to Disneyland on grad night. Maria walks into the bus and looked right into my eye's. I didn't say to her if she wanted to sit next to me! I was in love with her and she never new it. I can relate to this awesome song!

  • @45alex del rio Know where you are coming from. Sometimes I can't listen to the entire song without thinking about the what could have beens. Music is a powerful medium. For Hotty 198, what's wrong with a bit of fantasy, escape? Better than downing a handful of Xanax wouldn't you think?

  • @drbogo321 So I'm not the only fool who's tripped over fear.

  • @saltjunkie77 Join the crowd. Maybe the song should have been, "Everybody loves a fool so why don't you? Everyone laughs at the foolish things I say and do. So why don't you? A fool has feelings too."

  • Great song.

  • Priceless!

  • At the end the little girl tugs on Gary's pant leg and says, "Can I have your autograph?"

Gary says yes and tells her she probably wants his father's as well.

    She replies "Is he anybody?"

  • You can't see it so good on this vid but the little girl on the swing knows the song and mouths the lyrics.

One of the cutest vids I've ever seen.

  • those were the good old days,

  • Which guy is Jean Tripplehorns father?

  • The guitar player who is standing. She grew up in Tulsa. The bass player also grew up in Tulsa.

  • @cyndibear5 You find it disturbing because of the differences in culture. The video, with the children, is a play on the words of the song. Trying to translate this is next to impossible. However, rest assured, no one is trying to seduce a child in the video.

  • Damn! It just dawned on me, those little girls are now probably about 50 years old (judging by their looks/age back in 1965).

It also just dawned on me that I will be 62 years old this year. Can hardly believe where the time as gone.

  • Sorry, I hit the thumbs down by mistake! I intended to hit thumbs up! I will do it again later! I can definitely identify with what you're saying!

  • Heh, I just turned 62.

Seems I laid down for a nap at 18 and woke up a few minutes later as an old guy.

But gawd, what a wonderful ride it's been.

I'd like to do it all again.

Even the parts that weren't so cool but that taught me how cool the other parts were.

Have you heard George Burns doing I Wish I was 18 again?

I feel that way sometimes but wouldn't take it because I would have to give up the wonderful things I have now.

    Being a Grandpa mostly.

Best thing I've ever done or been.

  • Yes, it has been a wonderful ride. We were born and grew up (post WWII) in the greatest time this country as seen or will ever see again.

When I was young I wanted to be older (so as to obtain all the rights and privileges, etc., of an adult). But for the last 10 years or so I've been trying to put on the brakes -- to no avail!

I'm sentimental and nostalgic, so I come here to youtube to view and listen to those thrilling days of yesteryear (i.e., records, old TV and movie clips, etc.).

  • Same here.

But when I was young I longed for the days when I would be older and the troubling passions would cool; but I discovered that the passions just take on a different and in many ways a more comfortable, subtle and satisfying form.

I now spend my media time with old movies, TV series and music that expressed things as we wanted them to be and in many cases were.

But then, every generation feels that way don't they?

And YouTube provides some of what we need.

    I am thankful for that.

  • I remember this; it was from an episode of "Hullabaloo" where Gary and Jerry co-hosted...

  • Yes; and his father Jerry promised Gary and the band that he would provide beautiful girls for the performance.

And Gary was so respectful and attentive toward the child.

    I found that very endearing.

That's when I started liking him.

  • haha look dat little girl shes staring...only

  • The kid on the swing looks bored.

  • Comment, thank you.

  • terrific song thanks

  • Hey (John1948Five) what do you mean he was? "He was the son of actor/comedian/director/producer Jerry Lewis," is Gary Lewis dead or did he have himself emancipated or disowned from his Father?

As a young girl I had all his music and thought he was actually quite cute. Thanks for the posts.

    Peace-out

  • I don't mean anything by it. In fact I didn't write it. If you look at the bottom of the bio it is credited to ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide LOL
